HELP Please ! Need restaurant in Sacramento(Rancho Cordova) area for New Years Eve....

I don't think there is much available in the Rancho Cordova area. You would be better off searching for something in Folsom or Downtown/Midtown Sac if you can drive.

Lunch in Redding

I thought I would update this in case anyone is searching. There is a newish place - over a year- available as a very good lunch option. It has very fresh and healthy options - salads, fresh soups, sandwiches, bison burgers... A very good option for lunch in Redding, but not super easy to find.

Requesting Decadent Blondie Recipe

As a purist, I'm not sure how the epi recipe qualifies as a Blondie since it doesn't have white or butterscotch chips. I'm a firm CI devotee and their added vanilla combined with the white chocolate chips form that true butterscotch taste. I personally feel like butterscotch chips taste fake, but that's a personal opinion. The versions noted here with coconut and all the other add ins make those into Congo bars and take them out of the Blondie relm. (Can you tell I'm really into Blondies? lol.)

I need to eat more veggies, but don't really like them...Please help me with some ideas.

There are a few cookbooks available right now (aimed at parents of children) that have recipes which "hide" vegetables in everyday recipes. [Deceptively Delicious and The Sneaky Chef are 2 of the cookbooks.] If you really don't like them, you might try some of the methods for cooking with them so they aren't obvious. I also vote for grilling them - tossed in olive oil and salt, grilled asparagus or zucchini almost feel like eating french fries. You also might look for recipes which include an ingredient you really love - something with a strong flavor like bacon or a strong cheese so you will focus on that flavor that you really enjoy and associate vegetables with that. Good luck!

Dorris California - any decent chow?

I'm not sure I would call Dorris a "regional center." It's pretty much an outpost. Calpine has a small population, but is just a few miles away from Graeagle and that region's gated golfing communities which bring vacationing patrons with lots of money to spend. I'm not sure there are many people vacationing around Dorris... just lots of cows and lots of 18 wheelers plowing through on their way out of state.

Dorris California - any decent chow?

It seems that "the bar" used to be the local gathering spot. It served food as well, so it was functionally a pub in the sense of what a pub would be in say Ireland. It had a severe fire and it didn't make economic sense for the owners to reopen.

Dorris California - any decent chow?

Thanks everybody. We were having unseasonably warm weather last week (70 in Redding/45 in Dorris) which is why we ended up going this time of year. One of my colleagues had eaten at the Mexican place and declared it "horrible" which left the pizza place and the drive in. (The bar had a fire and is now closed.) Faced with what appeared to be a dire situation, we ended up snacking on trail mix and driving back to Mt. Shasta to have lunch at the Billy Goat. Sure it was about 2:30 by the time we ate, but given the scenario we all agreed we made the right choice.

Dorris California - any decent chow?

Wow! Thanks for the reply. I will be traveling up 97 (today in fact, from Redding.) Back up plan is bring snacks and eat on our way back in Mt. Shasta, but that makes for a very late lunch. I will report back tonight.

Dorris California - any decent chow?

Looking for any comments on restaurants in the City of Dorris.

Going to Redding on I-5 from San Francisco?

Again - obviously a late reply, but the now open Kobe is doing a great job for lunch. I haven't had the sushi yet, but have had the teppanyaki and bento box lunches. They quality of their ingredients was better than any of the other Japanese places in Redding. They would also be able to serve a large group.

Sports Bar between Weed and Redding

This is obviously too late for the original poster, but Billy Goat's Tavern in Mt. Shasta would fit the bill. They are not a "sports bar" but did have television with sports when I visited and the food was much better than you would find at most places in the area. I had the Kobe beef burger with a side of curried carrot soup and it was all fantastic. www.thegoatmtshasta.com

Davis Saturday Farmer's Market

I love the tamales and the same vendor has what are reported to be delicious breakfast burritos.

best taqueria in redding

Hi alfredo- Sorry I missed your post on the other thread (I'm doing weight watchers right now and reading about food doesn't really help much.) I'm so glad to hear you tried and liked Fat Burrito! We think it's good, but you never know if you've lost your pallet entirely and are confusing "good for Redding" with "actually good." Nice to hear you concur.

