Italian BYOB ?

There are two very good reasonably priced Italian BYOB in the south west end. One would be Lucian on Verdun Ave., corner 1st Avenue (just outside Verdun metro), another would be laCampagnola, located on Dollard blvd. in Lasalle. I would make reservations for either one.

no fast food, entrees under 20$, downtown location?

I also forgot to mention, that we will be there on a weekend (fri.-Sun) so does this change things? Are all the following places still happenening on weekends, or does it turn into a family crowd?

no fast food, entrees under 20$, downtown location?

We are four ladies in our late 20's early 30's, on a budget looking to socialize meet people (young business men maybe?), have a great time and most importantly great food. We do not wish to travel too far ( unless it's in an area where we can also party afterwards) and will be staying at the Radisson near Boston common. Any suggestions?

anyone know of byob with a terrace??

Jardin de Panos is located on Duluth, is a BYOB and has one of the best terraces in the city !

Big Salad

They make a very good looking salad (I have never tried it) at Java U on Sherbrooke and, Alymer? It is a "chop crazy style", "make your own" with very fresh looking ingredients.

My # 1 vote however would be for a bistro called le Garage, located in Verdun. The salad is called "Le garage" and contains, salmon (I substitute for chicken)real bacon, pine nuts, cranberries..etc. The combination is fantastic !

Terraces; the good, the bad, the food, the drinks...

Terraces I enjoy are:

Jardin de Panos, average greek food, wonderful terrace.

Santropol, very good sandwiches, tea and milkshakes, great terrace.

Please point us in the right direction

Thank you everyone for your posts! Serindipity has officially been removed from my list. As for breakfast places, I love to try different bakerys, however one day we need a really good bacon and egg diner, any you know of in the area near where we are staying?

Please point us in the right direction

We are going to NYC early May for 3 days and have a few recs., however uncertain if they will be too touristy or quite fit the bill of what we are looking for.
We are in our late 20's, early 30's and are staying near Central Park South (58th and 7th I think) We need some good places for breakfast in the nearby area, as I'm not too fond of travelling much before my first coffee. We are open to travel almost anywhere for lunch and or dinner (keep in mind we are on foot, taxi or train) as long as there is something else to do or see in the area other than the restaurant we are eating at. We will need one high end/good quality restaurant, another mid-range restaurant, the best pizza place and a few "must trys". P.S. I can only stand lineups for food if it is REALLY worth it.

So far here have been my suggestions, please let me know what you think of them:

- Shake Shack, Burgers I guess?
- Katz deli, pastrimi, obviously.
- Pizza...John's?, Lombardi's?, Grimaldi's?...Please help me pick.
- The little Owl for dinner
- Fanelli's cafe, sandwich or salad
- Pommes Frites, for some late night fries
and
- Serindipity for dessert.

No recs so far for high end/good quality resto, any ideas?...Thx !

Shish Taouk

Hi BLM,

My favourite Shish Taouk (never been to Abu Alias, now I must try it) is found in a hidden underground of an office building near McGill, it is called Akli. and is located in the basement of 1000 Sherbrooke, downtown. They do not grill the sandwiches however, they serve a lunch rush so maybe thats why, and also I prefer the plate to the sandwich. They have the freshest ingredients I have ever tasted and the homemade salads are to die for. If you do check it out, let me know what you think.

Supper on Cote-des-Neiges?

I'm all about the Kam Shing, located in Cote Des Neiges plaza. There is not much to be said about the decor, but the food is scrun-diddily-dumptious. This review is quite accurate, save for the location (they moved into the mall from across the street about two years ago) http://www.montrealfood.com/restos/kamshing.html

The underground mall~best place for snack/lunch?

AKLI is the absolute BEST lebanese. There fresh dishes are fantastic and healthy, always fresh. The family running it are also some of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. Yes it is in the basement of 1000 ans 1002 Sherbrooke located between, Metcalf and Mansfield. Please don't tell too many people about it, I don't think I could handle it if the lines got any longer during rush hour. :)

Melanzane alla parmigiana

I am from the south west area of Montreal. There are two favs in my book:

In Verdun there is Cucina Linda: (no website) Located at the corner of Hickson and Wellington. Family owned, food is very good and very reasonably priced, however the only downside is that the patrons usually seem to be 85% 80+ in age, and that can make for a different sort of ambiance.

In Lasalle there is La Campagnola: http://www.lacampagnola.ca/ Very different atmosphere, loud and bustling. Also family owned. Usually one of the brothers will be sitting at a table talking with the diners. It is bring your own wine. I love the food.

