Uptown lunch with out of town visitors?

Out of town friends are staying uptown, I'm looking for a nice place to take them to lunch. They suggested the boat house at Central Park--I see mixed reviews, and for the price I'm thinking there must be better (perhaps Bar Boulud?) I'd like something with nice food & atmosphere, but not too stuffy, I don't think they're particular "foodies" (and we've got 3 generations to satisfy) so would prefer not to spend crazy money for precious food. Suggestions appreciated!

Japanese Restaurants in Park Slope

out of those 24 "Japanese" restaurants, only 3 are truly Japanese: Taro Sushi, Gen & Geido. Maybe 4--I believe Naruto Ramen is authentic Japanese (I don't eat ramen. Even in Japan)

Restaurant Week!!

But all of those links are from previous years, and the participating restaurants change every time.

winter restaurant week

Wow, they have a $7000 bottle of wine. Think I'll go there!

Recommendations for East Village

Me too!

Any dairy-free "ice cream" in Brooklyn?

I know you can get ices and sorbets--Chocolate Room's chocolate sorbet is killer--but is there anyplace like Lula's on East 6th St. in Manhattan that makes delicious, creamy icy things out of nut/soy/coconut milk?

I just paid $4.25 for an iced coffee - what the...?

Bogus. Here's how ya do it:

It's gotta be cold-brewed. Otherwise just get a double espresso (hopefully NOT $4) and pour it over ice (might as well go into some deli & ask for a cup of ice). Think Coffee does cold-brewed, it's weak for my taste but decent. And interestingly not expensive. I do cold-brewing at home and the coffee-to-water ratio is much higher than regular brew, so if a shop is charging more for cold-brewed that's understandable. Still, $4 is highway robbery.

Best Gelato ANYWHERE - La Cremeria!

Do they have any dairy-free flavors?

Bar at the Modern--best dishes?

Thanks everyone! Everything was great. This was quite a splurge for us already (we're from Brooklyn after all) so we didn't order as much as some of you advised, but were very happy with what we did: the seared Foie, the egg in a jar (of course), lamb for me, and veal sweetbreads (a first!) for the hub. We did share, and it was all amazing--oh and a dark chocolate tart for dessert which was very possibly the best thing I've ever eaten! (I could say the same about the foie and the egg....)

We know something about wine but (so) we don't spend $100 on a bottle--I was very happy with the glass choices (that way we got to pair with each dish). Our waitress poured tastes of each wine before we committed to a glass, which I thought was lovely of her. The sommelier came out to discuss port after dinner, and gave a very generous pour. All in all, everything was impeccable and we enjoyed the evening very much!

Bar at the Modern--best dishes?

Thanks for that. I just looked at the prices on the wine list & almost cancelled the res!

Bar at the Modern--best dishes?

The Hub & I are going to the Bar at the Modern for our anniversary. We aren't stinking rich but we love good food & wine (which we don't believe has to be expensive). I've read alot about the BatM so we're excited to try it for our special occasion dinner. Would love some recommendations as to which dishes we should try (very intrigued by the egg in a jar thing). Also I noticed they have some reasonable wines on the menu, has anyone tried any of them?

Thanks Hounds.

Brooklyn Fare

"Japanese Red Snapper" is amadai. Or more correctly, Japanese for red snapper is amadai.

Best sushi in Brooklyn

Haven't been to Taro since they moved, so I won't comment on the current quality, but I have to disagree with you about Geido. Just because they hire Japanese waitresses doesn't make for a better restaurant. It is Japanese owned and run--as is Taro--but the service is abysmal. Japanese people can be rude, too, and the owner of Geido (and his staff) are. I order in Japanese, but it doesn't help since he'd rather stand behind the sushi bar schmoozing his regulars (who drink Cabernet with their sushi).

"Oro Verdi Gelati" The Best Gelati?

Lia's is nothing to write about--artificially colored & flavored frozen crap.

Esashi question

No idea--please let us know if you find out! There are only 3 good Japanese places in Brooklyn--Taku, Gen & Hibino, and he isn't at any of those.

