Seafood and rice by the beach

have you considered Can Ros? http://www.canros.cat/

Of the ones you mention, I'd hit Cheriff. Agree with sockster that Can Majo is no longer what it was.

Barcelona Restaurant Report + Photos

On my visits to Viena I've found the bread to be exquisite...maybe you went on a bad day?
Also, I totally agree with your thoughts on La Rita. It's great for the non-adventurous but should be on no visiting Chowhound's must-do list. It's actually part of a national chain. It's OK because it´s made to be OK, not great.

Chinese New Year in Barcelona?

Real Chinese is hard to find here. Real Chinese doing a party is probably going to be even harder. This place...

http://www.shanghai1930.es

... is apparently throwing a bash this Saturday: http://www.timeout.cat/barcelona/ca/v...

I have no references for this place, I found it just looking for Chinese New Year recs. A quick Google search turns up favorable reviews, but mentions that the menu contains Chinese, Japanese and Spanish items.

The only "real" Chinese I've ever had in Barcelona is a shoddy little place in my neighborhood called Rio Dragon, run by magician who does magic tricks while you eat. Sounds cheesy but the food is legit. If you ask natives here what's the best Chinese place they know, many will say Rio Dragon.

I've also heard good things about Memorias de China, which is more upscale.
http://www.memoriasdechina.es

Not sure if they are doing anything to celebrate, though.

There is a huge Chinese population here. Unfortunately, the restaurants cater to Spanish tastes and therefore not authentic. So yeah, dim sum is going to be hard to get your hands on.

Reasonable Meals In Barcelona

I'm dining at this place tonight:

congracia.es

it's 55 euros per person and is considered by many as one of BCN's best-kept secrets.

Paella in Barcelona - good quality and fair $$$

this is off the main drag in Barceloneta, tucked away on a side street, but recommended:

Best Thai in Barcelona?

Good question. I'm looking for the same thing. Friends have told me Thai Gardens is great, but I'm doubtful and don't want to pay their prices. Thai Lounge looks really unauthentic, as there is nothing spicy on the menu. I know that Thai Thai (http://www.thaithai.es/) is owned and run by Thais, so I'm looking forward to checking it out. They also run a Thai food store in Eixample.

I don't know about you but my experience with Asian food in general in this city has been downright sad.

Calcotada

You'll be getting in on the tail end of the season but should be able to easily find a calçotada. The capital of the calçot is Valls, and there are lots of restaurants participating in the region-wide celebration (which had its big day last week). I'd get in touch with one like this: http://www.masiabou.com/cat/menucalso...

...(their email address is on the site) and ask when it officially ends.

Right now there calçots are everywhere here in Barcelona, but I'm not sure the season lasts as long as it does in Valls and Alt Camp.

For closer to Barcelona, I found this place:

http://www.restaurantedevesa.com/cals...

...but there are literally hundreds of places doing calçots all over Catalunya. If you are a fairly autonomous traveller

'Ninot' market in Barcelona

El Mercat del Ninot is perfectly fine for daily shopping. It doesn't have the famous stands that the Boquería has but that's better for you...less tourists and better prices. Their website is in Catalan but you can get a sense for what they have there (basically anything you could want): http://www.mercatdelninot.com/product...

Does anybody know what the current price per person for dinner or lunch is at El Bulli? Just curious to see whether it's gone up.

Best canned food of Spain

Berberechos! Put them in a dish with a little of their own juice, drizzle with a mild red wine vinegar and sprinkle a bit of pimenton dulce on top...this is the way the locals do it. Enjoy!

Decent sushi in Barcelona

I'm a little afraid to make my own sushi with raw fish from the market...afraid I'm going to poison myself or something! Honestly I know not what the difference is between the raw fish found at a market and the one found at a sushi bar in terms of quality/safety.

Thanks for the tip on the Chinese supermarket. If I get up the guts I'll try it.

Decent sushi in Barcelona

Thanks for the recommendations! I similarly don't get why a city with such exquisite seafood doesn't have more sushi restaurants and more variety. Guess it hasn't caught on here like it has in the States.

Decent sushi in Barcelona

Does it even exist? After a long love affair with the city, I've moved from the Bay Area -- a sushi paradise -- to Barcelona. It seems like a sushi desert. I've seen some restaurants, but they don't look promising...the only one that looked half decent was hawking a tekka roll for 18 euros!!!!!! Please help.

"Cleaning" salt-packed anchovies?

Hi guys, I foolishly bought some delicious-looking salt-packed anchovies without realizing I have no idea what to do with them. How do I "clean" them to serve them? Do I need to wash them? Debone (that seems impossible)? Please help. Thanks!!!

christmas in barcelona--what's open?

I can only comment on the grocery store part. The OpenCor chain (http://www.elcorteingles.es/opencor/p...) is open 365 days a year, and I know of at least two in Eixample:

http://www.elcorteingles.es/opencor/p...

They aren't great in comparison to other awesome spanish grocery stores, but will do in a pinch.

Barcelona—lunch or dinner?

The area around Paral.lel is called Poble Sec and yes, Quimet i Quimet is NOT to be missed, even if you weren't staying in the general area. Do a search on this board and you'll see what others have to say.

Foodie In Barcelona [Moved from International board]

Les Quince Nits is actually in the Placa Reial and the stop is Liceu, Catalunya or Jaume I. It is good and inexpensive, true, but the food is less Catalan cuisine and more just international stuff with a few Spanish things thrown in. I'm not discounting the recommendation, however.

7 Portes is great and I'll second the rec on the Pimientos. Great stuff.
