The Savory Spice shop has opened at Atherton Mill in Charlotte

The thing I really like is that you can buy spices in quantities from ounces to pounds. Inspired by Sara Dickerman's rant on Slate.com against putting black pepper on everything, I stopped by last week looking for some spices she suggested as replacement. Bought a ounce of Aleppo red pepper, so fresh that it left oil stains on the container. Great stuff. The next time I'm in I will be getting the big bottle.

Pontiac Pointe in Albemarle NC Closes

Yes I had lunch there on Friday. Good service. They still must be training staff as there was a bunch of them. I'll hold my opinion on the food as a French Dip sandwich is not much to go by. The fries were great though.

Loose tea in Charlotte?

Tea Rex in Atherton Mill off of South Blvd. Great selection of loose tea. Go quickly since they are closing the shop in June and going on-line only. www.tearex.com

Tea Rex in Charlotte Closing

Not surprised to read in today's Charlotte Observer that the Tea Rex tea shop on South Blvd is closing. Tea Rex has a great selection and a knowledgeable staff, but the whole Atherton Mill complex has been loosing tenants for years. It was good to read that they will keep selling tea on-line, but I will miss being able to go to the shop and taste the different teas.

visitor seeks charlotte NC's best local fare

Just to make it clear that Price's is take-out and $Cash$ only . Closed Sunday and Monday. Put me down as someone who can't understand the hype about Price's. It is good fried chicken, but the best in the South?

The "Elizabeth Ave" Restaurant Strip - Charlotte

Roti bread (pancake). I heard Chef Reinhart rave about them one day on Charlotte Talks and had to try them the next time I was there. They are now a must have every time I visit.

Good Eats -- Beckley WV?

Probably not what you want for Dinner, but try the Tamerac Arts and Craft Center at the Beckley Turnpike Rest Stop for lunch. It is a upscale cafeteria with the food on steam trays but it is ran by the Greenbrier Resort and is quite good for cafeteria food. Beats the Bob Evans, Cracker Barrel and the other chains around the exit in Beckley. I don't know anything else to recommend in the Beckley area. You might want to consider to take a 25 to 30 minute drive up US 19 N to Fayetteville which seems to have a better selection of places due to the tourist trade going to the New River Gorge. I don't have any advice for there either, but I know there are some if you search the forum.

Pontiac Pointe in Albemarle NC Closes

The restaurant closed Feb 13. Rumor has it that the owners paid over 1.5 mil on the renovations to the building and they never had enough income coming in. In related news, on e of the the co-owners, David Morgan, is still in the hospital after taking a 3 store fall off the roof of the restaurant while trying to fix the HVAC system.

The food was never that great, but it is still depressing to drive by the packed Applebee's a few blocks away, while a local independent bites the dust.

I-64 Road Trip

Stewarts Hot Dogs in Huntington WV. They are on the web. The easiest(?) to get too is the one inside of the Huntington Mall, but it lacks the ambence of the curb service at the 4th Ave or 8th(?) ave location. Actually at the Barboursville exit off of I-64

I-64 Road Trip

Not sure if it qualifies as must-visit, but if it works out, eat at the cafe in the Tamarack Craft Center at the Beckley rest stop on the WV Turnpike (I-64) it is ran by the Greenbrier hotel and is a cut above your average Cracker Barrel fair.

Charlotte: Flying Biscuit Cafe - No Bueno

Hate to admit it but we were going to Nothing But Noodles and got invited in for the soft opening on Monday. I had the scrambled eggs and my wife had one egg over easy. Both were overcooked. Outside of that, the person who said it was like an IHOP was spot on. Commercial comfort food, no different that Dennys or Bob Evans. The service was great though.

