What is your favorite kind of old fashioned cake?
This sounds delicious! I'm bookmarking it and hope to make it this fall.
What is your favorite kind of old fashioned cake?
My mom used to make a Queen Elizabeth cake that was delicious. I can't find her recipe but here's a link to one:
http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Queen-Elizabeth-Cake-I/Detail.aspx
She made it in a bundt pan, then after icing it with the boiled coconut & brown sugar icing it went under the broiler briefly. The cake is dense with dates and very moist. Really delicious. Happy birthday to your grandmother!
A plethora of raspberries...

I recently made this French Lemon Cream Tart and piled loads of wonderful raspberries on top. It was pretty and delicious. Not exactly unusual, but really good.
Secret Food Myths - Let the De-Bunking Begin!
Oh! I believed this one and have even passed it on to the young ones. Good to know.
We have been invited to...Cheesecake Factory
Many folks here dislike Cheesecake Factory and I have only eaten there once but I enjoyed my lunch. I had a salad that may have been called French Country Salad or something like that. The portions are very generous so I was glad I didn't order a sandwich or anything and the salad was absolutely plenty. It tasted good to me.
"80's" Cuisine?
Hey SS, I hope you had some Space Food Sticks to nibble on while you drank your Tang.
Food from the Sixties?
The French Chef first aired in 1963. Maybe a Julia recipe from that series?
Do you think I should have been comped?
Yeouch, rough crowd. It sounded to me that the server made it seem as though this happens now & then and that there was nothing to worry about. While I don't think sticking around was a great idea I can see why the OP might have thought the problem was going to be quickly cleared up. Granted, things went from bad to worse but sometimes we find ourselves in a situation we think we understand only to have it spin out of control. Actually, I'm surprised the mgr didn't clear the place. Failure to do so put patrons and staff at risk and led customers to believe all would be well momentarily.
One treat a day for the rest of your life?
This is too hard but my first thought was cheese. love the sound of the peaches with ice cream and your Mom's caramel sauce though, wow!
Unique Guacamole Ideas?
Well, I like my guacamole to be pretty simple but the other day when I had produce that needed using up I made a sort of peach salsa with peaches, avocados, jalapeno, onion, lime, salt, cilantro. It was actually really good and very refreshing.
This is the long way of suggesting adding diced peaches or nectarines. :) We loved it.
Goodie boxes for the college bound
If you wouldn't mind sending them unfrosted you could package them in boxes with dividers, like glassware boxes or wine boxes (I suppose you'd have to cut that down) or maybe even Christmas ornament boxes. Fill in space above them with little baggies of marshmallows or packing peanuts, or whatever you think of that's nice and soft with no rough edges to cut into the cake tops. You could send disposable knives and the frosting in its own container and she could have the fun of frosting and eating.
just by the way, i'll add that when sending cookies I stack them inside a ziploc, then put the tube-shaped bag of cookies inside one of those tubular wine gift boxes. I don't send it just like that, obviously, but place the cookie tube into larger box with the rest of the goodies going and the big round cookies hold together nicely.
She'll love whatever you send, though, no doubt. Tasty mail from home, always good!
Refrigerators designed for garages - worth it?
The only trouble we've had is when it's gotten so cold outside that the contents of the fridge froze and cases of canned pop and fizzy water burst all over the place. not big fun.

