BA Nov 21-Nov 28 food, wine, restaurants
Thanks. Here now and loving it. What a great city. The neighborhood is nice. Jumbo is awesome - also the little convenience store Mino Market has the basics and is very convenient. Found the apartment through apartmentsBA - it is very nice and the concierge there is outstanding in helping with anything you need.
In terms of dining, we've really enjoyed places which are not the places i researched on trip advisor, or chowhound, or via certain closed door restaurant websites. Our historical tour guide from Buenos Aires Historico recommended restaurant Manolo when we were in San Telmo touring, probably because we were in that area - and we loved it. Family style place, awesome italian food, packed on a Sunday with locals - very few tourists - mainly local large families. Other highlight was the Anuva Wine people's recommendation for El Primo - sat out on the sidewalk cafe table and had the tastiest steak we've had here (other place we had steak was Don Julio which was good but I thought the steak was better at El Primo) and the people watching was fun. Also seemed to be packed with locals. Had a great lunch at a place called Annetta (http://www.annettarestaurante.com.ar/). We were walking around after going to one of the museums or gardens - can't remember which, and needed lunch. The place was full and we thought that was a good sign. It was spectacular. The gratineed gnocchi were to die for. Homemade guitar pasta with tenderloin meatballs - incredible. I think Annetta is going to be hard to beat. Not sure where we are off to tonight but it will certainly be for more italian food. Wish we could live here full time although I think I'd weigh 400 lbs!
BA Nov 21-Nov 28 food, wine, restaurants
Hi all - my wife and I are spending a week in a lovely apartment in Palermo Buenos Aires on Oro 2835 between Avenue Cervino and Demaria . We would like to experience great food, wine, and restaurants. We tend to like really fresh, locally sourced bistro style food, I'd like to taste the best of Buenos Aires cuisine and explore the local markets. I'd like to taste and drink as many good Malbecs as possible - preferable good wine that I won't find exported to home. We have no problem spending $ in restaurants, nor do we have a problem eating street vendor food. Tend to avoid "scene" type restaurants as my focus is on great food not necessarily what is that latest hot spot - but if the hot spot has great food and wine then that is cool too. I'd appreciate recommendations and would appreciate recommendations on grocery stores and wine shops nearby. I would also love to know about markets - farmer's markets etc. if those happen at all in the city. Lastly, as Americans, I'm curious as to whether there are any restauransts serving a traditional Thanksgiving dinner and any bars/restaurants etc where US expatriates hang out. We're always travelling with the intent of finding places to retire to in our later years and BA strikes me as a place that might be a viable option. Thanks very much.
Good restaurants in St Croix?
I'm a resident here and current places which I think are worthwhile are:
Dashi - great sushi
Savant - local fish is always a good bet
Pickled Greek - food's been good - lamb kebabs are great - sorry you had a bad experience
Top Hat - try the frickadeller - its Danish comfort food and very good
Harvey's - great local food
Cafe Christine - lunch only - awesome french cafe - all freshly made including the pate
Ono's - out west - catch the sunset and have a good dinner
Chicken shack - it has good chicken, the rice n beans are great, and it is cheap!
Vinnies - best pizza on the island by far! Even on plastic plates the food is quite good!
Dallas Visitor Seeks Great Wine List at Great Prices
Hi all - will be visiting Dallas for work and would like to get some recommendations on restaurants with great wine lists. Food wise tend to go for bisro style food - great food without pretension. I know Houston well and love Catalan and Ibiza for their fantastic wine lists which are close to retail pricing. Are there any restaurants in Dallas which have the same kind of wine list/pricing which Catalan and Ibiza do?
Thanks for the recommendations.
Best food-driven island vacation?
Don't overlook Barbados.....good dining scene there.
Food near/at San Juan airport?
The San Juan airport food is inedible. Period. I agree - take a taxi to Isla Verde (won't cost you much - maybe ten bucks at most - its very close to the airport) and find a place to eat. The El San Juan hotel has good restaurants - a Palm Steakhouse. The whole isla verde strip has hotels with good restaurants. Good luck!
Dominica
Would anyone have recommendations on fine dining in Dominca. I'm spending a long weekend there and would enjoy a good meal or two.
Thanks
Barbados Report - Long'ish
If its still there, I must recommend the Fishpot. Recommended by Ushi (ownder of the Sea U Inn). She was right on. We had some really great food there. Right on the water, great ambience.....good food. An awesome dining experience. Ditto on the Daphne's reviews above - pricey but good!
Headed to St. Croix, seeking recs
As a full time St. Croix resident, I will try to steer you right. Many of the restaurants listed above were decent in their day but many have serious flaws which I will get to in time. Here is my short list of places to eat:
Bacchus - great food, great wine, great service. Consistently good year after year.
Salud - great food, good wine, mediocre slow service. The food is better than Bacchus and has a pan mediterranean flair to it.
Cafe Christine - lunch only - unpretentious casual french - excellent pies for dessert. Christine is an institution. She makes her own pate's.
Kendrick's - great food - good service - mediocre and pricey (for what it is) wine list. I have issues with the fact that every plate has the same toased apple rings and timbale of rice with it. Could we please get more creative with the side dishes at this price point?
Elizabeths at the Palm - If you have to dine in the evening on the water, this is one of the few spots I would do it at. Not as good as the above as you have to know what to order and what to avoid. They do well with beef and pork, but stink at pasta.
Off the Wall - great burgers and spectacularly tasty if greay onion rings. Candidate for worst service on the island (which is truly a feat). If you must have a burger on the water, this is the place. Plan on spending two hours. Bring bug spray. Don't go at night. The whole North Shore has had a string of night time restaurant robberies recently and the robbers have yet to be apprehended.
Deep End Bar at the Tamarind Reef Hotel - lunch only - run by the proprietor of the Galleon. Excellent and probably best spot for lunch on the island. Spectacular view right on the water, good if unexciting food. Reasonably paced service. Very safe - guards at entrances.
Sandcastles on the Beach - good lunches - nice dinners. Lovely spot to watch the sunset from the west end.
Local Food - Singh's take out, Harvey's on company street. Think Callaloo, stew goat, chicken roti, saltfish etc etc. These are excellent west indian eateries.
As for some of the others:
Tutto Benne - bad food and loud ambience. Crappy pasta - only thing good about it are the hot waitresses.
Savant - went way downhill years ago - price gouging on drinks - this one makes me sad - used to be awesome.
Bombay Club - bad food and dirty kitchen
Cheeseburgers in Paradise - nasty food, in a parking lot with lots of bugs - I don't get it? Why why why?
Case Place - lunch food okay if you can stand the cigarette smoke - bring a change of clothes cause you will reek like cigarettes for the rest of the day.
Rum Runners - chain on the water. poor to mediocre at best.
Been too long to say:
Sunset Grill - used to be good - west end - been too long for me to comment.
Le San Tropex - used to be good - west end - been too long for me to comment.
If you would like more info on what to do, where to go etc. etc. please feel free to ask.
I hope you enjoy our island!