Marshall University - Huntington, WV

Stewart's Hot Dogs on 5th for lunch. A Huntington and Marshall tradition. If you want to get your daughter started on her Freshman 15, go to a Tudors Biscuit World for Breakfast and get a Herd biscuit. You will understand why WV has one of the highest rates of obesity and heart disease in the country. Chilli Willies Mexican Cantina on 4th for lunch. Not down home, but another Marshall Tradition. I still morn the day that Wiggins Drive-Inn on 4th Ave across from Old Main burned. Great memories of scarfing down dinner with the Profs before a evening class. I'm sorry that I don't have any recomendations for a good down home regional cooking. I am only in Huntington over the holidays now and don't get a chance to try very many places. I don't know of any quality places that server regional fare. However if you are going through Beckley WV on I-77, stop the Tamerac Craft Center and eat at the Food Court. The Greenbriar Resort runs the food service there and it is worth the stop. "GO HERD!"

Uptown Charlotte Lunch

Verona Italian Eatery & Lounge 2nd Floor Ivey's Building 127 N. Tryon is good. Nice owner and staff and a good view down on the street. Caffe Sienna Italian Trattoria never gets any respect because it is in the Uptown Holiday Inn. I have taken several co-workers there and they are always amazed on how good the food is. A plus is that it is never crowded for lunch. Just Fresh in the Ivey's building is good, but I think that the quality has gone down in the last 8 months.

Second tier Q places in Carolinas

Whispering Pines and The Log Cabin in Albemarle NC. Both log burners and every bit as good as what you will get in the top tier BBQ joints. These are top tier places in mine and many other's book.

Atlanta to Roanoke to WV,-help along 81 and 77?

If you go through WV on I-77 try the cafeteria in the Tamarack Center at the Beckley WV rest stop. Yes a cafeteria, but it is ran by the Greenbriar Resort and has very good food. Also you get to browse the arts and crafts in the Center.

LA Hound traveling to Albemarle NC area, recs?

This is old posting but I thought I would add some suggestions for anyone coming to Albemarle since I have just joined Chowhounds.

Outside the usual chain restaurant offenders, Albemarle has several good places to eat. No 4 or even 3 star places of course, not unless you consider North Carolina BBQ in that category.

First off I consider The Boardroom and Pontiac Point restaurants just one step above Applebees and I don't go there except for lunch meetings with some of my clients who like the place. J.D. Shuckers on N 1st Street downtown has standard sports bar fare, not very well executed at that.

The Yakin Valley Steakhouse (Dinner only) on NC 740, is a good steakhouse with a extensive Wine list. Their days of operation are strange, so check ahead. Reservations are recommended as they get quite busy. Just behind Yakin Valley on Hico Street is the Mazatlan Mexican Restaurant, standard North of the border Mexican food, but of great quality and great service. The owners are 7th Day Adventists, so no alcohol and the place is closed on Saturday.

Ly Cuisine on N. 2nd Street is another place that has outstanding service and good quality food. They serve Thai cuisine. Not having much experience in Thai food, I can't comment on how traditional the menu is, but I like the food. The spices are turned down for the local crowd, but they will add the heat if you ask. The Chinese Restaurants in town are uniformly terrible.

The Rosebrier on US 52 N only serves lunch. Standard sandwiches and soups, but the scratch made pies are to die for. I recommend the coconut cream pie and to order your pie with your meal. If you wait to order it after the meal, it may be sold out as this place is packed for lunch and everyone orders dessert.

Whispering Pines and the Log Cabin BBQ restaurants are every bit as good as people have written about and are well worth the road trip. They are 4 star Q places in my opinion. Both are on US 52 on the North end of town.

If you want to see what North Carolina Fishcamp food is like, go to Pat and Micks on NC 740 just outside of New London, five miles or so North of Albemarle. If you like deep fried seafood, you will be in heaven. The two Bluebay Seafood restaurants in town serve plenty of deep fried seafood, but they are missing that fishcamp atmosphere. If you are into fresh quality seafood or clean arteries avoid these places at all cost.

Many of these places are closed on Mondays, so keep that in mind. Hope this helps everyone to chow well when they come to town.

Charlotte - pre-theater (Blumenthal) dinner

Don't forget that Spamalot is at Ovens Auditorium on Independence Blvd, not at the Blumenthal. I would try Carpe Diem on Elizabeth Ave, short jump to Ovens from there
