Spanish cooking chorizo in St. Pete area

As recent as 2 months ago I bought some at Borenquen Market on Columbus Ave Tampa, just 2 or 3 blocks east of Himes Avenue on the south side of the street. It was fresh chorizo but in a casing and in the meat department.

They also have the dried packaged variety so you have to go to the meat counter for what you're after.

Oregano on the stem in Tampa

Tampa's now defunct Castellano and Pizzo used to carry dried on the stem oregano....I recall it was a Greek oregano. I'm making Cuban roast pork for Easter dinner and would like to know if anyone knows where in Tampa I can buy some....

Thank you!

Trang Viet Cuisine decline? (Tampa)

When Andy turned me on to this restaurant a couple of years ago I thought it was the best Vietnamese food I'd ever had (best Asian for that matter) so I'm sorry to hear it's possibly in a slide. Have been back several times but not for a while. So....if not Trang, what's the next best?

Tarpon Springs Greek?

There wil be more current opinions than mine since haven't been for a couple of years, but back when I did go Mikinos seems to be consistently good.

If you do a search on this forum you will turn up many suggestions. Best of good fortune...

BJ's Alabama BBQ, South Mabry, Tampa, other recs, too?

I see that the SmokeShack is just down the street and I didn't even know it was there. Looks like they set up in the lot at Garden of Etin. I'll give it a try and report back.

Recommend me a seafood restaurant in the Tampa/St. Pete area

After seeing the movie Lincoln yesterday we headed over to Mid-Peninsular Seafood on 49th St in Gulfport for dinner and we weren't disappointed. We each had a combo of fried grouper and shrimp in a basket with hush puppies and cole slaw and everything was very, very good. The grouper and shrimp were fresh and the breading didn't overwhelm the taste of the fish and shrimp. The staff was warm and friendly and the decor is decidedly old Florida. Nothing fancy or upscale here....just good food in a comfortable atmosphere.

St. Pete on a Tuesday night

Two of us are going to a Rays game for several innings and then we want to eat after leaving. What is good, moderately priced, and easily accessible to downtown St Pete at 10 o'clock on a weeknight? Thank you!

question about Arco Iris

Although the food seems to be just a tad better at the Columbus restaurant (at least in my opinion), Arco Iris has another location on Tampa Bay Blvd that is a little more modern and since you mentioned decent bathrooms, may be more to your liking. The location is east of Habana on the north side of TBBlvd.

Del Rio's Cafe

I've been going to Del Rio's for a few months and frankly, I didn't post here because I selfishly didn't want to get there and not be able to get a table. It's definitely cozy and quaint, and both Dave and Jorge are Tampa natives with a lot of cool stories to tell. They also know their craft and serve up some yummy food.

Chalet Suzanne

Back in the '70's I would lift off from Peter O' Knight in Tampa and fly in to the Chalet's airstrip (it was grass and kind of short in those years) to have lunch before going on to our next destination. The food never seemed impressive but it was always tidy and clean. Sorry to learn that it's in it's current condition these days because the uniqueness of the place was it's biggest asset..

Columbia (Sarasota)--criticism?

I visited the Ybor Columbia again recently and agree with Andy Huse that it is vastly improved in it's quality of food over the dishes they served in the not so distant past. Having first visited the restaurant in the early 50's with my parents, I still get a warm feeling walking through the door....it simply drips with historical mojo (OK, maybe the server dripped some mojo on the floor.....it still has lots of mojo)! The 1905 Salad is my perennial favorite.

Montauro Ristorante in Tampa

Yes Andy....Crab Chilau is what we used to know it as. Based on Dr Todd's review I'm going to go there the very next available Friday to give it a try.

Montauro Ristorante in Tampa

Anyone heard of, or eaten at, the Montauro Ristorante? I think it's somewhere in the West Tampa area and a while back I visited their website (may have been a Facebook page......don't recall) - they brag about their pasta with crab sauce and other dishes.....I'm always interested in local, independent Italian places.

Less Cuban bread, higher prices at Alessi's (Tampa)

I wasn't crazy about their bread (Alessi's) even before it was downsized.....I think it requires the right ovens and baking process to turn out a good loaf, and for me, places like La Segunda and Faedo's are the places to get them. Andy you had me drooling on my keyboard when you related your hot loaf with butter experience - been there and done that more than once......it's close to nirvana!

Kudos to Andy Huse

I was fortunate to share lunch with Andy at the Columbia last week when the Times was doing the photo shoot for Wednesday's article. Best of all was that Andy had an advance copy of the book and I had a few minutes to look it over - it's beautiful!!! The pages are loaded with photographs that will bring back many memories to those that have been here long enough to remember the Columbia in past years......and I can't wait to get a copy home so I can read more about the restaurant's storied past. I highly recommend it to any and all of you foodies!

Castellano and Pizzo's cracked green olive salad

Does anybody know the recipe for Castellano and Pizzo's (Tampa) cracked green olive salad? I'm addicted to it and can't get enough.......

The visable ingredients are the olives, garlic, purple onion, garlic, olive oil -- and then it's a guess from there for me.......

Tony Casanapoli

Tony Casa Napoli's was where I had one of the most memorable meals of my life! That was (if memory serves) back in the late 80's and I recall a family style seating arrangement with all of the dishes dripping with garlicy goodness.......if I learned that they've reopened I'd make a drive from Tampa to have a taste.

Tampa - who sells the best Italian Sausage??

Once again, thanks for the fine suggestions. The latest one - Mazzaro's in St Pete - is enticing since I've never been. I've read on more than one posting that they have exceptional Italian specialties so I'm going to give them a try......Italian sausage is at the top of my list for my visit and I'll report back about it.

Tampa - who sells the best Italian Sausage??

I've recently made friends with another Tampa native with roots in Ybor City and we have been trading notes on local dishes. The subject of Italian sausage came up and she asked me if I had a source for quality sausage.

Unfortunately I have been only moderately happy with sausage I've bought at Castellano and Pizzo, as well as at Cacciatore's on Armenia. In my opinion both establishments sell a good product but neither is as exceptionally good as we remember from earlier days.

Anyone know where to get a better sausage in Tampa?

Thanks!

Tony

Do you know for sure if they're open for lunch on Saturdays? I've emailed them about their hours (not on their website) but haven't heard back from them. Tony

Winter Haven.....2 hours for lunch

I'm going to be in Winter Haven on June 14th (a Saturday) for 2 hours and hope someone on this forum can tell me what's good for lunch......

First preference: Southern style home cookin'

Second: Bar-B-Que

A friend and I are taking the Amtrak from Tampa so of course we would want to go to a place within a reasonable walking distance of the train station.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions you can lend......
