Mustard Belt and Charleston, SC

I would delete BBQ King and Pawley's. Otherwise, that is an excellent list.

Just to clarify, Shealy's is in Leesville, about 30 miles from West Columbia. It's an institution, and it's worth a trip, but their mustard-based barbecue isn't the best. That being said, their fried chicken is out of this world, and their buffet overall is spectacular.

No beer and wine license I take it? Either way, I know to trust your advice. Off to Noah's.

I haven't been there in a while, but Lone Star BBQ in Santee can be a fun experience.

Charleston Trip Report, 4/13-4/17

Excellent! I just had the coddled egg at FIG for the first time on Tuesday evening. You're right. It's transcendent. I am glad you enjoyed your visit to the Palmetto State.

Disagree ... but to each his own!

I'd rather go to Little Pigs any day.

I was going to say more or less the same. Empire State South would be my choice.

Best Breakfast / Brunch spots in Beaufort, SC??

Littlemen, thank you for the recommendation. Saltus served an Easter brunch buffet. We went, and enjoyed it. The selection wasn't great, but the food was good, with the exception of the bacon which became rather soggy after spending too much time steaming in the buffet tray. Overall, I am very glad that we went.

I have been a fan of Saltus for years (for dinner), and I was glad to see that they opened for brunch.

Best Breakfast / Brunch spots in Beaufort, SC??

I will be in Beaufort this weekend (Easter) with my family, and we are looking for a good spot for Sunday brunch. I visit Beaufort very often, but good brunch restaurants remain a mystery. Any help would be much appreciated.

Questions about Lexington #1 BBQ

Tee, it looks like you are having some fun! Maybe I was underwhelmed by Lexington #1 because I was expecting so much - or maybe it was an off day on both of the two days that I ate at Lexington #1, I don't know. I actually sat at the little counter, too, both times. Super nice folks, and it's an institution and a really cool place ... but I wasn't knocked out by the BBQ itself. I thought it was just okay. It was neat to visit a couple of times, but that will do it for me.

In North Carolina, both The Pit and Allen and Son were much, much better for me.

I am a big BBQ eater and a former competition BBQ judge, and this place was a huge disappointment for me. Prepare yourself to be profoundly underwhelmed.

I will defer to the locals, but on a recent visit we very much enjoyed both Nine-Ten and Georges Ocean Terrace.

I don't disagree with your assessment of Panini, really. I probably should have put it in the same category as Plum's: it's okay.

good eats near Sheraton/airport?

During my recent visit, prepkitchen, Underbelly, Cafe Chloe, and Cowboy Star were all great spots, all of which were a very short cab ride (or a LONG leisurely walk) from the Airport/Sheraton area.

I did just as McGrath suggests above and had a really nice lunch at prepkitchen. Short hop from the Sheraton.

Looking for a restaurant in San Diego that has Turnip Greens on their menu!

Cracker Barrel. Yikes! From my perspective, that's like recommending Chili's for authentic Mexican cuisine. I'll trust you that it's the best one can hope for "nearby" in Arizona. jdzeppelin may need to just make turnip greens at home.

I am a native South Carolinian, and I have been eating and cooking that kind of food for my entire life. There isn't much of a distinction in the preparation of turnip greens vs. the preparation of collard greens. The only real difference is that one frequently sees a smattering of finely diced turnips mixed in with the turnip greens. Southerners sometimes mix different greens (turnip, mustard, collard) depending on what is available. Both collard greens and turnip greens have a very strong flavor, but if the greens have gone through at least one frost (or if they have spent an hour or so in the freezer) then they'll be sweeter.

I recently prepared collard greens using Hugh Acheson's method in his recent cookbook "A New Turn in the South." Acheson's recipe is spot-on. jdzeppelin may want to use that method, and incorporate some diced turnips. Good luck!

I'm in South Carolina, and I don't know of any places HERE that serve turnip greens instead of collard greens. Good luck!

They're both based in Columbia, SC, with lots of outposts of Groucho's throughout the state.

Just a guess, but I'd say it's mayo, ketchup, dill, black pepper, and garlic salt.

But then again, you could always buy it bottled from Groucho's.

1st visit to Charleston: Please critique our plans

Great list. Bowen's Island isn't for everyone, and High Cotton isn't as good as FIG, Husk or McCrady's, but still very much worth a visit. You will have a great time!

Farmers' Market in Columbia, SC?

As much as it pains me to say this, the State Farmers' Market is not at all worth a trip, and should be skipped - at least until some changes are made.

The all local market is the brilliant 701 Whaley Street market, just to clarify for future readers.
