Awesome!
glad it worked out for you.

that is pretty impressive service, and it sounds like you had a great time.

Omaha's Best 1 night

Grey Plume and Boiler Room are both doing good things

http://www.thegreyplume.com/
Seasonally-driven, contemporary cuisine from locally-grown
produce and livestock. The life-cycle of food begins even before the seed and
should always end with an emotional connection. Understanding the journey to the
plate evokes a deeper appreciation and respect for the meals we share. We seek to inspire
and elevate the way Omaha thinks about food through culinary excellence, the promotion of
local foods and growers, and a commitment to community.

http://www.theboilerroomrestaurant.com/
The Boiler Room restaurant brings to Omaha a restaurant that provides the full experience. Chef Paul Kulik's menu reflects a love of farm fresh foods and changes daily to feature the best and most exciting ingredients. Sommelier Jesse Becker produces a thoughtful wine list that tailors attractive and interesting wines to the menu. The bar features craft bartending with house made grenadines, infusions, bitters, and garnishes. Digestif and aperitif lists round out the liquor program. An artisan cheese board with house embellishments serves as either an appetizer or dessert. And desserts, also changing daily, take advantage of the fresh creams and fruits of nearby farms. For coffee, Cultiva brand espresso is skillfully pulled.
Though the Boiler Room takes every detail of the dining experience seriously, is so that the diner does not have to. The diner's only trouble is to sit back, soak it all in, and decide where to start.

although quite opposite of "hole-in-the-wal", Omaha holds the distinction of having the "Greenest Restaurant in America" with the opening of The Grey Plume a couple months ago.

seasonal, local New American.
the chef apprenticed at Tru and Alinea.

i have not been yet, but all word i've heard has been overwhelmingly positive.
wander around their site a bit...it's pretty informative:

http://www.thegreyplume.com/

Where do foodies eat in Omaha? No steak houses allowed. Any great ethnic food?

so you're buckling for Italian...but twice?
i'd replace Vivace from your list w/ somewhere else.

if you're staying in the Market then Wheatfield's Express is a gimmie for breakfast...
although, if you are here over the weekend it would be theoretically possible to do a grazing tour of the Farmer's Market on Saturday morning as a bit more unorthodox choice

Where do foodies eat in Omaha? No steak houses allowed. Any great ethnic food?

this is actually a fairly inaccurate statement.

in the Panhandle maybe, or elsewhere with populations barely into 5 figures.
but in the "big city(s)"?
no, not really.

Where do foodies eat in Omaha? No steak houses allowed. Any great ethnic food?

although the request is pretty broad, here's a few by category.
i even included Pizza.

please note, with the way restaurants have been failing over the past year or so some of these may no longer exist.

Omaha - 2010 CWS

there's a couple really good dives around there.
if you like that kinda thing.

not to far to the east is
Richies Chicken & Hamburger
3528 Center Street
Omaha, NE 68105-2424
(402) 346-4650
stick to the namesakes. cash only. closed Mondays.
if anyone in your party desires any level of decor stay far, far away.
it's just one room - kitchen, dining area, counter all together - so you'll smell like fried food all day long.
get it to go if any of that bothers you.
burgers and chicken are ex-cell-ent.

and you'll be right across the street from
Amato's Restaurant
6405 Center Street
Omaha, NE 68106-2821
(402) 558-5010
homemade Italian Sausage
good (and heavy) breakfasts too...the ricotta pancakes are quite nice.
both of those items (and others) were profiled in a 'Diners, Drive-Ins...' spot:

Any good eats in Omaha?

all good advice.

the place you saw on DDD was probably Dixie Quick's :

A Chowhound Moment in Omaha

for best results i recommend going to Bangkok Cuisine outside of lunch hours Monday through Friday.

they generally do pretty heavy business from the surrounding offices and really don't have the staff or kitchen to handle it sometimes.

last time i went around noon it took 90 minutes in and out the door for an order of Larb Gai.
really good food, though.

they are usually totally slammed between 1130 and 1 during the week.
but after 1 and on weekends you can frequently have the place to yourself.

they used to do a lunch buffet a couple days a week...not sure if they still do or not.

