What's for Dinner? #118 [OLD]
Braised turkey thighs in orange juice and chicken stock with sweet potatoes and butternut squash. Even better than Thanksgiving!
Where to find mushy peas (food store, not restaurant)
They carry them at You Say Tomato in Nob Hill as well.

Restaurant nr. Booksmith in the Haight?
Kanzaman is a Palestinian restaurant about 2 blocks up on Haight that's very good. There's also Cha Cha Cha's and Citrus Club,

Top-5 Cooking Goals for 2009
I'd like to use my juicer, pressure cooker and ice cream makers more.
I want to bake more, I can cook well but have problems with pastry.
Cooking with squash?
I believe the flesh colored one is a Butternut Squash. As in most squash it's great roasted and also makes a wonderful soup.
Food that Most People Love and You Don't...
mushrooms. Here in California they are everywhere.
Sushi - meh, I like the dragon rolls which everyone tells me is not sushi. :)
Chocolate - again meh, I prefer caramel flavors
Cilantro/coconut milk - just can't eat either of these
Fish - Most of it's OK but won't go out of my way to eat. Love shellfish though
Shortbread cookies at the Farmer's Market
I believe the vendor table is La Cocina and the cookie maker is Clare's Squares.
Oaf needs mandoline for thin-sliced garlic only
I've heard good things about these gadgets! http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=13724768
Cocktail Menu help
I make stuffed mushrooms frequently. Take the stems off and chop them in a food processor with thyme and breadcrumbs. I also add a bit of either dry vermouth or white wine. Fry the stuffing mixture in a pan in butter (sometimes I add a little onion). Brush the caps with a little olive oil, stuff them with the mixture then pop them in an oven until the tops get brown. They are really good with martini's and manhattans for some reason.
Table Side Caesar Salad
Alfred's on Merchant does one or at least they used to. You might want to call and check.

Time to 'fess up: The Chow Booty Call
Totally agree on Viriginia's tamales. Either that or a burrito at Farolito's.
100 top items to eat in bay area!
I'd include tuna heart pasta at Incanto, the buffalo burgers at Bullshead Restaurant in West Portal, and the pork chop at NOPA.
Won't You Be My (Chef/Foodie) Neighbor?
I'd pick either Mario Batali or Nigella Lawson. I like both of their cooking styles and they also seem like they'd be fun to have a bottle of wine with and chat in the back yard.
Best steak in Buenos Aires?
I'll third the recommendation. The black sausage with dates and walnuts was amazing. By the way, servings of meat are really large here, you might want to split an order.
Fall apples
Apple donuts to buy or to make? I just ate lunch and now I'm hungry again after reading your reply.
Will check out Alemany. Thanks all for the suggestions!
Do any SF restaurants have a fixed price dinner that include wine?
Indigo is the only one that I know about that offers it regularly. Food is good, not fabulous, wines are pretty nice.

Fall apples
As much as I love apples (especially granny smith and roma), I'm looking for organic that is reasonably priced. A friend bought 4 smallish sized apples at Divisadero Farmer's Market for $4.00 and 5 half green / half red apples at ferry building for $4.85. So 4 smallish apples for $4.00 and $5 for $5.00. Anyone looked at Rainbow or Alameda Farmer's Market? I'd like to start making applesauce.
Mountain Ranch Organic
Well, was hoping for feedback but did buy a 1pound top round steak for $9 that I'll report on during the week. Just looked up a recipe in Molly Steven's "All About Braising", yum, will probably use that as a base.
Mountain Ranch Organic
Has anyone heard of this company before? They are selling organic beef, chicken, stock, fat and other products at the Farmer's Market on Divisadero and Grove today. I've tried googling the company and entering in their website off their packaging but can't find them. Just wondering if their products are tasty.
Bargain Bites 2008 - Now Without the South Bay!
Totally agree. Delessio, while tasty, is not considered a Bargain Bite in my world. Not Brenda's, Weird Fish or Little Star. I don't think of the prices at any of these resturants as outrageous, but they aren't a bargain bite either!
Favorite Dive Bar in SF..
Gold Cane and Murios in Upper Haight. The Knockout and Kilowatt in the Mission.

I'm really glad she mentioned Golden Produce and Terroir, both places are wonderful.
Cross Rib Roast and ?
Thank you so much. I ended up making a tomato, avocado, corn salad but I'm saving this for next weekend's BBQ, Sounds wonderful. Will try out your recommendations (last paragraph) and let you know.
Thanks again.

missing thread-"separate checks nightmare"
Weird, I saw that yesterday evening. You are referring to the one asking if the US should do the same as Europe (including tips in the meal price)?
Also, the separate checks one was running for a while, what's up with that? I thought it was an informative and entertaining thread.
La Trappe and Beretta: reports
Went to Beretta with a friend after work last week and we each ordered a pizza and had cocktails at the bar. For soaking up their wonderful cocktails the pizzas were great, as for taste, meh. Bartenders were super friendly and were very helpful when recommending a drink. Loved the Sazerac and the Diablos. I highly recommend going for appetizers and just sitting at the bar to watch them work their mojo.
Cross Rib Roast and ?
By the way, it's a lunch, that's why I'm hesitant to go too heavy though your ratatouille sounds great. Would you mind sharing your buttermilk cole slaw recipe or letting me know where you got the inspiration?
Cross Rib Roast and ?
Thank you so much for your suggestion. Do you think if I added in some fresh heirlooms at the last minute it would ruin the dish? I have your recipe marinating now, used red wine vinegar as that's what I had, and thought some tomatoes on top would be nice, but not sure if would be too acidic. Thanks again for the recipe, love cukes.
Cross Rib Roast and ?
Hi everyone,
I was hoping for brisket but apparently this time of year in SF is a hard time to find brisket cuts. I bought a 6.5 pound cross rib roast that I have already started marinating as Jim H. suggests...

I am also making potato kugel and a pluot/berry shortcake for desert. I'm looking for suggestion of sides(specifically veggies) that are seasonal. I know that we are still (at least from what I see at Farmer's Market's) in stone fruit season and tomato season. I think a panzanella would be a little much with the shortcake and I'm really looking for a veggie dish that would be light but complement the Cross Rib Roast.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance...
