Chow-worthy, dog friendly, cheapish around Laguna Beach?

There are tons of restaurant that have outdoor seating and would probably allow dogs. I would go down there and walk around, enjoy the day, and see what you come across.
Taco Loco is VERY casual (and small), with non-fish & vegetarian items such as the blackened mushroom & tofu taco on blue corn tortilla with yummy salsas & guacamole.

It looks like http://www.madisonsquare.com/index.shtml allows dogs.

Here's a list but I would call and check first unless you can be flexible once there.

Announcement: New Board Breakdown for Chowhound

I see the other California Board issues were not addressed. That's great San Diego finally has it's own board.

California is so big with so many urban areas it REALLY needs to be broken down into 3 main boards:
NORTHERN CALIFORNIA
CENTRAL CALIFORNIA
SOUTHERN CALIFORINA

with existing sub-boards for San Francisco, San Diego, & Los Angeles

The Los Angeles board currently includes: "LA, Orange and Ventura Counties and Southwestern San Bernardino County"

It is ridiculous not to include Riverside county, it borders on Orange County and is closer and more relevant than far flung areas of LA, Ventura, & OC counties.
I see they added part of SB county as some cities border on LA County and members vocalized this. I hope the rest of California will soon have the logical and necessary changes made to it.

Where would you go for Dim Sum on New Years Day?

I'd like to hear where people would suggest going for Dim Sum for New Years Day. A place that has XLB, and steamed buns with the duck would be a plus but not mandatory.

Thank you

Food events / ethnic festivals this weekend in LA / OC ?

I am wondering if there are any cultural / ethnic food festivals or events this weekend in LA, OC, SoCal in general?

I have looking online and nothing exciting is coming up.
Garden Grove Strawberry Festival (yawn)
ScotsFest in Costa Mesa (maybe)

I am really more in the mood for something asian, latin or more interesting.
Any info is appreciated : )

Hot Cross Buns in LA?

I found some at Henry's (Wild Oats in LA) they were ok.. but wheat, so not what I expected. Finding an old fashioned bakery to make them fresh is the best. We used to have one here that made them with a stripe of white and rasberry icing, so good!

O.C. Legs of Lamb & Ham, where are you buying your Easter meats.

I am looking for input on where people in Orange County are going to buy their Easter Hams and Leg of Lamb.

What brands and types do you prefer from our Orange County stores.

I am thinking about getting a small cut of both for the Easter meal.

Not so much the high end stuff, that is a bit much in this economy and not always conveniently available
But more mid-range items that can be found at grocery stores in most Southern California (OC & LA) areas.

Lately, I have not been impressed with the spiral cut glazed hams.

I thought it would be interesting to hear where and what other people are buying for their Easter main dish.

Looking for a "Ed Debevic's" type Restaurant....

It's not a 50's diner at all but Bobby McGee's in Brea has 'zany waiters' that are dressed up and sing and joke around. The food is.. passable, not a place to go for 'incredible food'.
There is a nightclub also if you want to do that afterward.

It's a very kid friendly restaurant, the place we all wanted to go when I was like.. 10 lol : | But it may fit the bill. I went a few years ago for a friend's going away party and had fun.

p.s. I wish ed debevic's was still around also. you don't need to be THAT old to remember it lol

Street Food Wedding!

sounds fun and yummy. for drinks perhaps jugs of aguas frescas, they are cheap and easy to make yourself. you could have bottles of alcohol on the side if people want to add that in if you're looking for alcoholic drinks as well. you could have fun with it and have little umbrellas and garnishes.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/42323675@N00/2748323900/

for munchies if this is an daytime ourdoor wedding, cups of cut up fruit mexican style with cucumber, jimaca, lime wedges, and spicy salt, with toothpicks. perfect refreshing snack for people to eat while standing. oh maybe small fruit kabobs with a lime and salting area.
chips and salsa, guacamole. since you're doing korean bbq maybe small egg rolls, wontons or taquitos, little spicy sausage or slices with picks.
KOGI does taro and lotus chips http://kogibbq.com/wp-content/uploads/alibi-1.jpg
maybe you can find your own.
if you like fish some poke http://www.overlandmeatco.com/fresh_f...
or ceviche with the chips would be yummy. ceviche is easy to make, you may be able to get poke at an asian market.

good luck

Mariscos Chente, the king of Mexican sashimi reopens on the Westside w/pics

I read this thread a few weeks ago, thanks sgla. Last week I was in LA with a friend driving down Imperial Hwy (I think). Suddenly, I saw a Mariscos Chente sign and yelled out that we must go there! We walked inside and decided to sit on the patio. There were several vacant tables covered with empty soup bowls and Corona bottles. We looked at the menu and decided on ceviche de cameron as we just wanted a snack.
My friend ordered a Corona and they were out (previous diners must have consumed them all as evidenced on the empty tables lol). She settled for a can of Modelo. The chips were great and strong green salsa. The ceviche was good. While we were eating our waitress brought us out a complimentary plate of cameron de pimiento. Another friendly woman that spoke english came by to see if we were enjoying the dish. She seemed to be the one cooking when we left.
The cameron pimiento was ok, a bit oily and the fish did not taste super fresh. BUT is was extremely nice of them to bring us this dish on the house and we left a generous tip to show our appreciation. I had a feeling this might not be the place sgla raved about, it was good but not as spectacular as had been described. When I was able to go online I found the location I read about was in Mar Vista!!

Is the one I visited owned by the same people? There was a good sized patio out back with a duplex apartment.

I found it amusing I was at the wrong location but was brought a complimentary item... you never know what can happen! :)

Pageant of the Masters.. dinner before?

Laguna Beach also has a free summer shuttle that goes up and down the coast. If you got there early enough and parked in the canyon you could take the trolley to places too far to walk.

HELP! Red Beans and Rice - Kidney Beans or Red Beans??

Hello,

ok I thought I found a great recipe that calls for using dry kidney beans for red beans and rice.

http://www.gumbopages.com/food/red-be...

but using dry kidney beans rather the regular dry red beans which are smaller. sounded odd to me and most other recipes seems to call for red beans.

I am not experienced in cooking this type of food. For those of you that are, take a look at the recipe and let me know.. will kidney beans be ok?

Thank You

Creole / Cajun market in OC, IE, LA? (need crawfish meat too)

Thank you.
That french's bakery looks great. Looks like I can get crawfish meat at a Stater Bros near me (on Border Ave. in Corona) They are ordering it. Some say they can't get it, some can. One said they had it - called Langostinos which I understand to be different than crawfish. I'm a novice here, throwing my first mardi gras party and learning as I go and having fun!
I am ordering stuff online too.
Do the mexican bakeries make king cakes, do they taste the same?