Toronto Hound seeks rec near Crowne Plaza (Omaha)

you're on the wrong side of town for a wide selection of Mexican food, that's all in the southeast.
also, that hotel is right next to the Interstate, an Expressway, the busiest street in town, and a creek...so walking options are rather limited.

there is one place that is about 7 blocks away on foot that has really good fried chicken and homestyle cooking:
Jack & Mary's Restaurant
655 N 114th St
(402) 496-2090
menu:
http://www.foodinaflashomaha.com/menus/JackAndMarys.html
nothing really fancy or super exciting.
besides fried chicken i'd also recommend 'chicken-fried' anything, chicken and noodles, hot beef or turkey sammich.
the burgers and tenderloins are kinda nice, too.
any of the homemade desserts are generally quite good.
the clientele tends to be heavy on senior citizens, so it usually doesn't feel like a real jumpin' joint.
fyi, salad bar counts as a side.

next door and across the street from this place you have a few other choices if you wanna google 'em.
all are good:
Stokes Grill and Bar, Taj Kabob and Curry, Feta's Gyro's

you do happen to be not far from the only moderately authentic Mexican place in about a 12 mile radius:
Rivera's Mexican Food
12047 Blondo St
(402) 932-1381
website with menu:
http://www.riverasmf.com/
i like the chilaquiles, chicken pibil, enchiladas ranchera, and mole dishes.
this place is quite good, and the staff has been welcoming, helpful and appreciative every time i've been there.
ask for the hot salsa.

for breakfast you probably should solely consider:
Wheatfields
1224 S 103rd Street
(402) 955-1485
www.wheatfieldscatering.com
website seems to be down
here's a cache of breakfast/lunch menu:

go hungry. real hungry.
the size of their menu and portions are ridiculous, but just about everything is good.

Hot Dog Shack in Omaha

not sure if it qualifies as a shack, but as far as i know Chicago Dawg House serves one of the better dogs in town...Vienna Beef products and they also serve Po' Boys, Italian Beef, Brats, Polish Sausage.
the owner seems to be very much into what he is doing also.

Omaha... Quintessential & Mexican

oh there's definitely tons of good food to be found on the dining scene here.

i've not had any of the seafood at Guaca Maya.
and their menu is so large i've not yet found my sweet spot on it.
however, anything i've had there has been above average.

i like Anthony's better than the chains and would opt for the Cowboy Cut ribeye. some, though, would probably prefer the filet or prime rib.

for Chicken Fried Steak i'd look at these:
Shirley's Diner
5325 S 139th Plz
(402) 896-6515‎

Millard Roadhouse
13325 Millard Ave
(402) 891-9292

Omaha... Quintessential & Mexican

Amigo's is fast food...it's pretty much the same as Taco John's (a baby-step above Taco Bell).

Romeo's is a baby-step above the fast food places, but still not someplace I would spend money.

La Mesa is consistent. i like them quite a bit. they are a regional chain.
i find them to be one of the best around for narrowly riding the authenticity line using traditional flavors and dishes but without getting too ethnic for the general public. order from the 'Preferencia del Cocinero' section of their menu for the best results: Chile Colorado, Chili Verde, Chilaquiles.
web site is here:
http://www.la-mesa.com/
menu is here:
http://www.la-mesa.com/imagenes/menumesa.pdf

Maria's is a 'different' style of Mexican restaurant. i guess i would have to say it's more like some Southwestern US homestyle Mexican...i'm not sure how to explain it. if you've ever been somplace that has an enchilada gravy as opposed to sauce, that's what they do here.
not bad, but not really my style.

Alvarado's is fast food Mexican also, but an independent family owned place instead of corporate chain. pretty good for what you get, but nothing really stand out. the best thing about the place is they are open after midnight.

