CHINESE -HUNAN OR SICHUAN no Americanized Chinese... In New York and no good Chinese?

I would love to go to Flushing - hence my name - "have fork will travel" but my friends are more sedentary. Even in LA, I have a hard time dragging people to Monterey Park... Thanks for the advice.

Jitlada's amazing Southern Thai menu

Try it. You love it and Jazz or her brother will listen to what you like and guide you in the right direction. Gem of a restaurant and great people --- but the kitchen needs to keep up with the demand. Long waits now for dinner to arrive....

First Timers to NOLA rate my plans so far.

I just wanted to say thank you to you all you made our trip to NOLA a great time!

CHINESE -HUNAN OR SICHUAN no Americanized Chinese... In New York and no good Chinese?

Help! Former New Yorker arrived hoping to find a great reasonable, authentic restaurant preferably North of Chinatown in Manhattan. I cannot FORCE my friends to go downtown.... one In Brooklyn, one UES, one UWS so... please help out. - high school friends need a rendez-vous. I miss twice cooked pork, Sichuan crispy beef, Shanghai scallion pancake.. Please restore my confidence - that New York has not lost its Chinese heritage. All the posts bemoan there "local" so what gives? No Cantonese recs please as I live part of the year in LA.... and no Americanized Chinese - I was recommended and went to Phillipe last night and man what a shame... I miss the earthy taste of a hot pot.... I have spent decades in Asia but do not speak Mandarin or Cantonese... only some Vietnamese and Thai but need the real deal... In New York and no good Chinese?

First Timers to NOLA rate my plans so far.

Thanks for all the replies...
So which is best Brigsten's or Cochon?
Sounds like Commander's Palace for Brunch but if you can't get in which is best Elizabeth's or Luke ?
What do you recommend to have at August (yes we snagged a rez)
Po boys--- that's oyster po-boys Parkway Grill or Johnny's or ?????
Spotted Cat for late night jazz or????
A crazy honky tonk?
Best place for a cool pre-dinner cocktail by a mixologist (no canned juices please) and a relaxed vibe- perhaps a porch?
Finally a place next to Hilton "Garden Inn" near the Convention Center?
Beignet rhymes with cliché or MUST HAVE....
Best breakfast during the week for just a tasty down home meal just in case we wake up hungry....
Best gumbo - we like it spicy.
Finally where can three girls go hang out and chat that plays good music
Thanks in ADVANCE.

Where to picnic in Paris, if at all?

Some of the picnics I've seen are rather extravagant affairs with tables and even flower arrangements and on the grass. Go to rue Cler and then walk over to Avenue Breteuil - the esplanade is filled with picknickers as it is too narrow to play games. On that point avoid Invalides on weekends as it is filled with soccer matches. Also try the Tuilieries just west of the Louvre... Champs de Mars is packed with tourists and drunken teenagers...

PARIS-BEST VIETNAMESE RESTO?

I live part of the year in L.A. and in Paris. When recently visiting a top Chinese restaurant in Paris with my boyfriend, he asked the owner, who is Vietnamese, for a tip for a good Vietnamese restaurant in Paris. Her reply, "I can't recommend any good Vietnamese restaurants in Paris but I can tell you about a lot of great French ones!"

We tried Bamboo- why does it get such great reviews? Packed in like sardines and low quality. Tan Dinh is tired....
So can you all help?
A nice place like you would find in Hue or Hanoi where the food arrives accompanied by a platter piled high with fresh herbs.

Dressing in Paris [Moved from France board]

In Paris- dress to express who you are... I live demi-demi L.A./Paris. In L.A. I rarely think about what I wear in LA and it often shows. Here, you realize that if you do not think about it shows something about yourself - that you.... do not respect yourself/ have not had sex in a year and may never again/are bored with your life/depressed/or just are boring... or perhaps all of the above! Do not feel intimidated in having to dress luxe- but avoid boring.... think just gap -t-shirt, jeans - very plain.... it is the accessories that will show so pack lightly but bring lots of scarves, jewelry (necklace, bracelets, earrings) that work together. And leave the white sneakers at home. The French work very hard to be the best- food, ambiance.... it is not a weird look-- it is one of disbelief that you would walk out like that, frustration that they work so hard and you show up in something boring or ugly and will ruin their place. So go, and have fun playing "dress-up" like you did perhaps when you were a little girl..