Best meals under 15 bucks in Sac! (tip included!)

Anything at Nopalitos on H Street around 56th. My favorite is their Tinga chicken tostada.

Yreka, Siskiyou County suggestions?

Made the trek to Yreka today and was out voted by colleagues - no Silver Spoon for us. We ate at Casa Ramos :(

Dress Code Oahu and Big Island

I don't know many places that wouldn't accept you, but you would definitely be dressed for another occasion if you showed up at say, Alan Wong's in hiking pants and tennis shoes. It seems like men would generally be wearing light trousers of linen or cotton and a nice hawaiian print shirt - even slippers would stand out less than tennis shoes. Women would be wearing skirt or pants - not terribly fancy but chic casual.

Yreka, Siskiyou County suggestions?

Admittedly, it was just soup and salad, but I enjoyed Nature's Kitchen. We'll be back between Weds. and Sat. What kind of food does Silver Spoon offer? Dunsmuir is a bit far from Yreka if you're not on a road trip...

Yreka, Siskiyou County suggestions?

Thanks for the update! I'll be in Yreka one day this week, but we'll likely just be eating lunch. I'm going to print out your post, but I really hope Nature's Kitchen is open!

Anyone eaten at Senthong's in Dunsmuir lately?

I don't know if this is too late for you, but just spoke to my Dunsmuir dwelling friend. He still likes Senthong's but hasn't eaten there in about 6 months. He told me the guy who runs it basically does it for fun and so the hours vary. Not sure this helps at all.

Yreka, Siskiyou County suggestions?

I'm not sure if it's open for dinner, but over the summer I had lunch at a place called Nature's Kitchen. Everything was super fresh and billed as organic. They baked their own bread and had a small assortment of baked items for sale too. I had a curried carrot soup with salad and bread and my colleague had some sort of huge sandwich made on the beautiful bread. We each got cookies for the road and they were very tasty. It was nice. Here are the coordinates. It's attached to a holistic store filled with vitamins, herbal remadies, and lots of new agey decorative items.

Anyone eaten at Senthong's in Dunsmuir lately?

Of all my trips to Dunsmuir in the last 5 years (approx once a month) Senthong's has never been open. (I don't think they are open for lunch on weekends.) I have a friend who lives in Dunsmuir. I'll try to locate him and ask if he has any recent opinions to offer.

Any ideas for Redding, CA?

So glad to hear you avoided the chains! Thanks for letting us know how it turned out. I'm also glad to hear you were able to enjoy our best season. The hot, hot temps are right around the corner (however my friends from SF have been known to come up and thaw out up here during the summer.)

Russian Or Eastern European Stores In Sacramento

There is a vigorous Russian community in West Sacramento. These were listed in the Sac Wiki pages under Russian groceries: I think you might find more in W. Sacto just by driving around.

Ararat European Market & Bakery
Europa Food Market (2955 West Capitol Avenue, westsacWest Sacramento)
Odessa European Market and Bakery (7307 Fair Oaks Boulevard, Carmichael)

Locke & Walnut Grove Chow [split from "Halfway btw Berkeley & Sacr thread on SF Board]

I shouldn't argue about semantics, but have a hard time believing RV is "Bay area..." Isleton is directly across the river from it so they should both be on the same board.

Any ideas for Redding, CA?

