Carrie,

Thanks so much for the reply and for sharing your thoughts. Would you be willing to share the bakery/bakeries you opt for, coast side or on the Peninsula? Taste and quality trump so much for us, so we're so willing to look outside the box!

Traditional Wedding Cake - Coastside/Half Moon Bay, Peninsula

Hi everyone,

We're getting married on the coast in the fall, and looking for a quality baker to make our wedding cake. We both LOVE cake when it's really moist and delicious. We want something fairly traditional, and we're definitely more buttercream people than fondant fans. By traditional, more along the lines of a solid yellow cake or white cake, maybe a light mousse/whipped cream filling, a solid buttercream icing. Open to considering more "creative" cake flavors perhaps on just one layer. We want it to be all cake, so no recs please for cake/cheesecake combo.

The last thing we want is to spend hundreds of dollars for a beautifully decorated cake that's mediocre-tasting!

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Vegetarian Restaurants with a View?

Hi all,

A special birthday's coming up, and we're trying to find a nice vegetarian restaurant with a good view. Greens is usually our go to, but we're trying to expand out. Have been to Millennium years ago, and we all seem to enjoy Greens more than Millennium (granted we had brunch at M., and only lunch and dinners at G.). Doesn't need to be in SF, Peninsula/South Bay/Coastside fine as well. Vegetarian, vegan, as well as non-veg restaurants that are very vegetarian and/or vegan friendly all welcomed.

Any suggestions appreciated in advance!

Dosa party vendor recommendations?

Thank you, Melanie and ceekskat! I really appreciate the input. We really don't want to make a blind decision on such an important part of our dinner. These are great suggestions, and we'll research them further. I also learned y'day that there's a place called Chennai Grill in Dublin...have any CH's adventured there?

Thanks again so much!

Hi all,

Any recommendations welcomed for a solid vendor to hire for a vegetarian, South Indian style dosa party on site for a private party.

Thank you in advance!

lupini beans???

Hi Taurus - Thank you! This is very helpful. I'm going to give this a try, and will report back. I might wait to replace the brine with water until the weekend, as the holidays are coming up and beans are not on our menu! Thanks again, and happy Thanksgiving!

lupini beans???

Hi all -

I recently bought a large glass jar of lupini beans (in brine) at a Middle Eastern market. I was so excited, given the nutritional value of these beans and the cost (24 oz was about $3.50!). I was hoping to serve them as part of a meze platter for a recent party. I even read this thread before buying them! But, I opened the jar and tasted one...and it was in fact, quite bitter. The beans are light yellow colored. Am I supposed to peel off the outer covering (I don't even know if there is one)?

Any input much appreciated in advance!

Where should I get a gift card from for an advanced home baker w/ limited supplies?

I'm looking to gift a friend who loves to bake exquisitely delicious pastries, cakes, and cookies. He's low in the supplies department (he's on a grad school budget), so thought a gift card to a cooking supply shop might be in order. Store ideas (online or brick-and-mortar is fine) where he could get the biggest bang for his buck? Thanks!

Desperately ISO Bengali restaurant in South Bay for tonight - Please help!

Hi All -

Very much searching for a Bengali restaurant. South Bay or Peninsula preferable, but not required. A place that serves authentic Bengali dishes (especially fish dishes) very much welcomed.

Looks like Cafe Dhaka would have been a good option, if they were still open.

Thank you in advance!

Help! Are there local u-pick berry farms that are open now?

Trying urgently to locate u-pick berry farms (not particular about specific berry types) that are open in July. Looks like a bunch of the Brentwood farms (including Pease Farm) are closed. We're able to travel from the East Bay all the way down to the South Bay. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

best way to store radishes in fridge?

Cherylptw and greygarious, thank you. Based on your recommendations, I lobbed off the roots and tops, and I'm storing them unwashed in the crisper. And greygarious, I'd never thought to cook the greens, but reading your post on another thread re: radishes had me curious. Topped with some homemade garlic chips and a pinch of red pepper flakes...they were so delicious. Thanks!

best way to store radishes in fridge?

