Now, what to make for Chanukah?

I'm not sure where it originated, but my mom has been making it ever since I can remember! Of course, no one cooks as well as "mom" so I never really attempted the recipe, but I'll ask her and post it.

Now, what to make for Chanukah?

I've never made latkes ahead of time, but I've had left-overs; they didn't taste as good as fresh.

It really doesn't take a lot of time to make latkes if everything is all ready the next before.

My family's traditional meal is usually latkes with applesauce or sour cream; bread (obviously challah this year); cole slaw with finely-chopped broccoli; and a buckwheat pilaf with figs, berries, and some vegetables.

Is it ever okay to be moved in the middle of a meal?

Situation one is simply unbelievable. I would have ignored the waiter or pretended that I thought he was "waving" to someone else.

For the second situation, why did the family need a stroller? As stroller is for walking. The baby should have been seated in a high chair. An exception would be for a handicapped child, of course.

Personally, what I'd do in the second situation is move without saying a word and do it very slowly. And then, leave no tip.

What Would You Have Done?

Obviously, it wasn't the waiter's fault that the dish was not as described. However, he should have apologized and returned the dish with ample portions of the missing food.

No unique advice, but I certainly agree that no tip (except one penny or coin, perhaps, to voice your dissatisfaction) should be left and that you should write the corporation. They really need to know what their waiters are doing.

How many of us Chowhounds are fat? [Moved from General Topics]

I'm 5'9" and weigh 145, but my body fat is 19%. I have no idea why people think weight alone is a good indication of how healthy or how fit a person is. The woman who said she is 5'9" and used to weigh 110 is almost unbelievable unless she had an illness or is a pre-teen who hasn't yet developed an adult body. When I weighed 130, I was gaunt and looked unhealthy, and I have a small body frame; I'm 26.

do you eat American style or European style?

I eat European style, but unfortunately, many Americans are unfamiliar with it and occasionally give me rude looks, as if my manners are terrible! I'm not saying that my manners are impeccable, but I've eaten in haute cuisine restaurants in Europe on business and am quite familiar with the European method. It's just more comfortable to me.

College Student Looking for good date places in Iowa

Cafe Shi is small, but the food is definitely some of the best in Ames. I live in Minneapolis but have a sister who goes to Iowa State, so I've been to Cafe Shi about four times. This is a great place, not too big, fantastic food, and best of all, it won't cost you an arm and a leg.

CHOW's Intense Brownies

I really don't like the taste of coffee (or anything coffee-related) at all, but I'd like to try this recipe. Should I just omit the expresso, or is there something else I should substitute in its place?

I'm Vegetarian but I Eat Bacon

I agree completely with JoshK. Someone who eats any meat at all is definitely not vegetarian. If you have no qualms about bacon, then other meats should not be a problem, except for personal preference.

No offense, but people who prefer only "certain" types of meat make it very difficult for those of us who do not eat (all) meat for other reasons.
