Vegans Aren't Misanthropes

This cookbook is completely awesome. Worth buying for the front sections alone: how to cook a bean, how to cook a grain, how to cook a vegetable, pantry stocking tips, etc. Try the chickpea cutlets, you won't regret it!

Best Ethiopian restaurant in DC?

I am visiting my friend in Fairfax next weekend and we wanna get some great Ethiopian food. I've heard good things about Dukem but I figured I'd see about any more recommendations. I'm vegan but I guess that won't matter much as I can get plenty of yummy veggies at most any Ethiopian place. But if there's one that caters to vegans that'd be nice to know, too!

Thanks in advance!

Vegetarian restaurants in DC?

Sunflower is excellent. I go to the one in Vienna every time I visit my friend in Fairfax.

There's another in Falls Church and we've eaten there too. Get the General Tso's Tofu, it's sooooo good.

Brunch In Norfolk, Va

My fiancee and I hit up Charlie's almost every week! It's a little divey diner with awesome food and service. Lots of options for vegetarians/vegans too.

Yikes, a vegan for dinner

Think of things that are vegan not by intent but by nature. You might not have to modify:
Pasta with pesto (just leave out the cheese when you make it)
Pasta with marinara sauce (garlic bread and a fresh salad on the side)
Meatless chili over polenta
Veggie stir fry (throw in tofu if you want)
Mexican theme: build your own burritos/tacos, do spanish rice & refried beans on the side
Indian: TONS of vegan food, chana masala is my favorite, you could do a dal, chutneys, yummy jasmine rice cooked with a cinnamon stick and make some naan bread
Mediterranean spread: hummus and baba ghanoush with fresh veggies and homemade pitas for dipping, side of tabouli
Vegan sushi (avocado, cucumber, carrot, whatever you want!) or vegan onigiri
Cheeseless pizza (use pesto instead of marinara - soooo good) or lasagna

Sub olive oil wherever you'd normally have butter. If you want that buttery flavor, get Earth Balance margarine. This stuff is soooo good, and when I was an omni I was all about the butter so trust me the flavor is right on. It's 100% vegan (no whey like most margarine) and non-hydrogenated.

Having a vegan for dinner is really not as scary as people think, ha.

What Christmas cookies are you baking this year?

So far I know I'm making ginger sparkle cookies, biscotti and chocolate-dipped pretzels with sprinkles & things. I also want to veganize the triplet cookie thing on the cover of Gourmet. It looks so pretty.

harder and harder to find good fresh garlic (and shallots)

I have gotten some REALLY crappy shallots lately. The garlic is okay however.

Any root veggie should work (carrots, sweet potatoes, parsnips, etc).

Pumpkin Cinnamon Rolls are really good. I got the recipe from a vegan cooking zine: http://donteatoffthesidewalk.com/

Whole Foods Inc. coming to Virginia Beach??!!

Meh, it would be okay but I have a feeling I wouldn't shop there much. I guess it depends why you want to see a Whole Foods here. If you're in search of novelty items or organic/free range meats/dairy then it would be cool. If you're just looking for simple, fresh ingredients, that's already available in the area. I do all my produce shopping at the farmers markets and Organic Food Depot on Granby St. and try to eat local as much as possible. I buy bulk whole grains and bulk spices at the Heritage Store. The Real Bread Shop in VB supplies fresh and awesome bread. The ethnic markets (Asian Market on Great Neck, Swaggat Indian Market in VB, etc) are great sources of hard to find stuff too. Whole Foods will surely have some options for vegan novelty items but I eat a whole-foods (the foods not the store) plant-based diet so some big superstore isn't going to really change what I buy.

Vegan Catering in southeast Virginia?

Thanks I'll talk to gourmet gang (I am familiar with the manager of the downtown one, I eat there about once a week) but they just started doing a weekly vegan special and don't offer that many vegetarian options. Maybe they can work something up though.

I'm getting married on 06/07/08 and I'm looking for a vegan/vegetarian caterer. The wedding food will be heavy hors d'oeuvres. Also need someone who can do vegan cupcakes/cakes. Any leads? I live in Norfolk.

LOST (tv show) party. Food ideas?

So I am having a LOST party for the first episode of the new season in a few weeks and I was hoping to make some LOST-themed food or drink. Anyone who watches the show have an idea of what I could serve? I was thinking maybe putting stuff in generic bags and boxes with the Dharma logo on it or something. Maybe a big jar of ranch dressing next to the veggie tray. And cut up fruit. And cookies shaped like fish biscuits. Any other good ideas?
