BBQ in Richmond!

As you travel west on Broad Street it will be on the left behind a professional building just after you pass Hockett Road. Look for the sign out front. CD's operates out of a trailer in the back.

Plug for Alexander's (Claxton Road just north of Patterson) and CD's off Broad Street out in Manakin-Sabot. Both have really tasty ribs.

Morimoto or Le Mer?

Thanks. I've sat at the tables a couple of times and on this trip there will only be two of us so it's the perfect opportunity to give the counter a try. I've already called and updated my reservation.

Italian bakery near Richmond, VA?

Well I've only seen the orange ricotta cake there once. I'm guessing you simply use OJ and orange zest in place of the lemon equivalents.

While not overly friendly, I've always had pleasant service there. There is a bit of Millenial angst but that's pretty prevalent in the Fan. ; )

Morimoto or Le Mer?

Sounds like you had the same table my wife and I had for our anniversary this past August. I also preferred our table over the ones looking out at the ocean. And the service, while formal, was still friendly and not stuffy. I actually thought it had a very ohana feel to it.

Bill, I recall you mentioning dining at AW and talking about the bar service. I'll be there next month and have had meals there at the tables as has my dining companion. Would you recommend we do the bar this time around and if so do you simply make that request when you reserve?

I believe the "cookies" referred to are sfogiatelle. 8-1/2 also has great small loaves/rolls that they use for their sandwiches but also sell individually. They will also sometimes have a ricotta cake. I've had their lemon and orange versions. The lemon was heavenly and I bug them all the time to prepare it to no avail.

Brewpub in Richmond VA

Capital Ale House has a huge selection of beers on tap (like 60 at any one time) and in bottles but they don't brew their own. The food there is better than at Legend but a bit overpriced in my opinion. Legend has some nice brews (the brown ale and porter are my favs) and decent food. Plus they have that great deck with views of downtown from the south side of the James River.

Also not a brewpub, and with no burgers on their menu, is Mekong which besides the outstanding Vietnamese food has a very diverse beer list including not your ordinary brews on tap. Sit and eat at the back bar for the best experience. An will take care of you.

Saturday lunch in Richmond?

I read somewhere (not the website apparently as I can't find it there) that Secco has a mid-day deal (like 1-4pm) where you can order 3 small plates for a nominal fee. Dang, I wish I could find where I had read that. It would be worth a call over there to find out though.

Annniversary / Birthday - not exact date?

I was recently in Hawaii and thought to make a reservation at Le Mer to celebrate our 20th anniversary. The dinner was on July 27th but our actual anniversary isn't until August 25th. When I called I told them that we were celebrating our 20th anniversary and requested a table near the windows with a view. The woman I spoke to made no promises but was very nice. When we arrived the hostess immediately welcomed us and congratulated us on our anniversary. We were taken to a choice table at the window overlooking the House Without A Key (nice that we could enjoy the music and hula) and with a view of Diamond Head. I jokingly told her that surely she could do better. Everyone who came to our table also mentioned our anniversary and we were given complimentary dessert (although we had already ordered dessert that came with our order) with the aforementioned greeting in chocolate.

Overall it was a great experience and not once did anyone ask for our marriage certificate as proof. The aloha spirit is alive and well at the Halekulani. Of course that's what eating at a AAA five-diamond restaurant will get you.

Newport News restaurants?

My rec in Newport News would be for Village Kabab on US 17. It's owned and run by a nice Pakistani couple and all of the food is cooked to order. Fresh and tasty. They also offer at 10% discount to military, teachers, and law enforcement personnel.

Must Visit Places in Oahu

I just got back from Hawaii a couple of days ago. If you're on the North Shore I'd add Ted's Bakery for haupia chocolate cream pie. And if you're looking for a shrimp truck experience up that way, you might want to consider the shrimp plate at Ted's. Good garlic and butter seasoning but the difference is that they pre-shell their shrimp AND it comes with a slice of your choice of cream pie. The strawberry guava cream pie is good as well. I heard that their pies were better before they became a bit more commercial (you can get them at Oahu Foodlands) but since I hadn't had them before I thought they were pretty darn good. ; )

As for things to do, since you'll be jet lagged and getting up early, head over to the Honolulu Fish Auction and check out the action. Think mini-Tsukiji. Get there before 8am or it will be all over. And you can grab breakfast at Nico's afterwards (just a building over from the auction). You'll need to wear shoes (no sandals or slippahs) to enter. It's open to the public....just stay out of everyone's way as they go about their business.

