What are you baking these days? February 2012 [old]

This morning I baked a loaf of Banana Bread with walnuts and tomorrow I am making the most amazing Carrot Cake with Whipped Cream frosting, this is for a Super Bowl party. I have made it several times before and it is incredible.

Does anyone do good Chicken and Waffles DTW

Have heard about them, have seen it featured numerous times on the Food Channel. Appears to be a Southern possibly Soul Food item. Has anyone had them and can they be had locally if so who does them right?

Seriously Good BBQ all from scratch in New Baltimore DTW

Where do I start, have heard a lot about this place but have never made the trip as it's a bit of a drive. What a mistake had lunch here today and the food is amazing. Everything is made from scratch and I mean all the way down to the potato chips.

Started with a pound of wings they were huge four whole wings make a pound and delicious. Had the St. Louis Ribs done perfectly well smoked and spiced, sides of Sweet Potato and Collard Greens both fantastic. The collards were done sort of like creamed spinach have had nothing that compares.

Plus a nice beer menu to round it out highly recommend.

Lellis [dtw]

Yes I have been and although it is expensive the food and service were top shelf. It is old school Waiters in suits with white linens and knowledgeable service. Also you need to consider that their meat is Prime and not a la carte you actually get soup, salad, antipasto sides of veg and potatoes and I believe you even get dessert as well.
We ordered the Chateaubriand for two and left absolutely stuffed and still talk about how excellent probably the best piece of meat we have ever ordered.

And in the end even without a coupon and a bottle of wine it was at the same price point as Roast, Saltwater and the Chop House when you consider having to pay for sides.

Hope this helps,

Gary

Frozen Fajitas Inspire Melancholy

Agree RedTop $7.99 you can have someone cook it for you. Although the Bertolli frozen soup line I think it is called soup for two is outstanding. Usually always on sale around here at the stores that carry it for $5.49 or $5.99 and worth every penny. That and some crusty bread and a perfect meal for two. Would be nice to see Supertaster review this one.

DTW Downtown Cafe in Rochester

Michigan pancakes have apples, walnuts, and cherries in them. Thanks for the input goatgolfer to bad on the French Onion Soup I have had it several times and usually has a nice deep broth with a touch of Thyme but nothing overpowering.
I would agree that breakfast is their forte and is what I usually gravitate to when I go. I have also found that what is on the specials board above the service area is usually your best option on that day instead of the daily menu.

DTW Downtown Cafe in Rochester

Have not seen it mentioned on here thought maybe this is a gem my fellow foodies have overlooked.

I seen the thread on the Chocolate Gallery Cafe which sounds a little like what I am talking about the Downtown Cafe which is located in Downtown Rochester 606 N. Main to be exact.

This is a very nice although small breakfast and lunch spot with top notch items all homemade.

Real Corned Beef Hash with poached eggs
Eggs Benedict done right
Cream Brulee French Toast
Michigan Pancakes
Wonderful French Onion soup etc. etc. etc.

If anyone has been there would love to hear your input, if not give it a try.

Mai's Thai restaurant on 12 Mile east of Mound in Warren [DTW]

Agree the Sala Thai on 14 Mile is average as well as the one in Eastern Market is above average for the area. Sala Thai has tried several different locations and none have lived up to the original IMHO.
I have heard good things about the Orchid Cafe on Rochester north of Big Beaver was there several years ago and it was good but that is old intel.
If you are a Chicken Satay fan there is a new Thai place that opened in Romeo at 32 Mile and Van Dyke called Yum Yum Thai hands down the best tasting and value Chicken Satay I have had. $5.95 and you get 5 Large very moist Satays that will fill you up each one is like a small chicken breast.

Tried Mestizo “Mexican Soul Food” in Warren [DTW]...

Speaking of Barbecue in that area there is a second location of Bad Brads opening on 23 Mile west of Van Dyke. Have not been to BB 1 but have heard good things. Also if you ever get a little further north about 29 1/2 and Van Dyke there is an awesome little Taqueria across from the Chevy Dealer. Very authentic Mexican street food and cheap. They used to run a food truck by the same name in the area on the weekends.

If you are not familiar with Detroit the best advice I will give you and this is not Detroit bashing as I am in the city a lot. " DO NOT WALK ANYWHERE FROM THE MOTOR CITY CASINO!" Explore the downtown, there are many great places but go in knowing that it is all cab rides. Or your best option might be to all pitch in for a Limo Bus to move you about in style.

Have a great time,

Gary

Detroit Food Tour

If the Dragos Family you mention is on 15 Mile in Sterling Heights you might want to pass. It is a little diner with IMHO pretty bland food.

Can't believe no one has mentioned thick Detroit style pizza, Loui's Pizza in Hazel Park or Buddys Pizza. You may also want to grab a burger in Northern Royal Oak at the Red Coat Tavern.

6 hours in Miami, have car, have appetite

Grab a free shuttle to the Crowne Plaza Hotel Airport, it's just south of the Airport very close. When you get there walk across Le Jeune to the Latin Cafe not fancy but decent Cuban Food and great Cuban Coffee.

Sterling Heights MI to Cleveland OH Road Trip need food suggestions asap!

Mon Jin Lau is nice with good food it's Asian Fusion which I know is abundant in the Toronto thru Hamilton area.

Not sure your times or route but if you do the 402, Paddy Flahertys is a nice stop in Sarnia neat place the Bar was actually brought over on a ship from Ireland. Or the Chip Trucks on the Sarnia side along the river under the Blue Water Bridge Yogi's is my favorite.

If you go 401, you might try Supino Pizzeria in Eastern Market. Or the Detroit style Pizza at Loui's Pizza in Hazel Park it's incredible. They are both closed on Monday though! If travel is on Monday try another Detroit Classic American Coney Island downtown.

In the Sterling Heights area, this area is very ethnic there are Middle Eastern places everywhere would recommend La Saj by Lakeside Mall or Ike's, if you really want an experience Beirut Palace at 15 Mile and Dequindre in the same shopping plaza grab some sweets next door at the Bakery and walk around the corner of the strip mall and grab a few Cheesie Breads to go from Maatouk Bakery for your road trip.

In Cleveland a great spot is Melt Bar and Grilled, have been several times and I think it is a genius concept and awesome food. Also the Westside Market is suppose to be an incredible hangout for foodies. Another great food spot is Sterle's Slovenian Country House stick to your ribs home cooking for sure.

Enjoy your trip,

Best Cornedbeef/Rueben in Detroit Metro-

As a point of clarity on the exterior of a building and the Quality inside lets look no further then one of your favorites PI Thai in Hazel Park. I would never have given it a try without your endorsement talk about a dump on the outside, but that is not where the magic happens. And with an over abundance of Thai places to chose from why should I have tried it.
The same with Scotty Simpsons I think the building is fine just suffers from the location would never have stopped without your endorsement. Both places proved to be excellent.

You need to give The Onion Roll a shot, although not the nicest looking is one of the best Ruebens you will find anywhere.

Solo dining in Madison, WI?

Another place you may find interesting is Lao Laan-Xang Restaurant, It is food from Lao very similar to Thai Food being they border each other but just different enough to be unique. If you really want to try something very Lao the dish with Chicken and Green Papaya is fantastic.

Lazybones Smokehouse is Open in Clinton Twp.

Stopped by for lunch on Tuesday and they did a perfect job of bringing the quality of the Roseville location north. The place is bright and clean with some TV's on the walls to keep your attention why they prepare your food.

It is similar to Roseville as you order at the counter, but here they give you a number for the table and bring out your food, so semi-self serve.

The food was spot on with what I have ordered before all the way down to the corn bread being a little to dry for my taste. I even mentioned this to Jerry the manager, and he was happy to hear a customer stating how similar the food is, as I am sure that is what they were striving for.

If you are in the Lakeside area or just really craving excellent BBQ this is the place you need to seek out. Two BBQ covered thumbs up on this one.

Sterling Heights: Near Lakeside Mall?

By far in that area for Lebanese is La Saj as mentioned. It is fantastic everything is made fresh to order even the Tabbouleh which is not mixed until it is ordered. Great attention to detail you can not go wrong here. Also their lunch menu is very affordable.

Avoid Big Buck Brewery In Gaylord, MI if you want an adult beverage

Why would I avoid Big Buck Brewery because they don't serve Tequila? Should I avoid all the fantastic little diners mentioned on this site because they don't serve beer? There are plenty of choices for decent food in Gaylord but Big Buck is the only one that is a Micro Brew so someone that likes unique brews this is their place.

And to answer Kansas the food is OK nothing earth shaking here, it is sort of in the league of a TGIF or Fridays IMHO.

They also brew their own Root Beer which is very good, a nice place to stop for a Root Beer Float as a treat.

Detroit who has the best Fried Chicken and why?

Thank You. I was driving home from Chicago on Monday and stopped at Haabs. WOW the chicken basket was just what I was looking for. It was all excellent all the way down to the soup. Thank you for the recommendation.

I chose Haab over Guernsey as I looked at the website for both and Guernsey stated they served Broasted Chicken. I have a Chicken Shack I drive by often and do like the broasted chicken there but I was looking for the real deal.

I did try the Gringa and you are spot on Tokyo, Flour Tortilla with choice of meat rolled with cheese and put on the griddle. I liked the Quesadillas a little better but both were good.