The last bunch I got dried up before I used all of it (I just stuck it in the fridge). I just picked up a large beautiful bunch that I'd like to keep fresh for several days. Ideas? TIA.

Where to hold an engagment party in LA..cool vibe

Congrats! A friend rented the back room at the Library Bar for a birthday celebration, and it was truly great. Really cool, yet relaxed vibe. How many on the guest list?

how do you freeze store-bought ice cream rock solid?

I recently bought a carton of Breyer's that I placed in the freezer immediately after returning home from the market. It was rock solid (think brick) at the market, and was very solid when I pushed it into the freezer. Several hours later, it's softened up instead of freezing!!! What's the deal? I'm craving a firm texture, not something that melts away the minute I take it out of the freezer. I'm wondering if it has to do with the freezer being stuffed with other items? CHers, can you help me figure this out? TIA.

Anyone remember the Oreo brand oreo-mint ice cream?

Thanks! Unfortunately, I'm in a locale not close to either of the regional spots that livetocook and Dizzied mentioned, so Ben & Jerry's it is (mpjmph, thanks for the lead -- I had no idea that flavor existed!).

Pico Robertson..did my gf move us to no man's land?

+1 for Al Gelato. I've moved from the area, but still visit the joint every time I'm in the area. Their tomato sauce seriously has crack in it. So good.

Anyone remember the Oreo brand oreo-mint ice cream?

Anyone remember when the Oreo brand produced its own line of ice cream in the mid 1980s? My most favorite was the mint flavor, that was studded with sizeable pieces of Oreo cookies. Mint and cookies and cream...all in one. I haven't seen this brand in decades...

Does anyone know if any of the large national brands make similar flavor? Would love to get my hands on some soon. Otherwise, I may get desperate and buy a container of Breyers mint chip + a package of Oreo cookies :) TIA.

Best Ice Cream Brand

Nate650, I completely agree with you. My friend and I tried Straus's ice cream at Bi-Rite this weekend, and I haven't stopped thinking about it. I chose burnt caramel and mint chip, and she got cookies and cream. We also sampled a bunch of other flavors. Each one was phenomenal. Very creamy and authentic to said flavor, but lacking the heavy fat-coating aftertaste that has turned me off of some of the premo store brands like Haagan Daz.

What to do with Zatar?

Lately, I've become completely obsessed with labneh sprinkled with zaatar. With cucumbers, pita, tomato wedges, you name it. I picked up a contained of Byblos-brand labneh at a Middle eastern grocery store, and I polished it off in just a few days (yikes! The fat content is *so* high). I tried to make a lower-fat version of labneh at home by straining two containers of TJ's lowfat greek yogurt, but it just didn't compare to the store bought version. Any suggestions on how to match the taste of the store-bought version without all the fat? I'm guessing I know the answer (that the fat is what makes it so good ;)), but any recommendations would be mighty helpful...to the taste buds, as well as to the pocketbook (over the long run). Thanks!

Vegetarian bbq?

I saw a terrific recipe for grilled haloumi in the June (or May?) issue of Bon Appetit this year (available online). I'm trying to locate haloumi not made from animal rennet, which has been challenging to say the least. It may not be an issue for some vegetarians, but sadly, it's a deal breaker for us :(

Mangos are on sale!

I love mango in quesadillas, too. Love to make a grilled goat cheese and mango quesadilla (two flour tortillas, dabs of goat cheese, slices of peeled mango). The saltiness and sweetness pair nicely with any hot salsa served on the side.

Ghirardelli vs cheaper cocoa powder

A recent indulgence has been making hot cocoa with TJ's cocoa powder. I read somewhere that hot cocoa could be whisked into water (not milk), so I attempted to try that with the TJ's version and sweetening it with honey or sugar. Delicious. Haven't attempted to bake with it yet.