here's a link to a discussion, with recipe. It is really delicious.
Oh Giada, What were you thinking?
The photos are striking and have certainly gotten the job done, more attention to Giada and the FN etc.
But I can't help it, they give me the heebs. ish.
What was/is your favorite birthday cake?
I love cakes. As a child my birthday cakes were either homemade German chocolate or devil's food with mint icing. I still enjoy those, and so many others! (Candy's Chocolate Poundcake and a certain hazelnut & chocolate cake have been high on my list lately, but not for birthdays.) Love an angel food piled high with lots of fresh whipped cream and berries and/or other fruits like nectarines. There are many more I like but these are the cakes I usually have for birthdays.
This has been fun to read. Makes me want to bake but not til things cool down outside!
Hope you had a very Happy Birthday, Brendastarlet!
Too Many Peaches - what should I do?
we made peach salsa recently and it was very good. it was our version of refrigerator soup in that we were trying to use things up after a farmers market frenzy. (I was inspired by rworange and her $3. per day posts not to let any of those beautiful peaches go to waste!)
diced up lots of peaches, jalapeno, red onion, and avocado, added chopped cilantro, fresh lime juice, salt. awfully simple and quick to do and very refreshing on a hot day. i put it out late afternoon with tortilla chips and it was quickly devoured.

Looks great, can't wait to see it!
error on bill (your favor)--do you say something?
Being able to rip off a restaurant is just not worth dirtying yourself up over, imo.
Do the right thing, without expecting a restaurant to give you a reward for it. Their job is to feed you, yours is to pay the stated price. A mistake on a bill is accidental. Deciding to take advantage of it isn't. :)
And as long as I'm doing my angel act, I can't resist saying that applying the good old Golden Rule easily provides answers to questions like these for us. Corny, maybe. True, none the less.
jmo.
Just have to boast a bit
yes, yes! these are the questions i have, too. i wouldn't use it often so how long is used oil good in the fridge? well, at least i say i won't use it often. the extra 15 lbs i carry testify to the actual strength of my convictions.
love sweet potato fries and would love to be able to pop them out easily. plus,i want to make zucchini fritters with the Great Harvest.
Food to make someone whose relative has just passed
Once when we had a particularly difficult death in the family a friend brought a really nice
platter of vegetables, fruits and dips. When you just don't feel like eating you may at least snack with something like this there. I'm sure it helped us all get a little nourishment when we may not have otherwise. It was very thoughtful and, at least for us, practical.
Another time someone brought Italian beef and bags of nice rolls and a salad. We could heat it up or freeze it, except for the salad, of course.
Still, I think that a tasty casserole-type dish is never bad. Comfort food. If you have a recipe you really like I wouldn't worry about it seeming dull. Good is good.
Good of you to do it.
Best food or food related gift you have given or received?
great great great idea. will you share your recipe?
The world of vaccum sealers
I'd love to know which models folks are using. Never having used one I'm not sure which features matter most etc. There are so many models, v2440, v8y75, v485 and on...
Thanks.

Thanks for the great info and links. I usually only save small jars to use for viniagrette but will now hang onto some large ones, too. I am determined to pay closer attention to all of this, thank you for your help!
Wow, love the easy microwave marmalade recipe!

Thanks AMFM, that's a great idea. Next time!
Zucchini Muffins
This is a pretty basic recipe but I think you could fool around with it easily and come up with something that you'll enjoy.
Zucchini Bread
3 eggs
1 c vegetable oil
2 tsp vanilla
2 c shredded zucchini
8 oz can crushed pineapple, drained well (actually, I use the 16 oz can. I never even noticed until now that I've always used the wrong size! oh well, it works...)
1 tsp salt
3 c flour
2 c sugar
1/2 tsp baking powder
2 tsp baking soda
2 tsp ground cinnamon
3/4 tsp ground nutmeg
1 c chopped walnuts or pecans
Beat eggs until frothy; add sugar, oil and vanilla. Beat until foamy. Mix in zucchini and pineapple.
In separate bowl mix together all dry ingredients. Add to zucchini mixture and stir just until moistened. Bake in 2 greased loaf pans at 350 for 50-60 minutes.
* I use less sugar but then I often eat muffins with honey poured on them so make of that what you will.
I actually just made z bread this week and still have some in the kitchen. Now that I'm thinking of it, I think it's too oily. Think next time I'll cut the oil down and see what happens. With all the pineapple in there it might be fine.
Goodness knows I'll have the zucchini to work with. Amazing what just one plant can do!
Hope this helps.
