Paula Deen's restaurant

That settles it! When I go to Georgia I am always in the Altanta area. There is plenty and I mean plenty of good food right there in Atlanta. Thanks to all for the info.

why cant americans make cheese ?

Those of you who were kind enough to offer suggestions deserve a standing ovation. To stevenjf, my suggestion is the next time you visit, bring your own cheese with you.

Did you get food gifts for Christmas?

I received chocolate; a lot of chocolate!

Fish question, Sand Dab or Dover sole? [moved from Los Angeles]

Yes, I had forgotten about the Rex sole. I haven't seen Rex sole in a long time. Aren't the Rex smaller than the others? I purchased Dover a few days ago, got a couple of nice pieces, each fish weighed just about a half pound.

Rice cookers--how do they know when to shut-off?

The howstuffworks site is the best. Thanks for posting the link.

Fish question, Sand Dab or Dover sole? [moved from Los Angeles]

Does anyone know if these fish are the same, but with different names? Are these fish from the local area? Also, does anyone know of fish markets that sell this fish? I usually buy it at Ralphs or Albertsons at $6.99 for a pound; I sure would like to find it cheaper! I have searched some of my local markets that sell fresh fish and they never have it.

Going to the Cerritos Center - Where to Eat?

Is Ten Ten still the name of that restaurant? I thought they changed owners/name a few years ago. I haven't eaten there in a while, but the food was excellent. Although everyone I knew, who'd been there agreed the help was rude, consistently rude.

The use of a meat thermometer?

Wow, I learned a lot just by asking about a thermometer! Actually, when I posted the question I was only thinking about a turkey, which I have never had a problem with. But, I have used the Reynolds cooking bag for years and that's what works for me. Each time I cook a turkey I get rave reviews. I never have a problem when cooking my poultry; it is so simple.
Now beef...that is a different story. It is something that I felt I just was not good at cooking. My aunt would cook london broil or a prime rib roast to perfection without a thermometer. I have ruined my fair share of roasts, so I just felt that I was not good with beef or I should say, large cuts of beef. My burgers are always perfect. With that said, I guess I will now invest in a good thermometer first and then a nice cut of rib eye.

Italian food? Pizza?

Hmmm, that does give me something to think about. However, I have lived in SoCal all of my life, going to the East usually once a year. I still feel that there are distinctive differences, especially the breads and cheeses.

The use of a meat thermometer?

But isn't it if your turkey is completely thawed, and you cook it the right amount of time, it will be done? I have never heard of jiggling the leg to test if the turkey is done. Now regarding the pound cake, that is a different story. Over the years, I have occasionally overcooked as well as undercooked them. But, based on some stories I have heard, even using a thermometer still fails some cooks. A person would have to have some cooking skills; it is not a magic tool.

The use of a meat thermometer?

Why is there (it seems all of a sudden) the necessity to use a meat thermometer? Growing up, my mom or any of the women in the family used it. I grew up learning how to cook and I am always know when the meat is done, so I feel I don't have a need for a thermometer. Is this tool for the novice? I don't mean to minimize the need for it, I'm just wondering.

Paula Deen's restaurant

I'm wondering if her restaurant is worth the drive from Atlanta. Although much less than healthy, her food on the show sure looks mighty good.

Italian food? Pizza?

Does anyone know of any good, authentic Italian food in the LA area? As soon as my plane hits the ground in Philly, I start mapping out my food plan. Will it be a meatball sandwich first, or a hoagie, pizza, or ravioli......!

Coley's in NOHO, a real disapointment!

This is not the first time I have heard a bad review of Coley's. My sister started eating there years ago, maybe as much as ten years ago. At that time there was only one Coley's, and even her Jamaican friend agreed that the food was awesome. This reminds of how M&M's restaurants changed after adding more locations. The food went downhill.

ALBER'S CORNMEAL

My sister just told me this morning about the recall of the Albers products. About a month or so ago I was looking for grits, but the shelves were empty at two different stores. I now wonder if all staff are informed of recalls. One nice young man even went to the back to look for the grits said they were out of them. I found the Quaker grits at Walmart and they are just as good. I know that there is always a risk of infestation in dry goods, so for years I have stored them in a container in the 'fridge. I try not to think of how many pests I must have eaten over the years.
