Best Thai Place that delivers to Laurel Canyon

Been a while since I lived on that side, but you might try Sompun on Ventura Place in SC... Their number is 818-762-7861

what's the difference between Pavillions and Vons?

Per Wikipedia, Ralphs Grocery Company was founded in 1873 in downtown Los Angeles by George Albert Ralphs.

...Hence the no apostrophe.

Guacamole

In a pinch, I have purchased the ready-made guac at Costco. If you add spices, etc. it's passable. Sure, not as great as the real thing but when the selection of good avocados is slim and you're craving guac or need to use it as filler, it'll do. If you like your guac chunky, this will definitely not work for you.

As far as keeping guac fresh for the next day (on the rare occasions you do not eat all of it), I have had luck using plastic wrap. Press it directly on top of the guac, leaving absolutely no air pockets. Unless you miss a section, it will stay green until the next day.

Pinkberry - Farmers Market - Spring 2007

Per the awful advertising slideshow at the Grove's Pacific Theaters, I noticed one stating that Pinkberry will be opening at the Farmers Market sometime this spring.

Is this a case of "enough already" or "it's about time"...I shudder to think of just how bad the already bad parking situation will be...

Very good pizza. Great crust. Garlicky.

Ditto on Gelson's Tarragon Egg Salad. Not too much mayo, not too much tarragon and great on crackers.

At the very least, it's been closed for a month already.

Food/places you go when you're exhausted!

Anything in the prepped food aisle at Trader Joes.

The Thai place in the Kmart/Whole Foods shopping center at Third and Fairfax...gah, cannot remember name...argh....

The Scoop on Wild Noodles in Burbank. Any good?

While I've not been to the Burbank location, I have had the unfortunate experience of dining at the Wild Noodles in Tucson twice. Twice too many. The first time we thought, hey, good concept, ok food. That was for takeout. The second time, it was absolutely horrible. That was for dine-in. The food, including anything deemed by them as "spicy", was incredibly bland and tasteless. They seem to feel that bean spouts are noodles, hence the over-abundance of them in every freaking dish. We actually walked out mid-lunch.

Why doesn't LA have any good Greek restaurants??

If I am craving a decent gyro, I usually hit up Greek Kabob on Olympic near Bundy. Sure, it's only a lunch-type place but it does the trick. I do believe the people who own it are actual real Greeks.

Where to take an LA foodie in Sherman Oak or Encino?

I have always been disappointed in Pinot Bistro. In my very humble opinion, the Valley does have some very good restaurants, but not very "foodie" restaurants like AOC. It may have upped its game over the last year or so. Mezzomondo is very nice, great food and terrific service.

Ahhh. I loved going to Mezzomondo when I lived in SC. Great little place and terrific service.

Beverly Hills Business Dinner

I'd suggest Ago, purely on food and atmosphere...can't comment on the price though as I've luckily never had to pay there (business, people, business).

Mastros Steakhouse

I have dined at both and prefer Ruth's Chris over Mastros. I actually got RC's steak prep recipe off the internet and prepare it at home. The Mastros in BH was underwhelming, over-priced and was just the type of scene I like to avoid when dining.

Restaurants that deliver near Beverly & Fairfax/LaBrea

You didn't mention a price range, so I'll pony up Thai Patio at Third/Fairfax in the Kmart/Whole Foods mall. Very good Thai and fast friendly delivery. They do have very inexpensive lunch specials as well.

Reel Inn? -- Malibu

When I first moved out here in the early 90s, I used to love taking out of town guests there for the food, etc. Over the years, I have grown disenchanted with the quality of fish and with the prices. Not to mention the horrible bathroom. The last time I went was over two years ago and I have not been back since.

No Boil Lasagna Noodles or Fresh Pasta Sheets

I tried using no boil noodles (Barilla?) and was incredibly disappointed in the wooden texture and lack of taste. I will never use them again.

Milano Freezer

I stopped by soon after they opened and thought it was very good. I had the chocolate gelato, which was great and my sister had the frozen yogurt. She liked it better than Pinkberry as she thought it less sour. I cannot remember the exact price but it was not expensive. $10? Servings were good size. We arrived shortly after they closed early one night (they were doing some finish work) and they let us in, gave us time to order and were very gracious. I don't go out for gelato or yogurt very often but I will go back solely based on their service.

Gyro meat - mid-Wilshire area only please

As a kid in suburban Chicago, you could buy gyro meat at your local Jewel. While TJs on La Brea does carry tzatziki, they don't sell the meat. Does anyone know any grocery or specialty stores in the mid-Wilshire area ONLY that sell gyro meat?

Thank you.

Pinkberry dying?

My sister and I went to Milano Freezer tonight and thought it was great. It's on Olympic, just west of Doheny on the south side of the street. I had the chocolate gelato and my sister had their frozen yogurt, which she actually liked better than Pinkberry. She said it was less sour. We had a sample of the daily special, Peach Mango, which was very good but a bit too peachy for my taste (not a big fan of peaches). The gelato was very good and creamy. Two 8 oz. medium servings was about $8. Aside from the yogurt and the gelato, the service will definitely bring us back. Very friendly and helpful despite us getting there just past closing time.

Your choice for Trader Joe's BEST item

Cornbread pizza dough (but are they ever going to get it again?)
Pastry bites with feta cheese and carmelized onions.
Tenderloins - actually more like petit filets
I loved their gyozas but the supplier went bankrupt. Supposedly, they are looking for a new one...
Frozen chocolate chip cookie dough

I was disappointed to find yztziki (spelling?) sauce but no gyro meat at my store...Heck, I used to be able to get that in the 80s at my neighborhood Jewel in N. Illinois...

Why Trader Joe's?

After several horrible shopping situations at TJ's here in LA, I vowed to never go again. Is it the small aisles of LA bs that make everyone who shops there incredibly crabby? You'd think it'd be more fun. Well, then they got me with the gyozas (their supplier went bankrupt so they are searching for a new one), the gyoza sauce (which is excellent on grilled aspargus btw), the appetizers and, surprisingly enough, the grilled tenderloin, which is terrific. I don't know where they get this meat, but they are really more like petit filets. Hey, if I can cook steak in an oven and not ruin it, it has to be good. While I still dislike the attitude of the shoppers (people of La Brea, would it hurt to smile?), I still go there every week or so to stock up on goodies and treats.

Good Earth Restaurant --- if anyone cares.

I ate at the Studio City one years ago. I had possibly the worst meal ever there, as well as really crappy service (former waitress here), and have never been back. Aside from the bottom of my own crisper drawer, I have never actually seen lettuce that brown. I am amazed it's still open.

Das, if you don't mind, I'm going to steal that Olive Garden line and pretend it's mine.

The Great French Fry Debate

1. Big Joe's on Broadway (west of 26th a few blocks). Piping hot, cheap and just thick enough. (Cash only) McDonalds followed by In N Out - while I second the "well done" style as sometimes the regular way are not quite done, they are incredibly greasy.

2. The best skinny fries I ever had were actually sweet potato fries. If you see them on the menu anywhere, order them, but only the skinny kind. A great sweet/salty mix.

3. Steak fries? No.

4. Benitas on the SM Promenade.

While it doesn't exactly fit any category, the seasoned fries at 14 Below/Over Under on SM and 14th in SM are great. Be sure to get them with their buttermilk ranch dressing.

Busby's - Mid-Wilshire - open for lunch?

I just drove by Busby's on Wilshire last night and their sign reads that they are now open for lunch. Has anyone been yet? Are we actually getting a decent sports bar in the neighborhood?