A visit to House Without A Key at the Halekulani hotel for pupus around sunset is also warranted. You and your daughter will enjoy the quality musical entertainment and definitely the accompanying hula by either Kanoe Miller or Debbie Nakanelua. My favorite group is Pa'ahana.

Korean Tacos in Richmond?

You might try these guys:

http://bokatruck.com/

I had their Asian and Mexican tacos a couple of weeks ago when the truck was in Innsbrook. The Asian wasn't bad but the Mexican taco wasn't very Mexican in my opinion.

Thanks for the help folks. I'm now on Kauai and did find some pre-packaged fresh pasta at Safeway in Kapa'a. It'll have to do.

Rehearsal dinner ideas in Richmond, VA?

I'll have to keep that in mind about the rooftop at Havana. And I'll definitely let my wife know as she also teaches med AND dental students (but mostly grad students) at VCU. : )

And their prix fixe dinner (choice of starter, entree, dessert from select menu before 7pm, Mon-Thu) is the best deal in town.

Halfway through the World Cup and what I want to know . . .

Good one. I was there for the Spain-Switzerland match. Nice atmosphere, attentive staff, and a decent cafe con leche. I had the tortilla con chorizo which was a bit to be desired. Not sure about the other food choices.

Anybody been to Shakespeare Pub?

Halfway through the World Cup and what I want to know . . .

Went to Dublin Square downtown this morning for the USA-ALG match. Nice ambiance with two comfy sofas in the back where the big screen is. They were serving breakfast which was fine but nothing fantastic. Plus was that they were serving beer so you could have a Guiness with your Irish breakfast. ; )

A nice crowd but not too crowded. I heard folks started lining up at O'Brien's at 4:30 this morning. I was going to go there but now I'm glad I didn't.

Food trucks in SD...where are they?

Anyone know what has happened to the El Jefecito truck? I went this past Saturday and it wasn't there but I figured it may have been because of the holiday weekend. Then I went by today and both it and the Sneak-A-Peak coffee truck were nowhere to be seen.

And I was so hungry...

Dang, I wish I had read this board much sooner, just so I could have eaten at the Miramar location. I went by this past Saturday and it was closed (obviously) with no sign on the door about a move/closing/etc. I fear I may have missed out on a gem of a restaurant. Will try the new Ichiro though.

Mitsuwa Food Fair, Thu 05/27 - Sun 05/30

Hopefully Kukuru will be there throughout the weekend. The fair (separate register from Kukuru's) also had all kinds of kamaboko (I really liked the spicy cod roe) and a potato apple pie. Yeah, I had never heard of it either so I had to buy one. Really yummy!

Bummer! I don't blame you Captain. Sorry about the "misinformation" but I swear that's what he told me last night. Maybe it was every day except Tuesday? My hearing ain't what it used to be.

Food trucks in SD...where are they?

Finally went to check out Jefecito this evening for a snack (it was around 9:30pm) and had two tacos: buche and lengua. Served with a grilled yellow pepper, the tacos were great. The meats were tender and moist and the buche was nice and flavorful. Tacos were $1.50 each and I also was offered the cup of frijoles. I asked what time they open and they said that they're there every day from 11am to 11pm.

I can't wait to go back!

La Jolla - Kid Friendly and Good Food

It's mainly contemporary California with that locally fresh/raised vibe. Their daily flatbread special is usually good. And the tagliatelle bolognese is fantastic. I thought the sweetbreads and bone marrow were just OK. Their charcuterie platter, the Cutting Board, is also worth trying. What is on it varies depending on what they've prepared recently. Service is also very good IMO. Reservations a must. Here's a sample menu that's on their website but the offerings were not exactly the same when I went a couple of weeks ago.

I've seen diners with their children at whisknladle. If your daughter is a squirmer you could ask for one of the tables in the corner of the restaurant. Or eat outdoors on the patio. Great for lunch/dinner.