Wraps and Sandwiches in Montreal

We must not forget to mention Santropol !! The most wonderful and interesting sandwiches I've ever had :) http://www.santropol.com/

Inexpensive Seafood and/or Italian in Montreal

Hi there,

I really enjoy a little Italian place located in Verdun right outside Verdun metro, 10 minute metro ride from downtown. The only thing they do is pasta, however with many choices on the menu you'll be sure to enjoy. The mains are between 8-12$, it is also BYOB:) I would suggest making a reservation, as on the weekends they are usually quite full. 514-807-1353

Lobster fest -TONIGHT

Yes, I agree the choices on either of the two streets are below average. However, the group we go out with ALWAYS insist on eating in this area...and I, in hopes of helping a little bit, post to see if I can find a gem in amongst the toursit traps. Thanks to both of you for the response.

Nobody?

Lobster fest -TONIGHT

Hi there,

Could somebody please help me out. We are a group (about 7-8 of us) on a low budget, that want to head to Prince Arther or Duluth for Lobster Fest tonight, only I don't eat LOBSTER :0

Could someone please recommend, A- a place that has a terrace or has a large seating area with high ceilings (so I don't smell the lobster) B- that is not too high end, as to fit in everyones budget, and last but not least C- which serves other good dishes than just just lobster. D- BYOB preferred.

Thank you sooo much. Otherwise I fear we will be walking the streets clueless for a long time, and end up eating somewhere we regret.

Cheap and Delicious

You MUST try Santropol http://www.santropol.com/ . It is a wonderful experience with a bueatiful garden terrace. The killer tomato sandwich and northern lights are some of the best and most interesting sandwiches I have EVER had. Please try this place, you won't regret it.

Mile End TONIGHT

Have you been to Meatmarket?

Portovino?

Has anyone ever been to portovino in Dorval/St. Laurent? Any comments, suggestions?

Thanks

Chowish neigbourhoods for living in Montreal?

Have you looked into Verdun? Formerly a very poor area with a bad name, and I stress FORMERLY. However, now very much on the uprise, as the proximity to downtown is great (15-25 minutes) depending on which end of Verdun you are in. Rent is very, very inexpensive and GREAT chowish gems at very reasonable prices. I would look into it if I we're you. P.S., the core area of Verdun (1st-6th avenue) as well as the D'leglise/Lanouette area is still a little schetchy...stay anywhere on the outskirts and you'll love it !

gourmet chinese?

Try Mr. Ma located in Place Ville Marie. It is Chinese/Szechwan. Fantastic food, friendly service, a little pricey however worth every penny.

HELP W. BYOB'S

Thanks everyone. As we we're walking and very cold, we unfourtunatley ended up at jardin de Panos, I wasan't impressed. I do thank you for all your imput, It became an interesting topic regarding our dinner conversation..lol

HELP W. BYOB'S

How cheap is really cheap for the wine?...because I know our group, if it's not byob most will end up just not drinking and it will change the whole scene...make sense?

HELP W. BYOB'S

Just to add...Les Deux Oliviers sounded perfect, then when we called to reserve the # was out of service !?! Does anybody know why?

HELP W. BYOB'S

O.k., please help me. We are a group of 6 and 4 of us want Italian, 2 of us don't but we're willing to go.... anywhere but Edwardos. (Lombardi's burnt down) 2 cannot stand ethnic food, so thats out. It's must be somewhere in the Plateau, cause we will be going dancing afterwards. Greek and french are o.k...but can't seem to find the right place. Oh yeah, the kicker of it all, our budget is about 10-15$ for the main course. L'Academie is OUT. Any helpers? lol....this is a hard one.

Need BYO recommendations near blvd St Laurent

You should head to Duluth....you will be right near the clubs and the whole street is full of BYOB's, however with a group of 15 I do suggest making a reservation. My favourite used to be Lombardi's (Italian fare) but I heard it burned down... (Side question: is this in fact true? And do we know if it will be re-built?) my other fav's are Jardin de Panos (Greek) or Edwardos (also Italian)...there are thai places on this street as well but can't comment as I've never been there.

Best moderately priced restos in Old Montreal?

Hi,

If you are here for more than one night, I would suggest a visit of "Le steak frites St. Paul" Old Montreal on St. Paul , corner St. Gabriel I think....it is not the culinary delight of the century, rather a great steak with great fries in a nice ambiance with a bring your own wine policy that will save you a ton of money at the end of the night if you are on a budget. Enjoy !

New to Montreal!

In the mall and across the street from the mall are one in the
same, they moved about a year or two ago to accomodate the
crouds of people lining up at the door. There is another one, however it is not on Cote Des Neiges. Try the one IN the mall.

Michelle

New to Montreal!

When you do, don't forget to go on a empty stomach and have lunch or dinner at Kam Shing. ;)
