Terakawa Ramen

Me and a few of the eG guys are due a visit here soon, thanks for the preview. It's all about the tare, isn't it, so I'll see about toppings and such myself when I go -

I know Ippudo had their ace man and mgt team in town when they got here - was that also the case with Setagaya? It seemed like they left it to their NY franchisers pretty quickly.

authentic japanese restaurants

You're right, and that's messed up because I actually had dinner with the owners. That said, Nagasaki is as about as far west as you'll go without going to okinawa, and she served me a goya champuru while I was there, and this was 5 years ago

authentic japanese restaurants

Soba Koh and Sobaya are very good, but I'd suggest going to Soba Totto for a more well-rounded restaurant and menu, the stellar service you get with Mr. M's restaurant, great soba with bite, freshmade every day (AFAIK) as well as a shochu-bar up front. They are of course sisters with AK, Yakitori Totto and Torys -
I actually had a very good curry at Hiromi's Place in Soho which is much like the home-style restaurants you will find in Japan vs. Go-Go which is a chain in Japan and yes close to places like CocoIchiban.
UminoIe should be highlighted as somewhere to get authentic Okinawan cuisine now that Suiba has closed. I haven't been there in a few years but it was always very good when I went and the owners very kind.
I'm glad to see theatrical clip joints like Inakaya and Ninja off the list.
I never have seen either Ariyoshi as something better than a decent izakaya that was subject to the same cabal of Manhattan suppliers that a lo of this list is - that's why the Sunnyside location seemed to be better...
I don't see Kamui Den on here but I'm certain it's gotten play on here as I no doubt see CHers there every time I go. That said, there are about 5 dishes on his menu that are executed reliably well, including his ribeye and jidori.
Saburi is the last I'll write about here - the only wafu-chuuka you will find in the city, and my favorite Hiyashi Chuuka in the city, just in time for the summer.

Best Wings In NYC?

I didn't know Scruffy's closed, but you can get those EXACT wings at Lansdowne Road at 44th and 10th. Same owners, they even list it on the menu as the "famous Scruffy Duffy wings"

ISO Quick & Cheap Lunch near 42nd & 6th Ave

I'm surprised, not a single recommendation for Cafe Zaiya and Chiyoda Sushi -

You definitely want to get lunch takeout from Cafe Ziya - japanese standards, changes every day

Raku, Japanese on W. 76th St. Anybody been?

I'm pretty sure it's not Japanese, which is funny because their motto is "it's Japanese!"

Wine bar recs

If UWS or UES, Pudding Stones is great

Need Sushi recs. in Murry Hill area...

Manabe-san

Sushi, no, sashimi and sashimi appetizers, yes, I've had many times. From what I called I had a whole platter of sashimi the last time I was there.

Need Sushi recs. in Murry Hill area...

Responding to scrantonian in the context of Murray Hill, which is pretty much dead when it comes to jp food. For the OP, what do you think about Mishima since they renovated a few years ago?
And because there's so MUCH just north of 42nd, yes I was curious, as only a Japanese national from out of town might not know that, and not for long...

Need Sushi recs. in Murry Hill area...

and did you mean Torys?

Need Sushi recs. in Murry Hill area...

Ummm.. that's what you get for following Japanese recommendations on here....

One reliable neighborhood place in Murray Hill is Mishima at 30th and lex

If you're wife is japanese, however, I'm not sure why she hasn't convinced you to walk up the hill a little..... there's FANTASTIC Japanese to be had at Tsukushi, very much a neighborhood secret to the Japanese, and of course Yasuda's lunch, which is cheaper than what you paid at Sen-in. And what's the deal with your change?

Tasty, affordable non-sushi Japanese

Aburiya Kinnosuke, 45th and 3rd

Fun, hip sushi place

Matsuri is probably the best you can do food and scene-wise. Enjoy!

South Beach/Downtown Recommendations for a NYer

Hi hounds
I'm arriving tomorrow for a few days in Miami - my home is NYC Manhattan and second home Tokyo to a certain extent. So not really looking for Japanese recommendations (although if there is a super-authentic, robatayaki/izakaya type, or Japanese regional food, I would be interested in that). Also not looking for places that would not beat out NYC, unless it's something local and great that in NYC costs astronomically more. Don't really need Japanese, Korean, Indian, PIzza, Burger, kosher reccs, but those still apply based on the previous sentence.

