Zambra and Stemware
this happened to me recently at fig. However, the server was nice enough to put the bottle in the cooler for a few minutes while we finished our cocktails, and ten minutes later, it was perfect.
Very Specific Asheville Questions
Corner Kitchen is a great restaurant in the Biltmore Village with good food with a southern flare; fried green tomatoes, grits ect. they do Breakfast(brunch), lunch and dinner. Tupelo honey for a good breakfast. I have heard The Ritz does soul food cuisine, but have no info or reviews.
blood on chicken breast
I have an all natural, organic bone in chicken breast with an excessive amount of blood near the bone. Is this cause for concern?
Leftover corn on the cob?
whatever you do make cornwater from the cobbs. Great addition to stock for a corn/clam/shrimp type chowder.
Grilling scallops
another good idea, instead of using plain skewers, one can use rosmary sprigs after you remove the leaves.
Why do restaurants post up money bills by the register?
there is a restaurant I know of that had guests "autograph" dollars, with quotes, funny anecdotes, where they were from, ect. And it would post them all over. Every square inch was covered. This was a fish house, very casual, and it made for some interesting reading while waiting for food. Unfortunately they had to take them down for fire-code violations.
Top Dinner Recs for Asheville?
great point. we went last Friday and had a splendid evening in the courtyard. The food was very good, and the service was as well. Monday nights they have AYCE mussels with preparation choice, and a side of pomme frites for 12.95. also, on Mondays a bottle of house wine, a good little french white or red for 12.00. a bargain!
Do your Food magazines arrive late?
this happens with my food and wine. never when I subscribed to bon appetite though.
Chorizo (Asheville) review - Danna vindicated??
stopped in last night for a drink and an app. Just O.k. The drinks (margaritas) were lacking, of all things, Ice. I know it sounds pickey, but really, a necessary on a hot day. Each glass only had a few cubes. We got the "shrimp cocktail" Which was more like pico with chopped up shrimp. TONS (too much ) cilantro. Granted, we only had a tiny sample of the place. Would try it again, but just ok from the sample we did have.
reheating egg rolls
thanks for all the suggestions! the oven, and 30sec in the microwave worked like a charm!
Azalea Cafe? (Asheville, NC)
the good thing is the art is on a rotating basis, featuring new artists every few months or so. Now I must go get some ultimate ice cream!
Azalea Cafe? (Asheville, NC)
I think that all are important in a restaurant. Food, service, and for those of us who believe in sustainable living, local economy. It is a personal choice to support local businesses that in turn support local farms, artists and the like. Especially if they are good at what they do.
Making popcorn at home-preferred method?
sometimes I make it in the pot, but recently discovered Paul Newman's organic microwave popcorn. really quite good!
How long do you get to keep your table after you finish dinner?
Interesting thread. I agree and disagree with a lot of the points. The "type" of restaurant really doesn't matter. For one person what may be a quick bite at a diner for another person could be a rare dinner out. I think the suggestion of the manager offering politely to relocate to the bar is a nice suggestion, but if there is no bar then what? As a server I frequently come across "Campers" and feel that compensation in the tip is a must, especially if you sit long enough as to where the table could have been turned. What about if the table lingers long after closing? I have often had this happen. Even to the extreme of 2-3 hours after closing. I think it is rude to do things like turn up the lights, or sweep up around a table, but if the guest stays this long they are being rude as well. I recently had a manager that would tell a table, if lingered over an hour after closing "We appreciate that you are having such a nice time, however, our insurance policy only covers patrons up to an hour after closing" Clever, but transparent.
reheating egg rolls
Is there anyway to reheat an eggroll with out it becoming soggy?
Greenville-near Bi-Lo Center
Thanks for the tips. We went to Tsunami for the sushi, Great deal. We then went to The show and decided to eat after. After we went to Ropers Jazz Caverns. Interesting place, lots of potential, however...The menu was pretty horrible, basic bar food. The Bartender told us the chef was out of town, so this is what they had to offer. But, I did overhear another employee saying they had recently just lost there second chef. I would give it a bit before trying to let them get this situation remedied
Went back to Greenville today for another event (OBAMA!!). And decided to eat at Bistro Europa. Were excited when we sat down, looked like a good menu, and the server was pleasant. but then our server went away....another replaced him. We both ordered the bisque, (crab and lobster). The bisque was more like a chowder, with no essence of sherry (My favorite part of a bisque). No biggie. Salads were brought out. I had a Mozz, Tomato, greens and other vegis in a balsamic dressing. When I asked for more vinegar, I must admit I was disappointed that it wasn't a dark but a white balsamic. Still, no big deal..My friend got a blue cheese, dried cranberry salad with chicken added. Chicken was bland, virtually no seasoning, and overcooked, dry and stringy. She told the server of the issue, having removed the chicken from her salad to a side plate. He said "I will talk to the chef" We never saw him again until the check. When we asked for it to be separated he exhaled loudly, and said, "well it will be a few minutes" (I did observe that they had a high end computer system, splitting a check would take seconds) when he returned the chicken was still on my friend's check. She asked him why should she have to pay for some thing that was barely edible, and he said "Well I guess I can get it taken off if you want" What a service disaster. If the situation had been handled appropriately, I would revisit, after all, a majority of the meal wasn't bad. This situation was clearly a service issue, had the chef/manager been informed, I am sure the issue would have been rectified more appropriately.
Greenville SC restaurants
danna did you get tix to the Asheville shows??? I live here and was unable to get tickets...believe me i was persistent. Have a great time at the show!
Chorizo (Asheville) - mixed review
in NC restaurants/bars pay slightly higher tax on bottles~this is why there is a big ugly orange sticker on the front of the bottles.
Ordering PB&J at restaurants ...
a regular old jiffy and welches PB and J no. I would not order. however If it were a "gourmet" one, with organic, crunchy PB, bananas, local jam, fresh berries, great bread....yes, I would order. Especially if toasted.
corn....relish?
I am looking for a recipe/ideas about a relish/salsa to top crab cakes, with corn as the primary ingredient. The cakes are very simple, with some peppers and old bay. Want a relishy topper, without cilantro or black beans....any ideas???
Greenville-near Bi-Lo Center
I am going to Greenville for a show on Tuesday night, and am looking for something chowish with-in walking distance to the Bi-Lo Center. Ideally a fun, not too expensive spot for drinks and dinner. Any tips?
Girls night in Asheville
Sante would be great fun! If you are out late, Usual Suspects has decent pub grub, and a patio. For Just Drinks later, check out BoBo, hip Gallery/Bar on Lexington Ave.
Going Camping - Need a good dinner idea
Fajita's are great camping food! marinade the vegies (presliced) and meat in separate zip lock bags, get salsa, sour cream, guac, ect. Just thriw all the meat and vegis on the grill.
Asheville, NC - Restaurants that host private parties/events?
holy hell bele chere....yes stay away from anywhere near downtown. Best to find a place in Black mountain or Hendersonville. Be advised, finding lodging will be a huge issue. Bele Chere is Huge...100, 000 + people.
First impressions of Chorizo and Ultimate Ice Cream, Asheville:
ultimate is the best. I am addicted to there fresh sorbet. they recently had a Blueberry that knocked my socks off!
Asheville, NC - Restaurants that host private parties/events?
I do not know anything about the inn on church but Little Venice is your average every-day Greek/Italian. Not something that one would necessarily think of for a special occasion, more like an inexpensive lunch. The Black Forest is very dark (and kind creepy). I would second looking into Celine's On Broadway.
let's share a cooking "trick"
balsamic reduction as well (on strawberries) throw the lot on some arugula, toss with some fennel and goat cheese....yummm!
