Prospect Street Cafe closing today

That's horrible! I had no idea. We LOVE that restaurant. They seemed to be busy whenever we were there. Did they close because of money or did Spencer want to do something else? Hopefully the latter. And I also hope Victoria lands somewhere wonderful too.

restaurants in Yakima Valley

We're staying in Grandview and are looking for nice restaurants for dinner in the area. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Wow! Thanks for the heads up. I had no idea.

Thanks for the input. I'm the only one of our group who loves Sushi.
Any thoughts from anyone on Minerva?

Oh this looks perfect, LotusRapper! Thank you so much. We subscribe to dance performances at the Vancouver Playhouse, so we usually eat dinner downtown. This is the perfect chance to explore another neighborhood. Thank you again for your help.

There will just be 4 of us. For this trip, we're not interested in Asian cuisines or "family" restaurants or chains. But other than that, we're pretty open: French, Italian, Latin, or just someplace with great salads and sandwiches.

Thanks for the suggestions. We're not interested in Asian food for this trip. Pied a Terre sounds great, but we found out it's not open for lunch on weekends.

Lunch near(ish) to the Oakridge Mall

We are driving up from Bellingham, WA with some friends for the Ikebana show at the auditorium at the Oakridge Mall. Could someone recommend a fun/interesting place for lunch on Saturday in the area? Like around the neighborhoods of Oakridge, Fairview, Shaughnessy?

Dinner on Granville Island

It looks great. What do you especially like to order there? And do we need reservations?

Dinner on Granville Island

We're going to see "The Real Thing" at the Granville Island Stage on Saturday afternoon. Any recommendations for dinner there after the show?

copper hog?

Oh dear, PLEASE DON'T! We went last night and it was pretty bad. Now, in all fairness, we all had the lamb chops which were seasoned to taste sour and vaguely Indian-ish. The green beans were not over-cooked (an unusual plus) but the ends with the stems were still on and needed to be spat out. Very few patrons, yet the noise was almost deafening: high ceiling and bouncy accoustics, I guess.
Also, now remember that this is predominantly a pub/bar, the very nice waitress totally forgot to bring our drinks until we reminded her when our food was finally brought.
Maybe this is more a place to drink (if they remember to bring them) and have bar snacks. But I'd pass on dinner.

copper hog?

Has anyone eaten at the Copper Hog in Bellingham? If so, how was it?

dim sum in Vancouver

Thanks Iona! This is good news. I had a feeling dim sum was more a brunch/lunch sort of thing, but didn't know anything about Shanghai traditions. I assume they don't do the rolling cart sort of thing. So are they just listed on the menu as appetizers or do you need to request them?

And thanks again. Anything that will start this visit from the in-laws off well is MUCH appreciated!

dim sum in Vancouver

What's the best place for dim sum in Vancouver on a weekday night? Does anyone serve it at night? In-laws are flying into YVR at 7 p.m. on a Tuesday and want great dim sum before we take them to our house in Bellingham, WA

Best sites for food photography

This is a great topic. Thank you both. I just came across this site:

It's facinating to see the choices people make when setting up a shot.

Best appetizers at the bar in WLA

Il Moro has a bar and it serves food?

Best appetizers at the bar in WLA

It's Friday and we want to sit at the bar (or in the bar area) and have apps and wine for dinner. We don't want "a scene." We're happy to go early (6 ish). And we don't want to battle traffic (we're in West L.A.). Any suggestions?
Thanks!

What book are you reading?

I know there are way too many mediocre food memoirs coming out these days, but Diana Abu-Jaber's "The Language of Baklava: A Memoir" is worth taking a look at. Her childhood and her family foods are inspired by and take place in upstate New York and Jordan. The first chapter provides a clue to the tone of the rest of the book. It's titled: "Raising an Arab Father in America."

specialty food sources for Bellingham area

Thank you ALL so much! Frankly, we're looking for a big change. We like cold and we're looking for space and quiet and a much slower pace. I'm an organic gardener who needs more land, so I'm looking forward to more of that sort of culture.
The Rhododendron Cafe sounds great, and we've been to Slough Foods and look forward to going to his tastings.
One of the attractions of Bellingham is its proximity to BC, so we're jazzed about that as well.
The ONLY drawback (and a small one at that) was how far Trader Joe's was going to be. So SusanC's news about one opening in Bellingham is a great surprise!
Most of all, whenever we've been up there, the people have been so friendly. That will be the best change of all.
Thank you for your help!

Well, sigh, shuffle, shuffle. Hmmmm.
OK, OK. I'm from Los Angeles. Please don't hate me!!! We don't own, we rent, so we aren't moving up North to drive up your real estate prices. We don't drive fancy cars. We only use our cell phones to call the Auto Club when we're stuck in the mud in a flood situation (true story). My husband is originally from Ohio. And my father was from Montreal and my mother's family farmed in North Dakota.

I'm just going on like this because a few weeks ago when we were up in Bellingham, a new friend advised us to LIE about where we're from, at least for the first year. And, after a day of looking at your posting, I just couldn't do it.

Thank you rcallner! This is very helpful.

We plan to be moving to the Bellingham area (somewhere in Whatcom county or even upper Skagit) in the Spring and would love some recommendations so we can keep our kitchen (and our pantry) supplied:

Best wine sources
Italian Delis (for prociutto, Reggiano Parmigiano, pancetta, etc.)
Middle Eastern food
Kitchen supplies
Cheese
Bakeries

Thanks!