Lithiuanian Bakery is ok. the best thing there is the Napolean Torte..get one to go. i'm not sure the Kafe part is all that much to holler about.
http://www.lithuanianbakery.com/index.html

Jams is ok. decent new American stuff. good, if that's your thing.
http://www.jamseats.com/

the Dell is mostly a bar. fish and chips is their big draw.
http://www.dundeedell.com/

other Mexican places I would take a look at:
El Alamo
(402) 731-8969
4917 S 24th St

Guaca Maya
(402) 733-3440
5002 S 33rd St

Rivera's Mexican Food
(402) 932-1381
12047 Blondo St

in the UNO area if i had to pick one meal it would be the Vietnamese Asian restaurant. not in any way quintessential Omaha, but the place i would pick personally. they do Vietnamese and Thai:
Vietnamese Asian Restaurant
(402) 397-9125
7212 Jones St

if you wanted sterotypical Omaha, then keep heading south and go to Anthony's for steaks:
Anthony's Restaurant & Lounge

7220 F St

Omaha - with kids

the Surfside is still open.

just be aware that they have a limited menu:
fried chicken or fried catfish, fries, corn fritters

and that's about it.
i'm not real big on it because i don't care much for catfish, and there's better chicken to be had in town.
not bad, just don't expect anything transcendental.

the setting is somewhat novel, however and i would think the kids would dig it (assuming they have no water-related phobias).

also be aware it's not uncommon to get mooned by passing boaters.

Omaha, NE Restaurants?

there's not really a lot of ethnic restaurants downtown.
these couple are the best:

Ahmad's Persian Cuisine
1006 Howard St
(402) 341-9616
Great food and service. Prices are a bit high for my tastes, but I would say it's generally worth it. Reservations strongly recommended.
A menu is available on this site:
http://www.omahatogo.com/index.php

Indian Oven
1010 Howard St
(402) 434-4856
Generally solid Indian food. Great service. Reservations highly recommended for dinner.

and then there's this place, which i have never been to:
The International Cafe
2416 Farnam St.
(402) 345-1568
African restaurant adjoining a grocery store. One of a few restaurants in town that serves goat. This review from the local paper a couple years ago will give you the general idea:
http://www.omaha.com/index.php?u_np=0&u_pg=1458&u_sid=1449359

These two (non-ethnic) places are also downtown and generally considered to be two of the better restaurants in town:
Flatiron Cafe
1722 Saint Marys Ave
(402) 344-3040
http://www.theflatironcafe.com/
Upper mid scale. Solid food. Menu on their site. Reservations strongly recommended.

V Mertz Restaurant
1022 Howard St
(402) 345-8980
http://www.vmertz.com/
Upscale. Pricy and classy. The setting in the Underground Passageway is really nice. Menu on their site. Reservations strongly recommended.

for breakfast take a hike up the street from the hotel to:
Big Daddy's Diner
1901 Farnam St
(402) 345-8839
Diner atmosphere. Stupidly huge portions, breakfast all day long. Great homemade food.

Breaded Pork Tenderloin Sandwiches in Omaha

I would recommend Burger Lust over Dinker's.
I usually go for the Chili Cheese Burger (served open faced under a huge pile of chili and cheese) or the Trish (sweet mancini roasted peppers, grilled onion, mozz, and parm).
Be aware burgers are frequently served quite a bit shy of well done which freaks some people out.
And all their breakfast stuff is pretty good, too.

Tenderloin usually not one of my first menu choices when dining out, but based on their success with similar styles of food I would suggest one of these:
Shirley’s Diner
5325 S. 139th Plaza
Millard, NE
(402) 896-6515
Great homestyle, diner fare. Seems to be mostly from scratch. Great chicken fried steak.

Richies Chicken & Hamburger
3528 Center St
Omaha, NE
(402) 346-4650
If it's something fried this place serves it the best. Their chicken is stupendeous. And their Bacon Double Cheeseburger is by far my favorite burger in town. Veggies are usually canned and I suspect the mashed are instant. Don't care.
The restaurant is a single open area comprising kitchen, counter and dining area - - so you will smell like grease allllllllllll day long.

One of the local free weeklies recommended this place for PT Sandwiches last year:
Marleybone Tavern
3710 Leavenworth St
Omaha, NE
(402) 341-3232
The article referred to their PT as "..The size of an elephant ear, this pork tenderloin sandwich ($4.25) is one of the best in town – big and meaty, and breaded just right in between a fresh bun...".

If you check out Barrett's Barleycorn somebody else rec'd, be aware the PT is a special.
Available only on Thursdays and Fridays. It is very popular.
Barrett's Barley Corn
4322 Leavenworth St
Omaha, NE
(402) 554-5805
useless website: http://www.barrettsomaha.com/barrettsbarleycorn/
Their PT Sandwich is described as: lightly breaded served w/ cheese, mayo, lettuce, tomato, pickles, and onions. Served with chips and a pickle. Thursday and Friday only, $7.95.