How adventurous are you? A week of eating out in Redding is a lot to ask. I posted about my favorite place (Racha Noodle) on the post linked by millevillemurphs. I would do a lot of eating there. After living in Redding for almost 5 years now (after living in the East Bay,) I've started to enjoy a few restaurants here occasionally for the sheer spectacle - food must be passable, but more of a social science experience. One place that fits the bill is called Giff's in a U shaped "strip" mall on Bechelli Lane, south of Cypress Ave. It's a hamburger/hot dog joint that's been there a really long time. A cop we know took us there. Their speciality is called "the ugly burger." It's a real hamburger kind of in an irregular shape - at least you know it wasn't frozen from Costco. The food is cooked on some type of indoor charcoal grill by a salty gentleman who always has a nice sized glass of beer in his hand. Burgers are good (bun was weak) and there is a "toppings bar" where you add whatever you want. Grilled hot dog was delicious and onion rings were proclaimed "the best ever" by a family member from out of town. Decor is heavy on Nascar... Some other passable daytime options - San Francisco Deli or Sandwichery for basic sandwiches or The Cheesecake Factory on Cypress by Safeway for salads. Nothing to write home about, but usually good fresh ingredients as these places do brisk business. One place I used to frequent but haven't in a long while (due to very slow service) is called Senor Rosas. It's a California burrito place on Hwy 299 West aka Eureka Way. They have a fair number of vegetarian offerings if I recall and not greasy like a lot of the Mexican places in town. If looking for Chinese, try Sailing Boat on Churn Creek. The family who run it are from Hong Kong.

I'll post more later if I can think of anything else.

I think the Hilton Garden Inn has refrigerators and microwaves in the rooms if you want to stock up from home...

Redding eats

There is a place in Chico called Red Tavern that is supposed to be great.

Redding eats

Apologies Sarah, I haven't been on CH much lately. Sorry to miss your post and leave someone traveling my way to fend for themselves in the sea of chains up here. millevillemurphs gives some options, however since moving to Redding close to 5 years ago and trying nearly every restaurant, my advice is to steer clear of anyplace trying to be "nice." The most frustrating thing at those places is usually the service being totally horrendous and the food being lackluster - especially if you have access to really good food elsewhere to compare it to. My favorites are all pretty much in the slightly dive-y category.

My favorite Redding restaurant is called Racha Noodle. It's a Thai place that also serves some pho'. It's located on Hwy 273 south at the intersection with California Street. Other than one night when the beef pho' was really bland, everything we've tried has been delightful and we usually eat there at least once a week. My favorite dish is a spicy soup called Khao Soy (chicken.) It's a huge portion of spicy curried soup with chicken, rice noodles, bean shoots, a hard boiled egg and perhaps a few additional assorted vegetables. I dream of the stuff and that's saying a lot for Redding. Other than that I recently started going to a mexican place called El Mariachi's on Churn Creek road. I had always discounted it because the parking lot was so full (tends to be a bad sign here) but this place does some actual Mexican food. Their mole is delicious - it's in the chile coloradito style, sweet and hot. They also do nice machaca, albondigas soup, and menudo.

Other than these two places, we've yet to find a place where everything is good. It's hit or miss, dish by dish. We do like to go to a place called Jeff's California Cattle Company on Cypress Blvd. for breakfast. They have great buttermilk pancakes - plate sized and very fluffy plus good link sausages. Everything is enormous, so we usually order a pancake for each and an order of link sausage for the table of 3. I've seen other tables order any of their other gigantic offerings. The plates are so big I can't get my mind around the idea of anything but the pancakes since they're good. That's it for now...I'll post more if I think of anything else.

As to where to stay - after trying a few different places (including Oxford - yikes!) during phases of a house remodel, I would recommend the Hampton Inn. No view etc., but it's new and had nicer sheets than I expected for the price. There is also a Hilton Garden Inn (same company as Hampton) in south Redding that has river view rooms, but it's not near any food establishments.

does anyone else hate eating alone in public?

I used to, but now relish the thought. (I now have a small child and the chances to have a leisurely meal where I can linger are rare!) When I first entered the solo dining arena it was due to work travel. That didn't bother me as clearly I had a "reason" for dining alone i.e. "she's a business traveler." While I didn't hesitate to dine alone during the week, the weekend was another story. Somehow being a solo diner on date night is still an uncomfortable idea for me. Try bringing a book etc. and see how it goes. If you really can not enjoy it then look for some gourmet take out and enjoy it at home. Enjoy is the key!
