3 Nights in Venice

As long as you're in Dorsoduro, I'll recommend one of my favorites: Avogoria. When walking from the Accademia towards Campo Santa Margarita, take the immediate left upon entering Campo San Barnaba. Keep on until you cross one bridge. Its a hundred or so feet ahead on the left. The nondescript building houses a very modern interior (don't miss the bathrooms). There's a twenty foot square interior courtyard with a few tables, too. For some reason, its not uniformly too well regarded, but I like it.

Cooking and Sleeping in Umbria or Tuscany

Eek! Another great place bites the dust.

Cooking and Sleeping in Umbria or Tuscany

We spent a couple of days at Albergo Rosati, a few km south of Orvieto, several years ago. Eight or ten excellent rooms, community dinner every night that lasts until all of the wine and grappa is gone. Look it up in Slowtrav for enthusiastic recommendations. And a plus you can enjoy lunch at I Setti Consoli in Orvieto, my favorite restaurant in all of Italy.

HILTON HEAD - ANY current recs?

I've lived on HHI for over thirty years and have seen a few changes in the food scene. You should know that formal dress is never the norm anywhere on the island.

My brunch selection would be the Boathouse on Skull Creek. Big and boistrous. Parking is sometimes tight. (Squire Pope Road, northend.)

You can almost walk from Disney to Bistro 17 in Shelter Cove. Sit outside and look at the boats in the harbor. I like this place.

For excellent wood fired thin crust pizza go to Il Carpaccio. Also really good Northern Italian and not terribly expensive. (Pineland Station, north end.)

Another fine Italian place is Mulberry Street Trattoria. They now have a salumi, pasta, cheese, etc. store next door. Worth the trip. (After leaving the island, take the first left after the Moss Creek traffic light. Its right there.)

Wise Guys will reopen probably next week after expansion taking its "small bites, big drinks" bar and tapas theme to a full scale restaurant. Can't wait to see it. (Near Main Street, north end.)

BTW, Frankie Bones is next door to Wise Guys, run by the same group.

Il Palio - Chapel Hill

Thanks, Lulus Mom. I hadn't spoken with him for a couple of years.

Il Palio - Chapel Hill

Great! Got a phone number?

Il Palio - Chapel Hill

About ten years ago, Gennaro Villella was chef there. Any idea where he is now? I've lost his phone number.

First Visit to Hilton Head

Here are a couple of my favorites (besides Il Carpaccio):

Another good Italian restaurant is Mulberry Street Trattoria. Its the first left turn past the Moss Creek traffic light (of course, after you cross the mainland bridge).

Also try Bistro 17 in Shelter Cove Harbor (mid island).

Venice Dining in Sept/Oct

I've had several good experiences at Avogoria, at the west end of Dorsoduro, over the past few years. Yet it doesn't seem to get any mention. Any comments?

Lunch in Orvieto- Where not to miss?

jen: I guess I lik just about everything about ISC. The chef is a woman who had one Michelin star (don't know how it went away), the food and wine are tops and in season the outdoor dining is special. I always arrive late morning from Rome, lunch there and rent a car to drive into Umbria. I've had dinner there only once, but the tasting menu and wine pairings were excellent

Chow recs needed for trip to Charleston, Savannah, and Hilton Head

Three HHI Italian restaurants:

Michael Anthony's (south island) is very popular, deservedly so.

Mulberry Street Trattoria is, when going off island, the first left after the Moss Creek light.

Il Carpaccio (mid island) is always good and popular. Excellent thin crust, wood oven pizza.

Fabulous Time with Vino Roma!

OMG! Now I'm really looking forward to my vinoroma class on September 15!

Good eats near Richmond?

Thanks, all!

Good eats near Richmond?

I suppose we'd go $75 pp with a decent wine. And Italian would be good, or just good local.

Good eats near Richmond?

Wife and I will be driving SC to NY. It looks like Richmond is about halfway. Any good eats within ten or so miles from 95? Thanks.

Need recommendations for Bellagio, Lake Como

Wife and I stayed a few days at Silvio 8 or so years ago. The proprietor brought in the nets around noon so the fish was fresh. The dining room was full of locals every night. Take a look at their websight.

New Year's Eve in Tuscany - Il Rosselino, Pienza?

Il Rossellino seats 20 max and is a true mom and pop place. One of my visits Franca brought out a little wooden basket with one large porcino in it. Enzo sauted it with thyme and it was my dinner. Unforgetable.

Rome Restaurants were left to me – Now What?

The stroll from Piramide station to Remo is ten or fifteen minutes.

Rome Restaurants were left to me – Now What?

Pizzaria Remo in Testaccio also serves deep fried bacala. Take the Metro to Piramide, walk west down via Marmorata, turn left at Volpetti and you will be a block or so away. Ask anyone. Its a local institution. You'll have to armwrestle for an outdoor table.

Dosaduro area of Venice in early August?

I had two very good dinners a couple of weeks ago at Avogoria. When entering Campo San Barnab take a hard left. Its on the left a hundred or so meters after you cross a bridge. Very modern interior and a tiny courtyard.

An Agriturismo Question (Road Trip from Umbria to Piemonte)

I suggest you try Le Case Gialle, a few km west of Bevagna (Umbria). I guess you could call it an agriturismo since Mauro has 700 olive trees. (I am his US agent, which means nothing.) Mauro has won several all-Italy awards for his oil. They have five little apartments, a pool and daily delivery of a loaf of bread and the International Tribune. Montefalco is nearby (Sagrantino). I can give you any number of good eating places within twenty miles. You can google lecasegialle.it for their website. BTW, above mentioned Caprai winery is between Bavagna and Montefalco.

Umbria recommendations

Thanks for the information. The article in Food and Wine (or whichever) must have made Sal famous. Last time I visited his restaurant he was off giving lessons in Napa Valley, of all places. Oh well, I go to the Caprai winery for tastings so I guess I may see him there.

Umbria recommendations

When I visit Umbria I take the train from Rome to Orvieto to pick up a car. But Orvieto is home to my favorite restaurant in all of Italy: I Sette Consoli. Lunch under the tent is memorable.

My stays in Umbria are at Le Case Gialle, a few miles west of Bevagna and Mauro and Silvana are good friends and superior hosts.

In Bevagna I choose Osteria Piazza Onofri, in the center of town. Good local food and wine. Also try Ottovius, at the south entrance portal.

Nearby, of course, is Montefalco, of Sagrantino fame and in the central square is l'Alchemista. Enter the little enoteca and go downstairs. You'll never get past the antipasti.

While Foligno is not the most visited tourist city, its worth going there just to "dine" at Salvatori Denaro's place. Park at the railroad station and ask anyone for his restaurant. He is a local institution. After all the food and drink, hs will come to your table and add your obligation (in round numbers) on your paper "tablecloth" with the stub of a pencil. Most of the food comes from his farm. He was featured in a US food mag a few years ago.

At the top of Spello is La Bastiglia, a very nice hotel with views of the countryside. I call the kitchen "adventurous". (Bring money.)

On the Perugia-Spoleto road, just south of Trevi is Taverna del Pescatore. You have to watch for the single small sign. Its a right turn going south into a parking lot. Lunch under the big hyperbolic tent is a treat. A little stream with swans, etc. is a perfect lunch experience.

Enjoy your trip. Ciao.

I've lived on the island for thirty years and will give you my three favorites. All Italian.

Michael Anthony's on New Orleans Road (south end). Bring money.

Mulberry Street Trattoria. Going off island, take the first left after the Moss Creek light.

Il Carpaccio at Pineland Center. Least expensive of the lot and great thin crust pizza.
