Historical lunch spot betw. Boston and Concord.
My mother is visiting from California, so we're going to Concord for the day to visit Walden Pond and various other historical sites. She mentioned wanting to have lunch someplace atmospheric -- an old inn with Revolutionary vibes, low ceilings, for instance. I would assume that most such places are tourist traps and have awful food. Does anyone have any recommendations that are the exception to the rule?
Frankie's 457 Lately?
Has anyone been to Frankie's lately? Most people seem to love the place, but the few bad reviews are SO bad that it makes me nervous. Trying to decide between there and Dressler. Want really good food, pretty room, not too loud or crowded.
Marlowe & Sons or another suggestion?
Thanks for the input! I think Marlow and Sons and Terroir are definitely off the list then, because nothing will be less fun than our shouting conversations and being jostled all night. I just don't want it to be that kind of evening. The menu at Henry's End looks really interesting and really varied (it's hard to believe they can do so many things really well), but the room is a little underwhelming. I'd like it to feel like a special occasion a little. I'm not so excited about the menu at Walter Foods, but I'm happy to know about that place.
I might just go back to my original idea of going to Dressler. People have talked about how expensive it is, but the menu looks amazing, the place looks beautiful, and we can make reservations. When you compare entrees, it's not really pricier than most other options out there, really. I think now I'm wavering between Dressler, Frankies 457 and Al di La.
Marlowe & Sons or another suggestion?
Oh, that's great. Didn't see desserts on the menu.
Price-wise I guess I expect most nice restaurants to have some entrees in the $20's, so I don't know for sure that Dressler is too expensive, but I guess some more affordable entree options might be good. These days I just feel uncomfortable asking friends to go to a place where all the options are expensive, I guess. Several comments on here made me feel like you could drop a pretty penny at Dressler. I also wanted to encourage a fun, relaxed, not too wannabe hip, unrushed time, and didn't know if Dressler's was more stiff/fancy.
I was also thinking of Terroir in Manhattan (I know, I'm jumping boroughs). Don't know if that'd get too crowded on a Friday evening, though. I went once pretty early on a weekday, so don't really know. I guess small plate menus seem more affordable on paper, but add up at the end...
Good to know that Marlowe and Sons is kind of cramped inside, though...
Marlowe & Sons or another suggestion?
Ummm...are there no desserts at Marlowe & Sons? That might be a deal breaker...
Marlowe & Sons or another suggestion?
I posted a question earlier, but didn't get many responses...Looking for a place for my birthday dinner with my husband and another couple. Made a reservation at Dressler, but now thinking that it's too expensive and fancy. I'm looking for a place where we can take our time, catch up, and have great food and wine. The food can be simple and I'm hoping to find a place that doesn't get so packed and "sceney" that we can't hold a conversation or we feel rushed. I'm starting to think that Marlowe & Sons would be a better fit...some sparkling wine, some oysters, pate, cheeses and meats and we could have a nice evening. Would it fit the bill, or does it get noisy and crowded there? Is there another place you'd recommend? Doesn't have to be in Williamsburg, but some where in Brooklyn or downtown F accessible would be ideal.
Birthday dinner Brooklyn, LES, or E. Village?
I'm looking for a place for a birthday dinner with my husband and a couple of friends. I'd like really good food, of course, but would also prefer a restaurant that's comfortable and not too slick, not too noisy for conversation, and that won't want to rush us out. A bonus would be if there's another cool place nearby for cocktails beforehand. Places I've been considering are Dressler (too fancy and stuffy?), Frankies 457, Marlowe and Sons (too casual and limited menu?), Prune, or Falai. Any other recommendations or thoughts about these?
CATERER FOR WEDDING IN NO
I'm planning my wedding in New Orleans and am currently looking at Southern Hospitality Catering. A couple people on here mention them favorably, but I wanted to check and see if more people knew them, have been to or hosted events catered by them recently, and have liked their work. We can't afford the fanciest caterers in town, so companies like Joel's are out of our league. Any feedback would be appreciated.
HELP! WEDDING LOCATION NEEDED!
Actually, my fiance IS Cajun, so he's educated me about the fact that New Orleans and New Orleans food is NOT Cajun. As far as our wedding food goes, I'm open to it being a combination of Cajun and Creole dishes...It doesn't have to be a "Cajun Themed Wedding" per se. We do want a Cajun band, and don't want fancy, generic wedding food with a carving station, big cake and such...so don't want a fancy banquet hall feel...but instead want something that feels more like a flavorful family feast. But I think we were hoping to stay in New Orleans more because it'd be easy for our guests, who would mostly be from out of town. We just thought it'd be more fun to be somewhere central where everyone can get home easily or go out after the wedding if they feel like it. I'm not married to it being in the French Quarter necessarily, and was interested in the Warehouse District as well (The Foundry looked great, but is WAY too expensive), but didn't want somewhere too out of the way. Thanks so much for all your guys' ideas and input! It helps a lot, and I've been investigating all your suggestions.
Muriel's recently?
That's really good to know. Those are the changes I'm talking about. When did the new chef start there? Thanks!
Rosy's Jazz Hall Good Food?
Ok, so I'm still trying to plan my wedding and reception in NO, and Rosy's Jazz Hall keeps coming up. Has anyone tasted the catering there? Obviously, I'll plan a trip there to taste things, but it'd help to be able to have a short list of possible places. Just wondering if people who like food have liked their food. Thanks!
Muriel's recently?
I'm exploring the option of having my wedding reception at Muriel's. I was wondering if anyone has eaten there regularly, either at the restaurant, or for a catered event there. I know restaurants go up and down, and I've read some mixed reviews about their food on here. Thanks!
HELP! WEDDING LOCATION NEEDED!
Thanks so much for responding, Whatisagrit. I was really interested in The Foundry, but when I started to correspond with them it seemed like they had a crazily high food and drink minumum that wasn't clear from their website...I'll have to double check on that to make sure.
Has anyone been to THE RED MAPLE RESTAURANT in Gretna recently? The banquet room and courtyard seem like they might work, but I've read mixed reviews of their food so far. Is it really out of the way?
HELP! WEDDING LOCATION NEEDED!
Do you guys have any suggestions of good, interesting places to have a wedding with 80-100 people? I'm in NY, and it's a little hard to find anything other than the expensive/most used options on the web. I'm looking for something a little more industrial/exposed brick and beam than wallpaper and velvet curtains. We're planning on having a Cajun band with dancing, so I'd like Cajun food, but I'd still like something with a little class. Really good food and good wine are a priority for me...but we are on a budget. It doesn't have to be in the French Quarter. Any ideas?
