A friend says there is a place in Hyde Park that says "just like Phil Smidt's" right on the menu. No luck locating the place.

Looking for pan-fried perch ala Phil Smidt's

Up for Grabs on Calumet Ave in Whiting does a good job. That's about it. Perch is very pricy these days.

One must go to Rockford to get real Cioppi (sp?)
There ARE safety rules that prohibit making in large bakeries. They are hand crafted. When I was a kid we would go nuts for it.

Fenugreek seeds

Mail order from INDIANA BOTANIC GARDENS. They are on Ridge just east of I65. They also have a retail store there. Interesting place.

Great Jewish Deli?

Bergstein's is OK but they get their meat from Manny's, I believe.
Used to be a few good delis in HF area. Sadly most of the "Chosen People" have moved away.
Fressor's and I believe Al's were good.

GATTO'S without question. Perfect food served by the nicest folks in the area. They will keep you on budget and you will be very full when you leave.
With any luck Patrick will be behind the bar. He alone is worth the trip.

Restaurant Recommendations with Kids in Loop

Miller's Pub may be OK. Great Ribs lots of personality. Consider Greektown. Greek Islands/Parthenon/Roditys.
Harry Caray's on Navy Pier. Kids will love the place and you will get a top shelf piece of meat.

Go to Gatto's in Tinley for great Italian. Jack Gibbons Gardens is an old school steak joint, a few blocks due west of the Midlo border. House of Hughes is an old favorite on Cicero. Traverso's on Harlem in Orland Park is just west of Midlo as well. Cooper's Hawk is across from Traverso's.
Have to go a little bit west for decent chow.

Go west on 183rd to 80th Ave. There you will find Gatto's. Great Italian food at surprisingly low prices. Chalkboard menu and friendly staff. See if Patrick is behind the bar. Fabulous chicken dishes and veal. Great pasta selection. Just like a joint on Taylor Street without the hassle of parking or getting ripped off for Valet.

Rumors are old owners of Smidt's are looking at a location near the Cabela's complex.
