Special Indian or Thai dinner downtown?

I am coming to Seattle for a business meeting at the W Hotel and want to find a nice Indian or Thai restaurant within walking distance for after with a friend. I am on a rather modest budge and hoping for fifty dollars or so for both of us with a glass ow wine each. Any suggestions? I like Thai and Indian cuisines because they are savory and spicey with lots of non meat options...but open to other options...

Foodie from LA in Baltimore

Its only for one dinner but, I wanted to eat something different and cheap and maybe see an interesting part of Baltimore at the same time. I'm not actually "from LA" just living there right now, and I've been eating a lot of delicious Mexican, Korean, Japanese & Persian food. I've never been to Baltimore and I'm gonna be there alone but I'll have my tomtom so pretty sure I'll be able to get around. I'd appreciate any ideas. I'm a relatively adventurous diner and spicy is great for me.

Bicycle & Skirball & West LA

Monte Alban is a great idea and if it gets late I can pack the bike on a bus down santa monica blvd. I've seen that the black mole seems pretty popular at Monte Alban? I wasn't a huge fan of mole cause..it tastes kind of heavy and thick but...I gotta say...my experience is extremely limited.

Bicycle & Skirball & West LA

I am going to Bob Dylan exhbit at Skirball which, from my map, looks like it is pretty freaking far out on Sepulveda. Then come back to West Los Angeles to see what its like, and maybe cool off at a film in the Majestic Crest and home to Santa Monica. Looks like a nice circle tour, but, should I plan eating near Majestic and is there something cheap and interesting I should try?

Bicycle + Leimert from Union Station

Monku, belated thanks, I wasn't able to do the trip until last week...but thanks to your advice I routed myself to cycle down Crenshaw so I was able to grab some ribs from Phillips then continue on to the park and eat them with lots going on around me. Its the only time I've had that kind of bbq (i.e. actually smoked) and didn't expect it to be so delicious and tender. The live music afterwards at Dicks made me hang out so lon that I was able to get hungry enough again for a plate of red beans and rice just before heading back. What a great Sunday.

Bicycle + Leimert from Union Station

For a sunday excursion I wanted to start at Union Station (which I can gt to from Santa Monica on the freeway blue bus) and then bicycle over to Leimert. I think if I get there I want to try Phillips BBQ and just hang out and listen to music. Any other ideas and also, any recommendations for things I should see on the way? (or indeed what route might be good or not so good).

bicycle + koreatown from santa monica

Thank you very much for suggestions. I regret to say that I decided to take the Santa Monica Blue Bus to Union Station and cycle around broadway checking the old theateres and THEN over to Koreatown for a meal and cycle home. I happened to stop in Grand Central Markt, I happened to taste my first ever Taco Al Pastor, and I had to keep ordering, it was just so good it was unbelievable. Eventually I continued to Koreatown but not possible to eat again after that. Wow.

Anyhow I am going to try again next weekend to do the original plan.

bicycle + koreatown from santa monica

OK this is going to be a great day, I'll check out the spa, thanks very much.

Have you met your S.O. through Chowhound?

We have PROFILES? I didn't know. But I don't see where I could put my email address. Just a blog address.

Have you met your S.O. through Chowhound?

So, in fact, I can't just say "hey want to try the restaurant out with me??" I made a post yesterday asking for advice on Koreatown because I was going to try to cycle there from Santa Monica (no car). Someone replied that they've done it a few times, and gave both a restaurant AND a route. Now, that was a flash in the dark. NO ONE cycles very much here AND this man/woman likes Korean food as well aacck...I really can't suggest we try it together?? Why is chowhound so strict about that??

bicycle + koreatown from santa monica

Servorg, brilliant THANK YOU. If you are biking from Santa Monica out, are there any other foodie routes you like to take? Cycling and food go so well together.....I would really appreciate any ideas.

Example, there's a bike path along Ballona Creek...any idea where it finally ends or food detours along the way?

Have you met your S.O. through Chowhound?

Just curious, how WOULD you meet anyone on Chowhound? I moved to LA a while ago and everyone on the board there seems great, its just, I can't figure out how I would suggest meeting up to explore some restaurants together. I'm finding the whole LA thing pretty lonely so any ideas welcome.

bicycle + koreatown from santa monica

I'm on a bike this weekend, and determined to try some of LA's renowned Korean food. I've looked through the posts and Shigol Ssam Bap (also known as Si Gol) sounds great. I'm not really a beef/pork person but all the leaves seem interesting. Is there anything I should check out along the way? I'm thinking of going up Santa Monica Boulevard and then cutting over on Melrose or Beverley but, from a chowhound perspective, are there streets or neighbourhood that I should not miss? This would be a day long kind of thing.

Hollywood + Convertible + 4 hours

OK thanks. Here's what I think I'll do. I pick up the opera ticket at Arc Light on Sunset Boulevard. Then park somewhere and walk to Jitlada for a bite to eat. Then maybe if there is time I will back on freeway towards the historic Olvera and get a coffee. And I then I'll be close to opera house and maybe even stroll over. Or metro over. I appreciate all the advice, I've copied it for another trip because the same guy has tickets to Tosca in a month...

Hollywood + Convertible + 4 hours

Olympic and ? Is it in Hollywood? The strange thing is how long it seems to take to get anywhere in LA. I'm guessing I could find Koreatown, for example, but not sure if its twenty minutes from Hollywood... or an hour and twenty minutes.

Hollywood + Convertible + 4 hours

My friend loaned me his car again, and I scored an opera ticket from craigslist, so tomorrow is already looking good but here is the thing. I live in Santa Monica, I need to pick up the ticket in Hollywood at 3:00 pm, then the opera is at 7:30. I'd like to eat something delicious in between, and I have no idea whats actually in between, I just have zero driving experience in LA except going up PCH a couple weeks ago. Ideas for a restaurant with something really spicy and delicious and interesting (and cheap), I'd love to walk around a bit as well.

Santa Monica + Convertible + 5 hours

Hey, I just went back to this post to jot down some information....and the "THANK YOU" I posted for all these suggestions seemed to have disappeared. Belatedly, thanks, I decided to go to Malibu Seafood and grabbed some fish tacos, and had a great great time.

Santa Monica + Convertible + 5 hours

Yikes. The sun sorta came out and I was just offered my friends convertible for the afternoon. I'm new here, and have been without automobile, and I was thinking of driving up PCH which seems like it will be a wonderful view. I want to head out at about 1:00 for a couple of hours each way. Is there anywhere I should stop on the way for (a) great restaurant or (b) great place to pick up some sea food to cook at home over the oscars. I know thats a pretty broad question, but, if you could only go on that highway once in your life, where or what would you eat? (me = spicey, savory, world food but realize thats probably not going to be on this roadside)

24 hours in Santa Monica what to eat?

I'm just here for a quick stay, I'm near Ashland and Main, and I don't have a car. Looking for interesting places to eat that I can walk/run/bus/or cab tonight and tomorrow. I lke spicy and ethnic food in particular, a Korean restaurant would be fantastic (although, something less on the bbq meat side because, although I eat meat, not so much). Also someone told me I can bus from Santa Monica to an old main street downtown with a row of huge boarded up movie theatres and a great fresh market with food stands for Mexican food. Old movie theatres and Mexican food sounds good too. Any ideas are welcome.

Looking for cheap eat in hayes valley but..

I can't eat bread, pizza, panini, etc (allergy)
I really like spicy savory food.... and I'm meeting someone for drinks at Hayes/Franklyn.
I'm already starving so want to walk to find dinner after. Ideas?

LAX? A nice meeting place?

YIKES it looks noisy (even the website is noisy without volume control). Something for a business meeting? Is there anything in Torrance?

LAX? A nice meeting place?

Okay, I've never been to LA, I'm arranging a meeting with some people from abroad, they're staying at the Days Inn at 5636 Hawthorne Blvd LA (near LAX). I'm pretty sure that Days Inn isn't going to provide great atmosphere, what are the chances that there is someplace light, stylish, california style and not far away? Hmm. Even as I type that it seems rather improbable. I think the international guests will need to take a taxi, the Americans will have a car. Thanks for any help.

Dinner Border of NorthBeach/Financial?

I am going tomorrow (thursday) evening to an event at Istituto Italiano di Cultura
425 Washington. The website says its near the Transamerica Building. Any recommendations for a restaurant nearby that is (1) relatively inexpensive and (2) likely to have some nice dishes for a no-flesh vegetarian. Thanks, I appreciate all the advice I get on this board, its been amazing!!

Restaurants near Kabuki Theater - Update?

Hi there,

I will be going to Kabuki for a couple of movies.
I wanted to know if you can recommend good restaurants that are (a) not too far and (b) not too expensive.

I checked a post/thread from couple of years ago, it recommended following. Any updates/comments welcome.

I would be going with group of about six people.

- Chez Nous, Fresca, Kui Shin Bo, Iroha, Mifune, "bridge" coffeehouse (no name)

Thanks very much!!

Second Question - pastry?

We went this morning, it was perfect, we had expresso, meringues and lemon tart. Wow. Thanks again for the suggestion.

First question - R&G Lounge - suggested menu?

Thank you !! We went last night, it was good fun, the crab was delicious, and the noisy bustling crowd was very satisfying somehow, it felt like a real event to my guests.

Second Question - pastry?

Oh yes!! thats a great idea!! in the mission right?? and I'll take her to mission delores afterwards

Second Question - pastry?

One of my out of town guests is a student from Iowa. She loves baking, she is hoping to become a pastry chef. She asked if we could go to Citizen Cake. I don't eat pastry, but my guess is, there are other places I could take her for a bite to eat at brunch or lunch tomorrow that would inspire her. Any ideas?
Thanks so much.

First question - R&G Lounge - suggested menu?

I have out of town guests, they would like to eat in Chinatown (and walk around and explore) and I have reservations tonight at 7:45.

Could you recommend some of the best dishes?
I read that they have great salt and pepper crab.
Can you recommend a couple of other dishes?

I appreciate all suggestions!!

Breakfast recommendation - Mission/Valencia streets

I have to meet a friend this morning, on Valencia Street around 21st.
Can you recommend an interesting place for breakfast within a few blocks of that area?
(would love to have some ideas for future as well).