Best Chinese restaurant in San Gabriel Valley?

GREEN VILLAGE CLOSED. Rang and the number had changed. Got a call back but the man did not speak English and hung up. Anyone know if it moved----again?

ISO the Best of Japan in LA/OC

Like being back in Japan! A small storefront- inside.... a cozy restaurant with charming staff but the food! ----- a trio of Sunomono - not your standard stuff but a variety of tastes and textures..... delicious quality sashimi, miso-marinated salmon.... smoked okra covering fresh sweet tofu - amazing contrast and a new taste for me (who knew okra could taste that good?)..... silken, velvety Chawan Mushi.... a hot egg custard soup that is one of my favorite dishes and this one was a delight-- with mushrooms and fresh gingko nut.... finally ochamozuke- a hot tea broth with baked rice and other tasty tidbits... (don't knock it - it's delicious) followed by red bean ice cream (red bean is just not one of my faves--- but good quality). Wakasan is a treasure with a few tables and a counter so it is a good place to dine on your own --- or with friends who know and want authentic Japanese cuisine..... now I was a little put off by the "omakase" and then the sign said that it was a yakitori (charcoal) house... I was wary of having to eat a large course multi-course meal without being able to choose.... I realized why they do what they do---- you will be in a good hands with a master chef and his team who know how to look after their customers by providing authentic dishes that are well balanced and carefully planned to to give you a tasty experience. So don't be put off by the omakase - they are gifts that will surprises you and it is very relaxed and friendly... and it is definitely not just a yakitori house.. it is so much more - a true gem hidden behind a small storefront with a tiny sign.... It is on Westwood bt. Santa Monica and Olympic on the west side of the street next to a small parking lot.... I tell you this as it took two attempts to find it and I had the address... Oh and 35.00 plus sake for this - a bargain for what you get in return--- and cheaper than flying to Japan where this place would be prized.

updated ultimate list to a lot of different types of cuisine

What a fantastic list----- thanks for taking the time to share!

Best of LA's Asian Foods...

SA SA YAAAA! HANDS DOWN BEST IZAKAYA IN LA AREA.
Authentic, helpful owner and staff, relaxed vibe and chillin' music...
I have spent a lot of time in Japan and the problem with Izakayas in Tokyo (the real hole in the walls not the tourist Izakayas offering "Japanese tapas") is that they only really like their regulars... So this is really a chance to enjoy a great izakaya and a friendly one too... it reminds me of Osaka... and you will always be welcome... no sushi... Sushi in an izakaya?! That is like serving steak tartare in a vegetarian restaurant. Sure, there are more popular and noisier (Musha which I really like but is far from really great and is not really an izakaya) but if you want a really unusual sake menu at reasonable prices and authentic small dishes then this is it....
So check it out and ask Hiro what he recommends that day...
CAMBODIAN (Khmer) Battambang... Amazing food, an enormous menu, friendly and charming despite its large dining room.... did I mention that it has ballroom dancing to Cambodian karoake?
THAI- JITLADA!
JAPANESE - Takao. Hide Sushi..... and Sa Sa Ya.... of course.... Kokekoko, Fu Rai Bo.... and on Ursusawa - yes it is unbelievably costly but sublime...
VIETNAMESE - Vien Dong (OC) Nguyen Hoang Restaurant on Valley Blvd in San Gabriel, CA....
KOREAN Soot Bull Jeep
Chinese Chung King (the real one - not the imitator close by....) Mission for dim sum... but I could go on... enjoy exploring our culinary culture in the greater LA area.

Jitlada's amazing Southern Thai menu

I read about it and came back to Jitlada - a restaurant that I had frequented regularly long ago but had just stopped going as it had gone downhill. Under a new owner, it is now, frankly, one of the best Thai in LA. Yes, things can be hot if served Thai style but they will adjust for ferang and some of the menu items are not "hot" but just spicy or full of fresh herbs and not spicy or hot. So many choices and all so delicious. So if you like Thai food then drop your fork and run..... Try anything and everything on the Southern menu and also on the regular menu. Just ask what they recommend and enjoy - and like me you will come back again and again and everyone at the table will not want to stop eating....