One other possibility might be Bronco's - which is the last non-franchise, locally owned and operated fast food place left in Omaha. If you want to see what the fast food take is on one:
Bronco's
4540 Leavenworth St
Omaha, NE
(402) 551-7477
http://broncoburgers.com/index.html

Bronco's
1123 S 120th St
Omaha, NE
(402) 334-7477
http://broncoburgers.com/index.html
Some people hate em. I love em, though.
Greasy? Yes. Fresh? Just about always. Frozen? No.

good luck
be sure to call ahead - some of these places have limited hours.

Kona Grill Troy

fairly standard chain fare on the "less offensive" side of the spectrum.
but not worth seeking out.

their menu is online:
http://www.konagrill.com/#

Omaha: What do you recommend for a get away weekend?

yes it is.
note they are open lunch and dinner hours only (not in between).
pretty sure they might be closed on Sundays, too.
make reservations if you're trying to go for dinner.
Indian Oven
1010 Howard St
(402) 434-4856

nowhere near the Old M, but this place is my new go-to spot for Indian in town:
Taj Kabob & Curry
668 N 114th St
(402) 933-1445
http://www.tajofomaha.com/
More homestyle in atmosphere and food than most places in town, and the most reasonably priced Indian food I've seen...especially at lunch.

Omaha: What do you recommend for a get away weekend?

Ahmad's Persian Cuisine
1006 Howard St
(402) 341-9616
http://www.omahatogo.com/omaharestaurants.php?cat=Middle+Eastern
Probably the only place in the Old Market that I would consider having "unique" food. Great food and service. Prices are a bit high for my tastes, but I would say it's generally worth it. Menu available on the site above. Reservations strongly recommended.

Flatiron Cafe
1722 Saint Marys Ave
(402) 344-3040
http://www.theflatironcafe.com/
Upper mid scale. Solid food. Menu on their site. Reservations strongly recommended.

V Mertz Restaurant
1022 Howard St
(402) 345-8980
http://www.vmertz.com/
Upscale. Pricy and classy. Love the Underground Passageway setting. Menu on their site. Reservations strongly recommended.

Richies Chicken & Hamburger
3528 Center St
(402) 346-4650
Dive. Great chicken, very good hamburgers. Canned vegetagbles and instant potatoes. But if it's fried, it's great. One single open room comprises the kitchen and dining area so you will leave smelling like grease. No cards, bring cash. 3-4 miles out of the Old Market/downtown area.

Big Daddy's Diner
1901 Farnam St
(402) 345-8839
Diner atmosphere. Stupidly huge portions, breakfast all day long. Great homemade food.

Louie M's Burger Lust
1718 Vinton St
(402) 449-9112
1/3 pound hand pressed burgers available in all kinds of combos. A $2 basket of fries will feed a family of 3. Odd hours, like 6-2 or something. Not sure if they take cards yet or not. Several breakfast options are available all day long. Couple miles outside of downtown/Old Market area.

Where can I find guajillo and pasilla chiles in MSP?

if you have trouble finding any for some odd reason you can substitute:

guajillo : New Mexico, Colorado, California
pasilla : Ancho, Mulato, Negro

the ancho and mulato are milder than the pasilla and not quite as earthy, but work just as well.

sometimes you'll even find that Anchos, or even their fresh form the Poblano, labeled as pasillas; and sometimes pasillas will be labeled as Negro.

it's no big deal to experiment a little and sometimes you really won't be able to tell the difference, especially when you start blending more than one kind of chile.

chilaquiles kc?

not getting much help here, eh?

i live in Omaha and don't have a lot of exposure to Mexican in KC, but there is a (regional) chain here that i eat at regularly called La Mesa that has a location in Overland Park...i know their chilaquiles are good here.

i've ate at a couple of their locations outside of my state and the quality seems to be fairly consistent.

http://www.la-mesa.com/
the 'Preferencias del Cocinero' portion of the menu is their strong point.

they rarely 'blow me away', maybe becuase i've been eating there for 8 years, but it's probably the restaurant i frequent most often because of consistency.

