Some place fun, but not formal.

I have only one night in Portland with my 20 year old son this Friday from Boston, and would like to find a place with great food , but fun. I read up on PokPok, but it sounds like it is not worth the wait given how little time we have. Any recommendations in the Hawthorne neighborhoods, or maybe Alberta Street or Mississippi Street? Also, does anyone know of some great places if driving from La Grande, no route planned as of yet?

self guided food walks in paris

we are only going to be in Paris the late morning on October 8th and leaving the morning/afternoon of the 9th. we don't have much time, but would enjoy walking a couple of areas of Paris where we could mix markets with shopping and maybe something more cultural. i assume nothing is open on sundays, but was hoping for some ideas for saturday. sorry to be so vague, but really am open to anything. love the open markets, but se are only here for a very short time. any ideas?

Stéphane Reynaud Says: Make a Terrine

great recipes, very creative, but he has an affliction towards cooking half the recipes with plastic wrap...hence bleeding poisons into his food. strange that he did not make the effort to figure out another way to do it.

Are there other gems like Aburiya Kinnosuke out there? Even on the expensive side like Kaiseke (spelling?) places?

I like mostly traditional food, which is why I love Aburiya Kinnosuke. I want to try to find restaurants that are different from the myriad of sushi places.

Food gifts for Tokyo hosts

I know that this is a food site, but music jazz CD's are another good idea that take little or not room, travel well, and can be truly appreciated. The trick is to keep it small, preferably perishable, as apartments are very small.

Best all around Japanese in NYC?

There are two Toraya's. The tea room on the upper east side closed. The other Toraya is at 300 1/2 East 52nd Street. I have not been there in a few years, but it is a phenomenal very small restaurant. 212.838.4351 Check it out. No sushi served except maybe with a pre-ordained meal. They are always getting mixed up...maybe i mixed them up and this one closed and the other one is open.

In search of good sushi

The best sushi in New England is served at Sakurabana on Broad Street in downtown Boston. The restaurant is understated, and they don't get ridiculous in the menu. The fish is spectacular. The hamachi is the best I have ever had. Sakurabana maybe seats 40-50, and there is always a line for lunch if you get there anytime after 11:55. However, the restaurant at night is quiet as downtown is still mostly a lunch crowd. I have eaten at most of the places listed above, and no other place compares for quality of food.

12 nights in Shinjuku.

There is a small neighborhood of very traditional and very small restaurants a few blocks form all the strip joints. It is a couple of alleys. Many times westerners are not allowed, but there are a few ones you can go to. I don't remember where I heard of them, but it may have been in the book by Kennedy called somethign like 39 Little Adventures in Tokyo. Enjoy, and you want to see something wacky check out the kite museum.

Bitter stock

I am not sure how to fix it, but sometimes it occurs if you make teh stock with the liver and other innards that some separate with the bird. maybe add carrots, celerly water adn boil it down, maybe a pinch of sugar.
