Your best items at Sam's Club

I just have to add my 2 cent's,first of all I belong to Sam's club but only because I have to.Sam's club is 70 miles away from me and the closet Costco is for me 200 miles away but I still make the trip 2 to 3 times a year and load up on all my meats and other needs, Costco gives us the best of products, Sam's could give a shit less. You started this blog Jan 12-2012 and here it is July 16-14 with only 40 some hit's does that not tell you anything??Not to mention they carry no special's during the Holiday's like Costco doe's.

Is the traditional German bakery finished?

ChefJune.
I grew up with Lutz's pastries so sad to hear they've closed but not surprised the last time I was home to Chicago was 6 years ago at that time the family had already sold it,and I could tell the difference in the cakes.
Haven't had any cakes like their's since.

What's best these days in Kansas City BBQ?

A big huge yay for McGonigle's, as for OK Joe's I loved the ribs but cant say much for the brisket did not get a smoke taste out of it nor did I see a smoke ring that also goes for the chicken, plus the brisket on the combo plate was sliced super thin.Dont think I'll be back to OK joe's.But McGonigle's will always be on our list It's that good.

The Great American Sunday Dinner

Even though my Mutti worked she cooked every day of her life,my dad had his saying he would rather put the money on the table than give towards hospital and doctor bills.Which has served me also.
But Sunday's always were special, she'd fix things like German roladen, potatoe dumplings and red cabbage or stuffed cabbage[ the Serbian kind] the list goes on and on,even though I also make these foods now they still aren't as good as my Mom's

Do you love your kitchen faucet?

I also bought the Hansgrue, and am totally happy with it,I will not buy anything from China so I really checked this company out all parts are made in Germany and assempled in Georgia,at least our workers here are getting some of the benifits, plus I got mine on line at Costco, most all the other one's mentioned are made in China a no no for me.
Look for the sale at Costco,I got mine for $149.00 was selling last for $199.00, so you dont need to get the most costly one. Good Luck.

McGonigle's Market for brisket BBQ sanwich, yay or nay??? [KC]

Thank you for the comeback, guess we'll have to try Mcgonigle's in the summer time when we come the next time, you see we will be coming in to Kansas after a 5 hour drive and really would like to relax a bit so we need aplace that we can sit down at.After we leave Trader Joe's we are going straight to overland Park where Costco is.Now I know there are a lot of chains in that area but would like one that does a really good burger [charbroiled preferable]
The next day on our way home we will once again go to the Costco on Linwood blvd to get our perishables. Will we be anywhere in the area where Woody's bbq is?????
P.S dont like Culvers.

White Lily Flour in a Roux

I use white lily flour for a lot of things but not for gravy it has a tendency to dissipate save yourself the trouble and buy some regular flour.

Costco Food Finds - 4th Quarter 2013

If it's the white truffle oil from the Urbani company it's fantastic, Urbani is the top of the line, not all truffle oil's are good,as a user of the oil for manny many years it's the only one to get, plus the price from them is also the tops. When I first started using there oil it cost me almost $45.00 so I consider this a gift.

Should I get a Costco membership?

It is now the right time to join with all the holiday's that are coming up I believe you'll get hooked, I'm sitting here reading all the blogs and totally suffering as my closest Costco is over 2 hundred miles away and I have to wait another month before I make my trip.
I'm only a one person household and I still make these trips as far as I'm concerned Costco walk's on water.
I wanted to tell you that now before the holiday's you'll see a lot of stuff [in the food category] for instance, you'll see those beautiful frenched 8 bone pork roasts [by swifts] only now till the holidays are over then you have to wait till easter before they along with many other products come again, so I usually stock up and freeze them per portion.I also get the steaks have never found a bad one yet and I don't get the prime I find they just have the best flavor.I can go on and on but I believe my fellow chowhounders will tell you more on whats' seasonal. GET THAT CARD.HA_HAAAA

The Costco Thread - new products, old favourites, interesting items

If the scalloped potatoes where in the ones in the fridge, then I for one recommend them thev'e been around for awhile at least since last year thats when I bought them for the holiday's I doctored them up a bit as we like a lot of cheese and tucked the sauce under the tatter's.Saved a lot of time.

Can I use refridgerated pie dough to make Natchitoches meat pies???

I am totally intimidated when it comes to any kind of baking let alone making my own dough for the pies.
I used to make them with the goya discs but am not privvy to them here,no one carries the product, so I thought the store bought pie dough might work or the store bought biscuits, can anyone give me some advice on this????

Cutting board and cross-contamination - Is it a real issue?

I take a small cookie sheet then a small plastic cutting board for all my meats incuding chicken [cutting boards I got at Costco] they came in pack of 3 small med and large, like you I used to spend a fortune at the restaurant supply place these are half the price and I love them. With the cookie sheet It's fast clean up and no contamination.

Toasted Roux in oven.

Thanks for the reply, yes I did have a little more flour just wanted to finish the bag .I really really hate standing and making the roux stovetop takes too long and then I never ever make it dark enough to suit everbody,so since I had my oven on anyhow I thought I might try Alton's recipe and even though it takes a longer time theres no muss or fuss.I also went to the 2 sites you posted thank you, as a matter of fact my Mom used to make his dry flour recipe forgot all about that.

Toasted Roux in oven.

I have alway's been taught equal amounts of oil or grease to equal amount of flour, yet when I read Alton Browns recipe it was 4 oz of oil to 4 oz of flour those 4oz of flour equal to 1 cup of flour which I did but it really came out dry has anyone else done that recipe??? and what did you think of it???and does anyone have a better recipe for toasting in oven????
