Tried Chickpea Kitchen (Chipotle/Piada style resto) in Sterling Heights [DTW]

This may be of interest to some figured I would post after reading VTB'spost for Estia Greek. I have eaten here several times and have always enjoyed the place and the food. It is located north of 17 Mile on the West side of Mound in an old Quiznos behind LA Coney Island.

Same concept as Chipotle/Estia you can get the wrap/bowl etc. Choice of rice or bulgar then meats different Shwarma, Kabob or Falafel, then 3 different hummus choices all good then the veggies. And Boagman the garlic sauce is pretty decent and no cheese to be found.

The owner and workers are very nice and the place is spotless. I believe a bowl is around $6. They also have a nice house made Mint Iced Tea at the drink station (unsweetened). On a side note I tried the chickpea soup and did not care for it. Whole Chickpea's in a curry broth not what I was expecting I was thinking more of a puree thick soup.

Here is a link to their website, and a picture of my Chicken Shwarma bowls and the Chickpea Soup.

Rehearsal Dinner around Rochester?

I am going to meet with the Manager and Chef at Sip's Gastropub in Washington. I have been a few times and the food and beverage selection is really good plus they have areas for private functions.

Anybody have any thoughts on this place?

Rehearsal Dinner around Rochester?

Funny we must be in the same circles somehow. I was considering Da Francesco as it is one of the best Italian places around and they have that back area. And La Saj was where the Bridal Shower was so that ones off the list. Great place though.

Rehearsal Dinner around Rochester?

Bad Brads is always a pretty good option but my son the groom is the kitchen manager at the one in NB so figured he might like something different. I will have to look up Fresco Pizzeria have not heard of it.

Rehearsal Dinner around Rochester?

It is Rochester MI.

Yes I was thinking the Kruse & Muer as well, just was worried about the parking.

Everyone in the party is from Romeo and further East so didn't want to go much further West such as the Clarkston Union but a very good selection.

Rehearsal Dinner around Rochester?

Hello hounds would anyone have a suggestion for a nice place to hold a rehearsal dinner for 20? The wedding is being held about 5 miles north of Rochester thus the rehearsal will be there as well.

The wedding party are mostly 22-25yo, want it to be nice but not to high end.

Thanks,
Gary

Trader Joe's YAY/MEH/NAY Thread - May 2015 [OLD]

The reformulated Breakfast Burrito is an absolute FAIL. This was once one of items I always had in the freezer for an easy breakfast. A few months back they disappeared form the store and when they did get restocked were not the same. Smaller and the filling went from chunks of potatoes, onions, turkey bacon and eggs. To a pulverized goo that is just gross. Plus now when you defrost them per instructions they just blow up. So NAY

Trader Joe's Breakfast Burritos

The new Breakfast Burritos are disgusting, I hope TJ has not slipped into the business mindset of profit over all else, disappointed was naive enough to believe in the brand. I went to their website and sent this as a product comment you all can do the same if your unhappy.

What a crying shame, that you have destroyed this item to save a few cents. With only a few TJ stores in Michigan I have to travel one way 40 miles to visit your store. This is usually about the time I run out of Breakfast Burritos and need to restock. Made two trips earlier this year to find them out of stock on my last trip I found them they looked different and a bit smaller but bought 8 packs and went home happy.

The next morning I prepared one as usual and found out why they were gone, reformulated and obviously made by a supplier that just does not care. First clue was when two large blisters appeared on the side of the burrito and some substance oozed out, this has never happened before. I usually then lightly brown them in a pan to get rid of the sog. Well the finish product sure did disappoint instead of identifiable chunks of things inside I found a gross disgusting paste. It was like a mix between wall paper paste and baby food. Really! Now I have seven packets of this crap plus one lone from the original pack that I have to deal with.

I really believed TJ was a different kind of company but with this inferior product it is painfully obvious that is not the case. At this time you have lost a customer and if your read forums probably many others as this product is getting panned across the net. Well at least I will save four gallons of gas and miles on the car.

Disappointed,

Gary

Marine City Fish Company (DTW)

Yes I have been several times, it is a real nice little place. The food is fresh and prepared well. It is a comfortable small town place and you will feel welcome. Probably your best option in that area nothing else of note until you get up to Port Huron.

Chicken Wings in Detroit?

The best wings for my money are on the appetizer menu at Bad Brads BBQ, which now has 3 locations. Their wings are large and meaty they come 4 to an order and are whole, the drum, flat and tip. The menu says one pound so these are 1/4 pound wings, not like the Cornish Hens that BW3 serves. Why these are so good is they first smoke them then fry them to order, no breading just the taste of a nicely smoked wing. You sauce them yourself with one of their 7 sauces.

The bonus is it's an appetizer so you can plow through some great BBQ as well.

