Grass fed Philly cheese steak

Tried this place, and the turkey sandwich was so dry I had to find another drink to try to wash it down. The bread was so dry, and the meat was too. YUCK!

Sad to say. I started out a fan, then got to be "meh" now ... won't let the dog eat here.

Glad there are other and better alternatives in the neighborhood. Maybe the next restaurant in this spot will be better.

Why is Yelp so wrong?

As a CH member, I have to say I prefer Yelp.

First, the format is a lot better. On CH, there are random postings but seems like no real organization to find an area and research the places there. Putting in my hometown of Manhattan Beach yields a lot of references of all types and tough to narrow and find things.

Yelp, you put in a city - you get the complete city. Next, put in sushi and you get sushi listings in that city. Just that easy. But Yelp then goes way beyond just food to other local flavors, etc. (which I also enjoy)

I enjoy eating out, and like to do research on places before I go spend (waste) money on them. A lot of newer restaurants constantly spring up, and people are actively seeking them out and postings.

As a road warrior (travel 70% of a month), I appreciate the ability to research local places. And then will also review the places I go. I see a lot of other roadwarriors that do the same thing.

Yes, it is a younger crowd and yes there is a type of community feel to it. But you can bypass those areas if you wish. I actually like some of the stuff they post and comment on. (sadly I am not a 20-something any longer ...)

Before CH, I used to like Zagat as well. But somehow their rating system was a bit too cryptic for my understanding. Then I found CH. But the interface, format and lack of search abilities was not to my liking (and driving me crazy), so I moved to Yelp.

Its a choice people ... and we do live in the Land of Freedom. And we all have choices here.

BBQ brisket

The Whole Foods in Manhattan Beach has a smokehouse right in the store, and smoke all kinds of meats (and will do free tastings as well). The brisket is amazing, and they trim away all the fat as well. I also recommend asking for a container of their BBQ sauce.

Will need to bring your own butcher paper.

The Best Burger in LA is at Trader Joe's!

Thanks for the tip!!

Fat Face Fenners Fishack

One of the best burgers I have had in LA.

While not "in LA", I have to say that Omaha Steaks' burgers are fantastic. I ordered a sampler of steaks, and there were burgers in there as well. Was pleasantly surprised by the quality.

Best $25 Steak dinner?

The Bull Pen is an "old style", table clothed, steakhouse on the "curve" in Redondo Beach. Reservations are a good idea, but there is a great bar there to wait as well. Classic great service and great steaks.

Where are the Spices in L.A.?

Penzey's has an excellent selection of spices, and you can purchase bottles and then bags to refill them later.

Glacier Ice Cream/Gelato in Manhattan Beach

I have to agree that Glacier Ice Cream in Manhattan Beach is fantastic!! My wife and I went today, and tasted a bunch of things before we got the ice cream. Extremely creamy and very tasty. One of the best ice creams I have ever had.

Dav, they now have "free filtered ice water" in a nice bottle/dispenser on the table with the napkins, etc. (I agree, have to have water ... and it is now there)

Talked to the owner, and he admitted that they are working out the operational kinks now, and seems willing to accept comments.

The Velhrona Chocolate Sorbet looked amazing. I am going for the gelato next time ...

Chef Hannes - June 23, 2007

Finally got to dinner at Chef Hannes in El Segundo. (

It is a smaller restaurant, tables with white table clothes, and great service.

We had the Chicken Toscana with Broccoli, and a special of Seared Scallops. Both were excellent!!!

Too, we took a bottle of wine and there was a $15 corkage, but that seems to be more typical as of late.

I highly recommend this place!!

Favourite Cheeseburger in LA

Fat Face Fenner's Fishack in Hermosa Beach. In the middle of Pier Street promonade, on the north side - second floor. There is a standard cheeseburger on the menu, with the ability to order other fixings (thousand island dressing, quacamole, etc.)

Messy but great.

Too, the view from the outside deck is amazing.

"Dean & Deluca" of South Bay?

Corkscrew Cafe is a new comer in Manhattan Beach, on the NW corner of Highland Ave and Marine Street. (used to be Mac's Liquor)

Another great place is North End Caffe in Manhattan Beach on the SW corner of Highland Ave at 35th Street. They serve excellent sandwiches made with Boar's Head meats.

As for a local butcher, Manhattan Meats on Manhattan Ave is fantastic. Located just south of Manhattan Beach Blvd has a great meat counter.

Lido Bakery on Sepulveda across from the Manhattan Village makes unbelievable cakes with decorations that are truly spectacular.

Becker's Bakery is near Manhattan Meats has a great sandwich counter.

Jerry's Deli would be the closest to a Jewish Deli but that is in Marina Del Rey.

Brunch in Ann Arbor?

Coming in to visit the relatives, and looking for a great brunch in the Ann Arbor area. The family has gone to the Gandy Dancer one too many times, and looking for somewhere new to go.

Thanks in advance.

South Bay: Private Party, 100 people??

Depending on the time of the year, The Lakes at El Segundo is a great spot and you can have it outdoors/indoors. ( The Lakes is an executive golf course (9 holes), and has a private room and also large patio that is next to a large pond. It is right off the 9th green. Had my wife's birthday party there and was great. Too, there is no problem having a band outdoors as it is across from Chevron Refinery and next to Raytheon El Segundo.

Awesome/affordable mexican food near LAX?

For the margaritas, go with something above the basic one. The Dirty Maggie is a top shelf cadillac version.
Food there has a lot of combinations and special dishes above basic tacos and such.
Construction on Rosecrans is east of Sepulveda. Should not affect coming from airport if you take Sepulveda from Century Blvd.

Any really good places to eat near LAX?

Second City Bistro - I concur. Tuesday nights are the wine tasting nights. Good to get a table while the tasting is going on and order. Then go into the back and participate in the tastings while the food is being prepared.

Hermosa Beach with out-of-towners

Fritto Misto - Great food, and you can improvise on the combination of pasta, sauces, etc. Too you can carry bring wine. (very casual)

Jackson Bistro - Great location across from Fire Station. Great food, and there is a corkage fee (but not that much).

Buono Vita (Italian) On the north side of the street on Pier Ave in the same block as Jackson Bistro.

Little Italy Kitchen (Italian) - SE corner of Pier and Hermosa Ave. Great food.

Rajun Cajun - NOLA cajun food, by a family from NOLA. Authentic cajun, and a great atmosphere (very casual).

Hope this helps.