Skate Wing

One thing no one has mentioned here is that skate is cheap. I've been buying skate from Blue Moon Fish (Greenmarket) for years--it's one of the cheapest fish they have. I remember going to restaurant week a few years ago and noticing the entree choices were chicken & skate. I've occasionally tried high-end Manhattan restaurants during RW and they almost always have skate as one of the choices. I like it, but it's about $5/lb so I'd rather cook it at home & have something fancier in a resto.

Sushi: traditional vs modern

Studying "Oriental Philosophy" is quite different from eating (and living) in Japan. Sushi is not the equivalent of a "great hot dog wagon" (an oxymoron, btw). It's more like an expensive dinner out, at either a fancy restaurant or a hole-in-the-wall (for the foodies--grungy does not equal cheap in Japan).

Also, the hotels you referred to as "shoeboxes" are capsule hotels, so-called because you actually sleep in a pod. Shoeboxes are the buildings that went up all over Tokyo during the bubble years.

Although the "bubble" did "burst" in the 90s, the Japanese economy has never collapsed.

Methinks you read too much and experience too little.

Root Hill Cafe

How do you see the crema through the milk? Lattes don't have crema, espresso does.

TOP 5 RESTAURANTS WITHIN TEN BLOCKS

YIKES! Fairly limited is right--I wouldn't eat in any of those places except Elora's. Elora's has great Cuban/Puerto Rican/Spanish food, best roast pork in town. Enzo's brick oven pizza was decent, crust could've been crunchier. Dub Pies is good at what they do.

But hey, if you eat hot dogs and other foodlike substances, I guess you'll eat anywhere.

Dub's Pies Coming to Windsor Terrace?

Anybody know anything about the rumoured bakery on PPW between Prospect Ave & 17th?

Best sushi in Brooklyn

Taro hands down. Makes a difference if you sit at the bar. Gen is second, not traditional but very good. I think Gen is the best all-around Japanese in Brooklyn, far better than Geido, and w/ much better service.

As far as I know, these 3 are the only authentic Japanese places in Brooklyn (although i did go to BR once and had a Japanese sushi chef). Most of the others are Chinese.

Why Al Di La and not Locanda Vini e Oili???

Funny comments. I've never been a regular at V&O (go maybe once/yr) but the owner always remembers & greets me.

I like both places, but I've always found al di la's food a bit salty. Works for me as I like salty food, but I usually tire of it before the end of the dish.

The worst place for dissing the non-regulars is Geido on Flatbush. I like the food, but once had the waitress cut a regular into the line in front of us (and then lie about it). they don't like non-regulars at the sushi bar at all.

Finally...good coffee in Fort Greene

The just-opened Bittersweet on DeKalb Ave. has a gorgeous Faema espresso machine, uses the right beans, and makes some real coffee!

They've also got homemade ice cream--the coconut is awesome!

Smoke Joint--Ofiicially Open Yet?

Wow, is this what took the Cambodian's place???

park slope ethnic?

Taka on Dean St. betw. 5th Ave & Flatbush is one of two real Japanese restaurants in Brooklyn (the other is Geido, good food, bad attitude) and possibly the best sushi in town, if you sit at the counter and have the Master prepare your food. Wantana on 7th Ave around 14th St is excellent Thai. Watch out, most of the Asian restaurants are not authentic and awful. (avoid Beet, Rice Thai, and any "Japanese" on 7th Ave)

Head over to the south Slope and Sunset Park for real Mexican and Central American food (too many to mention).

Elora's on PPW & 17th St. is great Cuban/Puerto Rican, the roast pork is the best in town (I've never tried their Cal-mex food, it gets mixed reviews).

Middle Eastern food on Atlantic Ave (OK, not the Slope) Fountain and that fancy one on the corner of Clinton.

And for Italian, of course Al Di La, for French, Cocotte.

chow experiences in Fort Greene

Well I LIKE Olea....Scopello too. Have not been to Cafe Lafayette but the owner recently opened Choice Cafe in Clinton Hill which has awsome pastries and sandwiches. On Myrtle is a great Korean place called Sushi OkDol. Skip the sushi and go for the Korean "casseroles"
