May 2012 Cookbook of the Month: "Food of Spain" and "Moro: the Cookbook"
Just put the tapas book in my cart on amazon - looks great. Thanks so much BC.

(smacking forehead) Yes, yes, that business with remaking the cauliflower from Italian Easy - why oh why didn't I look at my spreadsheet?? Otherwise (rolling my eyes at myself) it is a really useful tool. And I'm glad to hear I'm not the only obsessive here.

I am working on a spreadsheet of favorite COTM recipes, also marking down those I still want to try (really ought to have a column for "eh"). I find it really useful because sometimes I forget about things I've absolutely loved and should be repeating.

Thank you so much for that info. I'm definitely going to look into this book, and into her Mediterranean one too.

blue room, I'm with you on the "from each according to her ability" business. There are some months when I just don't get that much cooking time, but if possible I still try to cook along, or cook to old COTM threads. And I have learned so much here.

Great and helpful post. Can you give me some idea of just how meaty (porky especially) Tapas Sensational Small Plates is? I've had great tapas in some parts of Spain and in other parts everything had pork, which I don't eat. I'd be on the book in an instant if it was even half pork/red meat-free.
Jim's Famous BBQ in Chapel Hill closed
laughed at your second paragraph.
It certainly seems like a great location, and plenty big enough for another restaurant.
April 2012 COTM: Melissa Clark Month, Cook This Now: Autumn
It's so odd - my first look through the book I found a list of things, not especially long, that I really wanted to make. But somehow I wasn't interested in the other things - very much not interested. At this point I've made most of my original list and had great luck with things that didn't interest me at first glance. And I've bought the other book! I'll definitely be cooking from these a lot in the future, and I think they'd make great housewarming or wedding gifts too.
Why do no national burger chains have veggie burgers?
So McD's just out and out lies. Wow.
Pizzeria coming to Carr Mill Mall in Carrboro
While I find vegan "cheese" to be unpleasant, my oldest girlfriend is a vegan and raves about it, and about being able to eat pizza. I'm guessing there are enough vegans in Carrboro to make it worth their while to at least try offering it.

Sounds really good - I've been wanting to try this and your review will push it toward the top of the list.
New Fuchsia Dunlop book
Another big thank you for giving us some idea of what is in the book.
New Fuchsia Dunlop book
I so very much wish I could do that! Unfortunately (well, at least regarding getting this book) the UK isn't our only stop, and we're figuring the type of clothing we'll need for the second stop will be somewhat different so we're already luggaging more than I'd like - I'm flying solo with Lulu, so between her and the luggage, I'll have my hands full. I'll see what I can do (I can already hear my husband huffing at me from across the Atlantic). Maybe I can mail a bunch back to myself? Erp. will see.

Tuscan Kale (Swiss Chard) with anchovies, garlic (and without the pecorino)
I had some leftover 4 cheese pasta (from Gourmet Yesterday) that I figured I'd serve Lulu and me for dinner, and figured it was the perfect time to experiment with a new side dish. We found nice looking Swiss Chard at the grocery store, so this came immediately to mind (she says it is a reasonable substitute for the kale). She also says the cheese is optional, and given the main I thought I'd drop it. Didn't matter at all - this was fantastic. I pretty much love anything with garlic and anchovies (and the garlic/ginger mix too) and this was no exception. Lulu also loved it. Now I really want to try the red pepper/garlic/cumin seed variation. For me, this book just keeps on giving.
New Fuchsia Dunlop book
Consider it done (assuming I can find 2). A reminder might be a good idea though. Wish I had big enough luggage to do it for everyone!

No! no, no, no!!! Please tell me it releases there before the 26th of June ....
Why do no national burger chains have veggie burgers?
As others have pointed out, Burger King has veggie burgers, and they're happy to put cheese on them for the non-vegans out there. I like them, and that is my go-to meal when we're on the road in the middle of nowhere. I'm really amused by the idea of asking for a Whopper, hold the beef.
Prepared meals for delivery in Chapel Hill, NC
This is a great tip - thanks. Do you know if they let you specify things like vegetarian or no pork?
City Kitchen (was Spice Street) in Chapel Hill?
Has anyone been since they changed the menu and name of the place? Any reports? I find myself with a night off (babysitter coming) and most places closed, either due to usual Monday hours or Memorial day. I want something nice and not far from home.
Can't miss eats of all kinds within 100 miles of the Chapel Hill/Durham area
I was at Lantern last week and made a meal of 3 appetizers - every single one of them amazing. Two were specials and one off the regular (but changing) menu. The one on the menu was the asparagus and shiitake spring roll (which replaced the duck roll - also fantastic); the other two were a salmon tartar with toasted mustard (or coriander?) seeds and 2 small crab cakes with panko. I'm going to try to get back there this week to do it again.

Thanks to both of you. Seems like the way to go to do the grapes in advance. I'll add it to my list.

I can't help but imagine the blue-ish tint with the chopped chives. It sounds delicious but a little scary to look at! Do you think you could roast the grapes earlier in the day, when you knew you'd be in the kitchen (like breakfast time or something) and use them later?
Tips for dining out with babies and toddlers, please
I waited tables too. For many, many years.
Tallula's in Chapel Hill
I have to say, my experience with the staff lately has been mostly very positive (and I agree about the Turkish woman - she's really great). Doesn't matter whether it is my husband and me, or my 6 year old daughter and me - we get treated politely and with welcoming arms (not always true when you have a child with you).
"Jamie's Meals in Minutes"
While Gourmet Today (a book I love) doesn't promise 30 minute meals, it does give timings that cheat a bit. For instance, instead of putting 1 onion in the list of ingredients, it will say 1 onion, chopped fine. You have enough already cut up ingredients in one recipe and the time it can take to make it can make a significant difference. Irritating, but with that book very much (for me) worth it.

I think the feta/mint/onion thing would work wonderfully (and really makes a little more sense). And a soft goat cheese would be delightful too, maybe with some basil instead of the mint?
And thinking about it, I don't see why one couldn't use this as a topping for pasta, although it might need some thinning out.

I've had my eye on that confit chicken, good to hear it was a hit. Amazing is very big praise.