What are you baking these days? February 2012 [old]

This morning I baked a loaf of Banana Bread with walnuts and tomorrow I am making the most amazing Carrot Cake with Whipped Cream frosting, this is for a Super Bowl party. I have made it several times before and it is incredible.

Does anyone do good Chicken and Waffles DTW

Have heard about them, have seen it featured numerous times on the Food Channel. Appears to be a Southern possibly Soul Food item. Has anyone had them and can they be had locally if so who does them right?

Seriously Good BBQ all from scratch in New Baltimore DTW

Where do I start, have heard a lot about this place but have never made the trip as it's a bit of a drive. What a mistake had lunch here today and the food is amazing. Everything is made from scratch and I mean all the way down to the potato chips.

Started with a pound of wings they were huge four whole wings make a pound and delicious. Had the St. Louis Ribs done perfectly well smoked and spiced, sides of Sweet Potato and Collard Greens both fantastic. The collards were done sort of like creamed spinach have had nothing that compares.

Plus a nice beer menu to round it out highly recommend.

Lellis [dtw]

Yes I have been and although it is expensive the food and service were top shelf. It is old school Waiters in suits with white linens and knowledgeable service. Also you need to consider that their meat is Prime and not a la carte you actually get soup, salad, antipasto sides of veg and potatoes and I believe you even get dessert as well.
We ordered the Chateaubriand for two and left absolutely stuffed and still talk about how excellent probably the best piece of meat we have ever ordered.

And in the end even without a coupon and a bottle of wine it was at the same price point as Roast, Saltwater and the Chop House when you consider having to pay for sides.

Hope this helps,

Gary

Frozen Fajitas Inspire Melancholy

Agree RedTop $7.99 you can have someone cook it for you. Although the Bertolli frozen soup line I think it is called soup for two is outstanding. Usually always on sale around here at the stores that carry it for $5.49 or $5.99 and worth every penny. That and some crusty bread and a perfect meal for two. Would be nice to see Supertaster review this one.

DTW Downtown Cafe in Rochester

Michigan pancakes have apples, walnuts, and cherries in them. Thanks for the input goatgolfer to bad on the French Onion Soup I have had it several times and usually has a nice deep broth with a touch of Thyme but nothing overpowering.
I would agree that breakfast is their forte and is what I usually gravitate to when I go. I have also found that what is on the specials board above the service area is usually your best option on that day instead of the daily menu.

DTW Downtown Cafe in Rochester

Have not seen it mentioned on here thought maybe this is a gem my fellow foodies have overlooked.

I seen the thread on the Chocolate Gallery Cafe which sounds a little like what I am talking about the Downtown Cafe which is located in Downtown Rochester 606 N. Main to be exact.

This is a very nice although small breakfast and lunch spot with top notch items all homemade.

Real Corned Beef Hash with poached eggs
Eggs Benedict done right
Cream Brulee French Toast
Michigan Pancakes
Wonderful French Onion soup etc. etc. etc.

If anyone has been there would love to hear your input, if not give it a try.

Mai's Thai restaurant on 12 Mile east of Mound in Warren [DTW]

Agree the Sala Thai on 14 Mile is average as well as the one in Eastern Market is above average for the area. Sala Thai has tried several different locations and none have lived up to the original IMHO.
I have heard good things about the Orchid Cafe on Rochester north of Big Beaver was there several years ago and it was good but that is old intel.
If you are a Chicken Satay fan there is a new Thai place that opened in Romeo at 32 Mile and Van Dyke called Yum Yum Thai hands down the best tasting and value Chicken Satay I have had. $5.95 and you get 5 Large very moist Satays that will fill you up each one is like a small chicken breast.

Tried Mestizo “Mexican Soul Food” in Warren [DTW]...

Speaking of Barbecue in that area there is a second location of Bad Brads opening on 23 Mile west of Van Dyke. Have not been to BB 1 but have heard good things. Also if you ever get a little further north about 29 1/2 and Van Dyke there is an awesome little Taqueria across from the Chevy Dealer. Very authentic Mexican street food and cheap. They used to run a food truck by the same name in the area on the weekends.

If you are not familiar with Detroit the best advice I will give you and this is not Detroit bashing as I am in the city a lot. " DO NOT WALK ANYWHERE FROM THE MOTOR CITY CASINO!" Explore the downtown, there are many great places but go in knowing that it is all cab rides. Or your best option might be to all pitch in for a Limo Bus to move you about in style.

Have a great time,

Gary

Detroit Food Tour

If the Dragos Family you mention is on 15 Mile in Sterling Heights you might want to pass. It is a little diner with IMHO pretty bland food.

Can't believe no one has mentioned thick Detroit style pizza, Loui's Pizza in Hazel Park or Buddys Pizza. You may also want to grab a burger in Northern Royal Oak at the Red Coat Tavern.
