Desperately ISO Bengali restaurant in South Bay for tonight - Please help!

Hi All -

Very much searching for a Bengali restaurant. South Bay or Peninsula preferable, but not required. A place that serves authentic Bengali dishes (especially fish dishes) very much welcomed.

Looks like Cafe Dhaka would have been a good option, if they were still open.

Thank you in advance!

Help! Are there local u-pick berry farms that are open now?

Thanks so much, wolfe! We are off to pick olallieberries and strawberries.

Help! Are there local u-pick berry farms that are open now?

Trying urgently to locate u-pick berry farms (not particular about specific berry types) that are open in July. Looks like a bunch of the Brentwood farms (including Pease Farm) are closed. We're able to travel from the East Bay all the way down to the South Bay. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

best way to store radishes in fridge?

Cherylptw and greygarious, thank you. Based on your recommendations, I lobbed off the roots and tops, and I'm storing them unwashed in the crisper. And greygarious, I'd never thought to cook the greens, but reading your post on another thread re: radishes had me curious. Topped with some homemade garlic chips and a pinch of red pepper flakes...they were so delicious. Thanks!

best way to store radishes in fridge?

The last bunch I got dried up before I used all of it (I just stuck it in the fridge). I just picked up a large beautiful bunch that I'd like to keep fresh for several days. Ideas? TIA.

Anyone remember the Oreo brand oreo-mint ice cream?

mpjmph, I tried the Ben & Jerry's version of mint chocolate cookie tonight...OH MY. It is even better (no surprise) than the Oreo brand version I remembered. Thanks for the rec!

Where to hold an engagment party in LA..cool vibe

Congrats! A friend rented the back room at the Library Bar for a birthday celebration, and it was truly great. Really cool, yet relaxed vibe. How many on the guest list?

how do you freeze store-bought ice cream rock solid?

I recently bought a carton of Breyer's that I placed in the freezer immediately after returning home from the market. It was rock solid (think brick) at the market, and was very solid when I pushed it into the freezer. Several hours later, it's softened up instead of freezing!!! What's the deal? I'm craving a firm texture, not something that melts away the minute I take it out of the freezer. I'm wondering if it has to do with the freezer being stuffed with other items? CHers, can you help me figure this out? TIA.

Anyone remember the Oreo brand oreo-mint ice cream?

Thanks! Unfortunately, I'm in a locale not close to either of the regional spots that livetocook and Dizzied mentioned, so Ben & Jerry's it is (mpjmph, thanks for the lead -- I had no idea that flavor existed!).

Pico Robertson..did my gf move us to no man's land?

+1 for Al Gelato. I've moved from the area, but still visit the joint every time I'm in the area. Their tomato sauce seriously has crack in it. So good.

Anyone remember the Oreo brand oreo-mint ice cream?

Anyone remember when the Oreo brand produced its own line of ice cream in the mid 1980s? My most favorite was the mint flavor, that was studded with sizeable pieces of Oreo cookies. Mint and cookies and cream...all in one. I haven't seen this brand in decades...

Does anyone know if any of the large national brands make similar flavor? Would love to get my hands on some soon. Otherwise, I may get desperate and buy a container of Breyers mint chip + a package of Oreo cookies :) TIA.

Best Ice Cream Brand

Nate650, I completely agree with you. My friend and I tried Straus's ice cream at Bi-Rite this weekend, and I haven't stopped thinking about it. I chose burnt caramel and mint chip, and she got cookies and cream. We also sampled a bunch of other flavors. Each one was phenomenal. Very creamy and authentic to said flavor, but lacking the heavy fat-coating aftertaste that has turned me off of some of the premo store brands like Haagan Daz.

What to do with Zatar?

Lately, I've become completely obsessed with labneh sprinkled with zaatar. With cucumbers, pita, tomato wedges, you name it. I picked up a contained of Byblos-brand labneh at a Middle eastern grocery store, and I polished it off in just a few days (yikes! The fat content is *so* high). I tried to make a lower-fat version of labneh at home by straining two containers of TJ's lowfat greek yogurt, but it just didn't compare to the store bought version. Any suggestions on how to match the taste of the store-bought version without all the fat? I'm guessing I know the answer (that the fat is what makes it so good ;)), but any recommendations would be mighty helpful...to the taste buds, as well as to the pocketbook (over the long run). Thanks!

Vegetarian bbq?

I saw a terrific recipe for grilled haloumi in the June (or May?) issue of Bon Appetit this year (available online). I'm trying to locate haloumi not made from animal rennet, which has been challenging to say the least. It may not be an issue for some vegetarians, but sadly, it's a deal breaker for us :(

Believe it or not, great vegan lasagna is possible!

I can't wait to try this! Looks fantastic. Thanks again for sharing the recipe!

Mangos are on sale!

