Best Burger in Portland

on freemont - i haven't been to the E location, only westside (near corbett) . The west side location is kind of a hole in the wall.. i don't have a rec of which location to visit but i do recommend the burger with everything on it (don't wear white)

Best Burger in Portland

No, all McMennamin's have common ownership.

My main problem with some of the McMennamin's is the servic..... the only time in my life that I did not leave a tip was at one of their brewpubs.

Mexican Food across the USA 2007-describe yours

live in Oregon, the biggest change I've noticed is more roach coaches with kick ass tacos.

Woodburn is like a little mexico now, i bet they have some good places to eat there.

New to Portland - Relaxed, good food?

I think you might like to try the Delta Cafe on SE Woodstock
casual place and serve good southern food :)

Moving to Portland: recommendations

>>>>

Nicely stated.

Also agree with "clearskies" about Village Coffee, it's fun to sit outside and people watch with your drink (on a nice day).

forgot to mention in my earlier post.. Otto and Anita's I personally enjoy their food and love the dill pickle soup (Chef Otto used to work at the Trianon).

There are pros and cons to every neighborhood.

MAsked Bandit, where are you going to grad school at.. that could help with some realistic suggestions

Moving to Portland: recommendations

I live in Multnomah, it's not the greatest area for people without a car, but it's not totally horrible. You could do worse.

I think Thai Herb is good.

I like Seasons and Regions $6.95 lunch menu.
http://seasonsandregions.com/menu.asp?id=2

Baker and Spice is just up the street in Hillsdale i just got done eating some dessert from there.. soooo good!

John's Market has a great selection of beer and wine.

Steak tartare (pdx)

hey, so I've never tried steak tartare before but have been wanting to for a while. Any rec's for a well prepared steak tartare in Portland? serve appetizer or entre portion?
Thanks :)

Does anyone eat rabbit on Easter?

no rabbit. My family always does ham. We do eat eggs, the colored hardboiled eggs (egg salad or deviled or plain) and usually have a few quiches (crab and lorraine).

stove top thermal espresso maker

duh.. i should have picked up on that.. thanks :)

stove top thermal espresso maker

my grandmother has been using the same stove top espresso pot to make cuban cafe as long as I can remember. I think the cafe comes out wonderfully! (we use cafe bustelo or cafe pilon) I need to buy an espresso pot myself. i dont think I want one to make 9 cups, that seems a little large.

Ben & Jerry's Flavors

i like Phish food the best, sometimes it can be a little too much on the "extras" for the amount of ice cream.

I just heard about this gut bomb today "The Vermonster"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vermonster

Mystery item at Madrid tapas place

weird.. how did they try to explain it at the bar?

Egg Salad

i like mine pretty basic, egg, s&p, mayo, mustard and a little juice from a jar of hot&sweet pickles .. can also add a little diced pickle too

Blue stuff v. yellow stuff v. pink stuff

I like stevia for a sugar substitute.

Runny yolks over...

last night i came home hungry after having a few cocktails and made this
formed leftover cous cous into a patty and fried it so it was crunch on the outside, then I fried an egg over easy placed it on top of the cous couse (and popped the yolk) then topped it with some cheddar cheese..I was "drunk cooking" but the food actually tasty pretty darn good!!

Local Sodas?

i like Blue Sky. Wild Oats in portland has them still.

Japanese groceries

Anzen
across from the Convention Center
(736 NE MLK Jr )

Local Sodas?

local pizza chain (hot lips) recently started to make their own soda from local berries.. it is really tasty
http://hotlipspizza.com/new/index.html
i don't think they've started shipping or anything like that yet, but maybe in the future ??

Hot weekday breakfasts

I love this breakfast:
grilled red potatoes with spinach, salsa and cheddar cheese (or tofu)

i don't know about your 10 min rule, unless you partially cooked the potatoes ahead of time..

Runny yolks over...

egg (with runny yolk) on homemade pizza = good
- just add the egg in the center of the pizza near the very end of the baking

Bizarre dishes or cooking methods

in the outdoor school program (for 6th graders in portland public schools) all the kids have to make a grill out of a coffee can and a homemade candle to cook a hamburger on grill the buns by buttering them and sticking them to the side of the can. very un-chowhoundish :)

Need cake suggestions

angle food cake, homemade whipped cream and fresh berries (if you can get any good ones right now) that have been dusted with sugar

what's your favorite potato chip?

Tim's Cascade jalapeno or sea salt and vinegar

Your favorite oldie but goodie appetizer

I used to always make this when I was really young to "help" my mom. I still love to eat it as a snack once in a while
slice of ham, spread with cream cheese, sprinkle with green onion, roll up and slice into bite size peices, (put cute toothpicks in) YUM!

now i also do a grown up version with prosciutto, cream cheese and pickled asparagus tips

Regional attitudes towards heat

I agree.. most places let you choose your level of heat (mild, med, hot or 1-10). The problem is one places 5 is another restaurants 10.. not scientfic at all (no industry standard for the measure of heat)

Wouldn't carrot cake be at least as good or even better without carrots... discuss.

I'm not a huge dessert eater but once in a while i really enjoy carrot cake with raisins nuts and a small amount of the cream cheese frosting (and a tall glass of cold milk) IMO plain old spice cake can be boring.

What dessert with this dinner?

baklava :-P

also a Lebanese resto I like serves Knafé as one of their desserts
(pastry layered with ricotta and mozzarella cheese. Topped with light orange blossom syrup. Served warm.)