Really looking for the local awesomeness, even if it's totally below and/or off the radar. Think, recomendations for someone who in NY likes Perry St., The Modern, Yakitori Totto, Aburiya Kinnosuke, Sushi Yasuda, Sriphrapai, Madangsui, Corner Bistro, Tulcingo Del Valle, Hell's Kitchen, Ushiwakamaru, Katz's, Grimaldi's, etc., but will eat damn near anything.

Don't really need the large quotient of the South Beach dining scene that closely replicates Chelsea in NY

Would be nice to keep my budget around up to 25 for lunch and 50 or 60 for dinner but cheap eat recommendations will certainly free up budget for more expensive dinners.

I'm staying at the Standard, work during the day will be around SW 75th Street, (or is it NW 75th street?) which makes both downtown and south beach equally convenient and inconvenient for me.

Any and all help will be kindly reciprocated when you get your collective sunny asses to the big apple!

Pizza for the lactose intolerant?

Go to Luzzo's. As I found out, there's hardly any cheese on it. It's like they sliced up one of those little buffalo mozz. balls. that's all.

Date - Chelsea Piers Vicinity: Drinks+Snack

Wine @ Cookshop

Looking for Korean fried chicken and tofu dishes

I would go to BBQ Chicken & Beer @ 24th and 7th for KFC and Seoul Garden for tofu. That's the best of the 2

Which steakhouse of these three would you go to?

wolfgang's

Londoner's first pastrami sandwich at Katz's

lean????

Sushi in the City

if this is a Sex in the City reference, the sushi you want is "Sushisamba", there are a few locations

tea at Jewel Bako

Yeah, JB sucks so hard that the tea probably WAS the highlight. You had genmaicha, you can get good ones at any of the Sunrise, JAS marts, any Japanese mart. They have it at Chinese and Korean groceries too but usually not the good stuff

Help! Good bar for meetup group near Penn Station?

Molly Wee, Seven, Mustang Sally

Where can I buy UNpasteurized yogurt in NYC?

International Grocery 39th and 9th

Sushi in Midtown

Welcome - besides Hatsuhana and Sushiden, don't go to any of the other places mentioned.

Yasuda can in fact be affordable, it's just a matter of ordering. For instance, their $34 Sushi matsu gets you 12 pieces and 2 rolls.

Where to take a sushi snob?

That he spent 2 weeks in Tokyo does not mean that he necessarily had good sushi there. But average sushi and sashimi there is as good as the better places here. To an earlier poster, most fish is flash frozen in Japan too, i.e. the tuna and salmon. I would not go to 15 east or Soto, here he'd probably scoff that he can get the same for much less in Japan. Rather I'd go to Yasuda, Ushi Wakamaru or Shimizu

HELP! Recommendations needed for 20, early evening, in Manhattan

I had a similar situation, Il Bastardo worked great for it

Korean BBQ /Shabu/ REALLY GOOD Chinese-- Midtown or close for a culturally mixed group with kids

Those 2 Japanese families would probably love to get some authentic Japanese food if they're coming all the way to NY - but maybe they don't need to go out for nabe or shabu-shabu, as they probably have a nabe set at home... if they did, I haven't been to Naniwa in years, is it still ok? I know someone there got in some trouble trying to bribe an inspector... Shaburi is a good recc as would be Shabu Tatsu and Shabu 70. For Korean food, I would forego anything except Gah Mee Ohk or Kunjip (for chigae) on 32nd and go to Woo Chon on 35th. FWIW Woo Chon is favorie of Hideki Matsui, as is Bali Nusa Indonesian up 9th ave, so his name and number are plastered all over.

Problem you might have is a lot of Japanese places are traditionally closed Mondays. At the end of the day, I would do this dinner at Aburiya Kinnosuke, Totto or Soba Totto, they're simply cooking Japanese food on a higher and more authentic level than most anywhere else, they all have private rooms that can take that many people and it doesn't need to be expensive as that's all a matter of ordering. If yakitori, kids love food on skewers.

Any hidden gems near west 46th/9th?

Agreed! Also I'd add Tulcingo del Valle, Queen of Sheba, Wondee Siam II, all budget greats in the area

Any hidden gems near west 46th/9th?

you can't get much better a dining destination than hell's kitchen. $20pp? Hit the Yoshinoya at 42nd and 8th, and get a 40oz to go with it
