Needed - dinner in Lima and Cuzco

Thanks for all the ideas. The problem is that so many Lima restaurants are closed on Sunday for dinner.

Private room in special restaurant for 40th celebration

I am looking for a room that holds 20-30 people at a restaurant that will really make for a memorable evening. Anywhere in Manhattan and $$ are not a problem for this event. Ideas?

Best Vietnamese in Manhattan

We tried pho viet huong on 73 Mulberry Street.
There was a special green papaya salad with beef that was wonderful, fresh, crunchy and loads of cilantro. We also had a beef cube dish the waiter recommende dwhich was medium spicy and very good. Seemed like a good enough place, nice service at lunch time in the midst of chinatown, just don't know how authentic.

cheap pre-opera dinner (if such a thing exists)

consider having a light dinner at the first intermission, which usually last about 30 minutes. the sandwiches and brownies at the Met's snack/beverage bars are very good. Also by not eating alot ahead of time you stay awake and tuned to the music and just have a nice light snack in the middle of the opera. we do it all the time.

My son is going to vietnam soon for a semester and I wanted to take him to try whatever passes for an authentic Vietnamese cuisine for a fun going away dinner. Ideas?

Il Buco - very disappointing, bad service experience

I had an entirely opposite experience. Had lunch, not dinner, with 6 people on a recent afternoon. We had the best meal in recent history, but were most impressed with the service. Admittedly it was lunch and late, so the restaurant was not even half full.

The room is inviting, the menu is vaired, and with 6 people we ate a variety, so I can knowedgeably say that from pannini to salad to soup to pasta to tuna the dishes were perfect. I'l return many times if it stay as good as it was my first time.

A Voce -- too noisy

A dining expeience has to be enjoyable from several aspects, sure the food is the main course but if the service and surroundings are not enjoyable, the food quality won't carry the expereince too far. The food last night at A Voce was superb, especailly the pastas. However when we were seated inside the noise level was absurd. No foursome could go to that restaurant and have a conversation over dinner, we even saw a young couple on a date move their chairs closer to hear one another. The designer of the space is crazy, no soft surface to absorb sound on anything ! We requested to have another table and the maitre d' was helpful, but said outside was the only spot that would be quieter. We had a very pleasant table outside, the weather was great, but the service outside was horrible. The waiter had far too many tables to watch and everytime our dishes arrived, the staff had no idea who ordered what and never offered cheese, pepper, water, bread etc.

If you were alone eating at A Voce, you would have a great evening because the food is worth it. If you want a complete evening experience, travel elsewhere.

Vegetarian in NYC

Follow-up -- Candle 79 was the choice, in part due to geographic convenience. We were not dissapointed. The starters were all excellent, especially the guacomole timbale (avocado and black bean cake). For main courses, the moroccan spiced chick pea cake was a favorite. Service was pleasant. Sit down stairs.

Bouley new view

I ate at Bouley recently and it had been a while since I had last been there. I think the service has gone downhill and the knowledge of the wait staff was poor. We did a tasting menu and the first three courses were rushed out to us. The wine pairings were only average and the wine was poured early and late.

The quality of the food and the plate presentation were almost perfect, as before the breads were mouthwatering, but I think the front of the house needs a bit of attention. I expect more at that restaurant.

2 weeks in Perth / Sydney / Melbourne

Just back from both Melbourne and Sydney. In Sydney, Longrain was a special eating experience. Its Thai with a bit of an Oz twist. Eggnet with pork and prawns was a very unique salad type of dish with great mint and coriander. In Melbourne, if you can get thru the noise at the downstairs bar, go to Taxi. The scenery is fun, but the sushi and fish is well worth a visit. One of our dishes which was an appetizer ( they call entree) of tuna done three ways was a favorite.

Eleven Madison Park

The Modern is good, but EMP warrants a better review, in my humble view. Don't get me wrong, I liked the Modern and find the bar area a fun add on, but for a special dining experience in a grand surrounding, EMP has my vote

Best service I have had in a long time. The food was special, but the presentation, the timing and the friendliness of the staff were what really made this a standout evening. Best dishes were an appetizer which was a scallop ceviche and a dessert which was a chocolate souffle.