Omaha - Gorat's or Johnny's Cafe or...

the places i go for just meat are mostly in the realm of small, smoky greasy spoons.
great eating, but not exactly the types of places most people are too excited about driving into town for.

Bohemian Cafe is really good for their style of food (Czech/East European).
I tend to go for spicier fare so it's not a place I frequent regularly.
Definitely recommended, though...i like the Svikova, and for sides be sure to get the dumpling and sweet and sour cabbage.

Omaha - Gorat's or Johnny's Cafe or...

I'd vote Johnny's over Gorat's.
Just about anything over Gorat's.

I'm partial to Picollo Pete's myself.

And I still feel sad whenever I think of all the great food people miss out on in pursuit of the mythical Omaha steak experience.

Omaha for the College World Series

it always disappoints me to see herds of people flocking to El Aguila from West Omaha - there are so many better places around that area that will never see any of these people's business.

all my meals there have been pretty average.
however, the potato enchiladas are the best thing they serve.
- besides the gallon margaritas.

Gorat's

thanks - nice to hear something honest about this place for a change

; )

Omaha for the College World Series

Downtown:

V Mertz Restaurant
(402) 345-8980
1022 Howard St
www.vmertz.com
- Probably the best high-end spot in the area.

Flatiron Cafe
(402) 344-3040
1722 Saint Marys Ave
www.theflatironcafe.com
- The other best high-end spot in town.

Ahmad's Persian Cuisine
(402) 341-9616
1006 Howard St
- Probably the most unique dining experience in the Old Market. I think it's a little pricy for what you get - but the food is always, always great.

Indian Oven
(402) 342-4856
1010 Howard St
- One of the best Indian spots in town. Make reservations if going for dinner. Small selection of some nice single-malt scotches, too.

Liberty Tavern at the Hilton - Omaha
(402) 998-4321
1001 Cass St
www.libertytavern.com
- Contemporary American by one of Omaha's better chefs. Definitely not what I'd expect to find in a hotel in Omaha, of all places.

and outside of downtown:

Malara's Italian Restaurant
(402) 346-8001
www.malaras.com
2123 Pierce St
- Great home-style Italian food. Everything is homemade - sauce, sausage, meatballs and fresh pasta. Just like nonna used to make.

El Alamo
(402) 731-8969
4917 S 24th St
- One of the better Mexican restaurants in town that is still highly authentic, but habla Espanol is optional.

Is there good barbecue in Omaha?

Jims Rib Haven
(402) 451-8061
3801 Ames Ave
- Arguably the best in town. Not in the best neighborhood, though. Seating is super-limited (more of a take-out place). Been in business for going on 20 years and still remains a underappreciated place in town (read: most white folk are scared to stop here).

Big Horn Mountain Barbecue
(402) 934-7427
2524 S 13th St
www.bighornmountainbbq.com
- I'm a little hesitant in recommending this place. I've had some of my most underwhelming 'que meals in town here. However, this place actually does beef ribs pretty well and the featherbones are good. I find all of their pork less than desirable...and I think they have a tendancy to oversmoke here. The hot wings are the main attraction here, though - smoked full-size wings with a dry rub, no sauce, that actually owns the name "hot". I love these things...they always ask if you've had their hot wings before when you order them. And for good reason. I'm an extreme chili-head, and these are 'effin hot...love 'em.

Amarillo
(402) 291-7495
303 Fort Crook Rd N
Bellevue, NE 68005
http://www.amarillobbq.com/
- Great sausage! Don't go too early, though...I've been served obviously day-old, dry product here in the early lunch hours. Probably my favorite restaurant for 'que.

Big C’s BBQ & Pit Stop
429 West South Omaha Bridge Rd. (near S. 24th St.)
Council Bluffs, IA
Phone: 712-366-1032
- Newer place. Solid food. Inside a gas station, just over the bridge into Iowa.

- Best 'que between here and Kansas City. No lie. Everything is great. These guys have been in business for years and have been raking in awards for over a decade in competition. Used to have a riverfront restaurant in Plattsmouth...now quietly hidden in Cedar Creek, Nebraska. They have some great daily specials...if you're lucky it's an 'all-you-can-eat' one! Well worth the drive in my opinion.

Need Recs for Bellevue & Omaha