I love mango in quesadillas, too. Love to make a grilled goat cheese and mango quesadilla (two flour tortillas, dabs of goat cheese, slices of peeled mango). The saltiness and sweetness pair nicely with any hot salsa served on the side.

Believe it or not, great vegan lasagna is possible!

Looks delicious, cathyeats. Mind sharing the recipe? Thanks!

Ghirardelli vs cheaper cocoa powder

A recent indulgence has been making hot cocoa with TJ's cocoa powder. I read somewhere that hot cocoa could be whisked into water (not milk), so I attempted to try that with the TJ's version and sweetening it with honey or sugar. Delicious. Haven't attempted to bake with it yet.

Best Vegan Desserts?

schrutefarms, I'm right there with you...I absolutely adore Uncle Eddie's vegan cookies!!! Their trail mix cookies are very good, but the chocolate chip cookies are #1 in my book.

vegetarian french onion soup recipe?

Desperately searching for a very good vegetarian french onion soup to serve at a special family birthday dinner. Even better if you've tried the recipe and can attest to its goodness. Thanks in advance!

Looking for seitan ideas

PersnicketyChicky, I'd love to have your adapted recipe for the seitan shepherd's pie! It sounds remarkably similar to a dish I had at Hugo's Restaurant in Los Angeles a few months ago. Soon thereafter, I started hunting online for a recipe (and posted a request on CH). I think your recipe sounds very similar to what I had (they used tofu instead of seitan, but I think I'd actually prefer seitan). TIA!

Pitch black chocolate cake and icing recipes?

i was looking at another recent post on this board (for kung pao recipes), and one of the CHers posted a link to this Leite's Culinaria. i was curious, and clicked on the link and saw this recipe, which reminded me of *your* post...a CH's six-degrees-of-separation moment of sorts :) not sure if this fits the bill, but here's the link:

how would you make a jalapeno salsa shmear a la Noah's Bagels?

I've recently become totally addicted to Noah's jalapeno salsa shmear. Any idea on how one could replicate it? Thanks in advance!

ideas to use up grapefruits a bit past their prime?

CHs, please tell me what to do with old(er) grapefruits. I have a sack of them that we haven't finished in due time. They're beginning to look sad, but still appear edible. I've been baking grapefruits in the morning for breakfast, but there's still plenty remaining. Any quick recipes? TIA!

Eggplant Conundrum

odkaty, good catch. I forgot to mention that I also really mash down the eggplant. No big overcooked chunks at all.

Italian lemon sponge cake with lemon filling..does this sound familiar to anyone?

bushwickgirl, Thank you very much! You described what I was searching for to a "T". I just googled images of babka and kugelhopf, having never heard of either, and learned that what I ate is *most definitely* an Italian version of those cakey breads, as you so well described! (And you're so right ~ it's soooo not a sponge cake..my bad ;)). I've saved the Gubana recipe, and may try altering the filling a bit and instead using a lemon curd instead. And the Torta Alle Mandorle e Limoni recipe...oh my. That, too, looks heavenly. I think I'm in trouble j/k ;)

Thanks again so much for the leads!!

Waffle day - what's your favourite waffle topping?

HillJ, I just use a very little bit of milk or cream (I guess you could say cream helps to thin out the crepes, and thicken the hips lol ;)). Hope this helps?

Eggplant Conundrum

linguafood and OldTimer, I definitely agree. You need to cook the heck out of eggplant. My favorite eggplant dish is baingan bharta (an Indian spiced eggplant dish) that I make at home and serve with fresh hot garlic naan, lemon pickle, and raita. I wish it wasn't past dinner, because that sounds so good to me right now :) And actually, I "grill" the eggplant (kind of) directly on my gas stovetop...the key is to keep turning it (tongs are helpful). It will char and the skin will loosen considerably. A thick skin means cook it longer. I keep turning it until it's fully cooked, and then I pull it off the stovetop, and let it cool in a bowl for a few minutes. When it's cool to touch, I peel it (bits of char remaining are good!), and then I proceed to make the dish (with coriander seeds, fresh cilantro, tomatoes, and onions). So good. Just a warning - the stovetop will be a mess, but it's easy to clean and imho, so worth the scrubbing.

Italian lemon sponge cake with lemon filling..does this sound familiar to anyone?

I recently was given a slice of this type of lemon cake at a gathering. I was told it was from Costco. I meant to ask for the brand/details, but missed the boat and am now kicking myself. It was *so* good. It was more bread-like (brioche-y?) than cake crumb-like. The cake had a light lemony taste and there was a small layer of a rich lemon curd/lemon filling woven throughout the cake. It paired very well with earl grey (citrus notes, I'm guessing). I won't be back at Costco for another month or so, and I'm afraid that this might be a seasonal item! Any guesses as to how I might be able to replicate this cake? Thanks in advance!

Spring picnic ideas needed!

Happy early birthday, enjilico!

I'd recommend quinoa tabouli. I've never gone wrong with this recipe...it's delicious:
