Looking for pan-fried perch ala Phil Smidt's
A friend says there is a place in Hyde Park that says "just like Phil Smidt's" right on the menu. No luck locating the place.
Rumor is the Probst brothers are looking for a new spot.
Looking for pan-fried perch ala Phil Smidt's
Up for Grabs on Calumet Ave in Whiting does a good job. That's about it. Perch is very pricy these days.
Italian bread search - "ciopa"
One must go to Rockford to get real Cioppi (sp?)
There ARE safety rules that prohibit making in large bakeries. They are hand crafted. When I was a kid we would go nuts for it.
Fenugreek seeds
Mail order from INDIANA BOTANIC GARDENS. They are on Ridge just east of I65. They also have a retail store there. Interesting place.
Great Jewish Deli?
Bergstein's is OK but they get their meat from Manny's, I believe.
Used to be a few good delis in HF area. Sadly most of the "Chosen People" have moved away.
Fressor's and I believe Al's were good.

GATTO'S without question. Perfect food served by the nicest folks in the area. They will keep you on budget and you will be very full when you leave.
With any luck Patrick will be behind the bar. He alone is worth the trip.
Restaurant Recommendations with Kids in Loop
Miller's Pub may be OK. Great Ribs lots of personality. Consider Greektown. Greek Islands/Parthenon/Roditys.
Harry Caray's on Navy Pier. Kids will love the place and you will get a top shelf piece of meat.

Impossible? Great mid-priced Italian
LaScarola is perfect place. Tufano's Vernon Park Tap or RoSals also would fit the bill. Some places on Western like Il Vicinato, Bruna's, Ignatz also fot the boll.
I am partial to Gatto's in Tinley Park

Small World Inn on E. 106th st and Mackinaw in the 10th Ward. They have full Serbian menu and a weekend buffet for $9.99. Most can get their money's worth in cevapci alone. Its an old corner bar with a back room...OUTSTANDING.

Best bloody mary?
Twisted Spoke at Grand/Ogden has their "Road Rash Bloody Mary". Complete with beer side car and loaded with meat and veggies.
Phil Smidt's substitutes?
UP FOR GRABS on Calumet Avenue. TEIBEL'S is an old standard as well. UFG has boned and buttered. Teibel's has frog legs as well. They also have broiled lake perch. Interesting and very good
Hammond, IN Near Horseshoe
Up for Grabs has great Lake Perch prepared boned and buttered. Also have excellent gourmet type burgers.
Kieth's in Whiting is open for dinner only on weekends. A real bright spot in NWI.
First time in Mokena, IL - help!
Chef Klaus on LaGrange, Gatto's on 80th Av. in TP is great.
Frankies in TP is good as is Ositeria Ottimo.
I am a new Uncle and I am headed to Midlothian, IL to meet my Nephew!
Go to Gatto's in Tinley for great Italian. Jack Gibbons Gardens is an old school steak joint, a few blocks due west of the Midlo border. House of Hughes is an old favorite on Cicero. Traverso's on Harlem in Orland Park is just west of Midlo as well. Cooper's Hawk is across from Traverso's.
Have to go a little bit west for decent chow.
Paella
Where are the best paella places in the Chicago Metro area? Help is appreciated.
Need good chow in Tinley Park
Go west on 183rd to 80th Ave. There you will find Gatto's. Great Italian food at surprisingly low prices. Chalkboard menu and friendly staff. See if Patrick is behind the bar. Fabulous chicken dishes and veal. Great pasta selection. Just like a joint on Taylor Street without the hassle of parking or getting ripped off for Valet.
pizza party for 100
Aurelio's in Homewood will do an excellent job. Home Run Inn is also capable and very good.
Replacement for Phil Smidt's Perch?
Rumors are old owners of Smidt's are looking at a location near the Cabela's complex.
Place was mobbed last few nights. Like people... no one sees you when you are sick, but everyone shows up when you're dead
