May 2012 COTM Spanish Month Companion Thread

Have alway's used almonds in my pesto came out good everytime.
Anyone see a shrimp in green sauce recipe in the spanish book???

Why do you continue shopping at CostCo? I am underwhelmed. What do you appreciate about the warehouse store?

A week before Easter I traveled 270 miles to St,Louis for my Costco fix, I do this 2 to 3 times a year we are not privy to Costco's here in Harrison,Ar, and none in Springfield,Mo, which Sam's Club making sure that they don't build in Springfield, makes our life harder but none the less doe's not stop us from going to Costco.
Anyhow we usually stock up on Kirkland Columbian coffee, steak's plus whatever meat's that look good,we alway's take a cooler,of course the baked chicken usually we buy 3 then freeze some of it,anyhow what I'm getting at the specials they have for the Holidays are fantasic.
On the way home we alway's stop at Sam's to fill up on gas, this time though we decided to go in, to check out the Easter special's TRUST ME not one easter special, even noticed that they raised the price of the chicken by one dollar, don't like their chicken anyhow, just the I'dea though.
You all Don't know how lucky you are to have A Costco near you,as for me lookind forward to my trip to Kansas Costco in July.

Grandma's Stuffed Cabbage Came Out Delish - Here's the Recipe

Have ttried almost all the ways you all do stuffed cabbage, but in the end I wen't back to the way my Dad did it, which is the Serbian way,he sauteed the beef, veal and pork along with the onion's,I did however tweek it a bit by adding thyme and a tablespoon of mustard along of course with the salt and pepper and parsley,at the end of the sauteeing I add the rice put the lid on the mixture and let it cool.Since I no longer am privvy to sour cabbage heads I alternate sour kraut, he always used a lot of smoked meat's used water and several cut up tomatoe's,brought it to a boil then in the oven it went at 350 to 375 for one and a half hour's or more,I usually make my own sauce ,but when being lazy I use spaghetti sauce which I alway's have in my freezer but you can use a good store bought sauce, now my recipe call's for 1 1/2 pounds of meat to 1/3 cup rice.Oh almost forgot since my pocketbook can't afford all the smoked meats, I lay doublesmoked bacon on top of the cabbages, you can also use good smoked polish sausage.

What food find still haunts you - that you had once and haven't found since?

Rascal house is no more, they tore it down, rascal house was on the beach and Wolfies was at 163rd st across from the Mall which also is no more.

Sausage recipes

German and Italian.Tell me do you roast your fennel??It's just that I've been following Lidia's recipe for years, she uses 1 Tablespoon to 6 pounds of pork.

used ground coffee

anyone hear of adding used coffee grinds to the gardening soil?and what is the added benefit if any?

What's Going In Your Garden Now?

needed a good laugh.

Fresh Sardines

Try the seafood market in Miami called Casablanca, hopefully I spelled that right? besides being an awsome market, they have been highly visited by many top chef's and on T.V .
Wish I still lived in Miami it was my place to go to.

It's HOT! Is my sauerkraut in danger???

Not a reply but a question, did you use pickling salt or kosher salt???I remember years ago a friend of my Mom's came to visit, she pickled a whole head of cabbage and used just regular salt, at the time we lived in Miami and you know how hot it gets there it came out perfect.
I also have some sitting on my porch but am worried I used the wrong salt,my first time doing this.

Back to St Louis for shopping trip.

Yes I know Im over due,due to the Easter Holiday, plus having to make extra shopping trip's to Springfield.ha-ha.Not as young as I'd like to be.
My first stop was at the Soulard Farmers market, well I parked at the Jimmy Johns parking lot, forgot the name of the place you recommended,so I asked this man if the B.B.Q next to J.J was the famous B.B.Q restaurant he said It's famous alright but not for food ha-haaa so when I saw 7 soldiers going into the place I knew what he meant,ha-aaaa,you gotta remember I just drove 300 miles.
Thought you might get a kick out of that.
Loved the market but not much going on this time of the year ,which I didn't really expect, but I'm glad I saw It.
Then finally found Bogarts,I got there just at the right time, not much of a wait for me but when I left a heck of a line,I had the pulled reg sandwich with theeee tatter salad and baked beans, glad I got the reg sand as I was only able to eat half, took the other half to my hotel room so had that for late night snack. And yes Bogarts was everything you said it was and then some.
the rest of my time in your city was pretty much uneventful as I had to get my groceries to come home the next day ,my little malteese had to get a little
snip surgery,so I didn't want to be away too long.
Stayed at the Drury Hotel at exit 141 also very nice, then to the hill, went to both Italian makets, but I must say I do still preferr Volpi's then also went to the bakery which is always a must stop for me, plus of course my Costco which never disappoints, after seeing all the holiday specials they carry ,It made me sick to see that Sam's Club carried no specials whatsoever, but alas we have to maintain the card as no Costco in Springfied.
All in all I loved my time in your city, but you all can keep your traffic. ha-aaa.
BEing from Miami origanally I used to be used to that I allways called 95 the foo maan cho trail.ha-haa. thanks again everyone.

Back to St Louis for shopping trip.

Am leaving around 6 a.m. this morning, okay you talked me in to the tater salad.

P.S FOTD.
I read some of your other blogs on Chinese Restaurants and the food, tell me do you check with them as to where they get their seafood from???
I for one dearly love chinese food but cant get a clear answer from our Restaurants here so I stopped going and have learned to cook my own,am curious what you have to say on the matter.[I do not buy seafood from ASIA] gotta be from our waters or Canada. Also good L:uck on your trip to Kansas

Tonifi. You never did say did you go to Eureka Springs yet???Will give report on my trip, won't be going though till the 28th can't hardly wait, FOTD forced me to revise my trip, your Soulard Market just cannot be missed, saw some of the pictures on line, have never seen a market like this.

Back to St Louis for shopping trip.

FOTD.You made me change my plans entirely,Soulard Market now has to be my first stop, plus also Bogarts, from what I've seen on line the Market is awsome and a must see. Will give update when I get back.
Will also check out the hotels you gave me Doug.

COSTCO treasures [Moved from Ontario]

I've said this before but it bears repeating.I worked for a trucking company who also hauled foods for Costco,my company had what they called a country store,so when the stores they hauled for rejected the foods we would sell it to the public, this helped pay for the insurance claims, having said that you have no Idea how particular Costo is,in all the stuff they rejected, I have never found anything wrong with it,and that included the fish, and thay's why I travel twice a year now at 270 miles to the nearest Costco.

Ground Beef at Supermarkets Contains ‘Pink Slime’

Like you I have a machine to grind my meat, but that really is not the point,If you and I went to the store and ate a donut without paying for it they'd be able to arrest us for stealing,so by them adding that junk to only 30 percent of the meat isn't that also stealing??? from us the public.

Ground Beef at Supermarkets Contains ‘Pink Slime’

besides going back to abc new's as they have upgraded their report, you should also go to www.huffingtonpost.com

Pink Slime in our ground hamburger meat.

I urge you all to go to a.b.c news with Diane Sawyer she ran a special on what is being ground up along with the beef that they have been selling us for hamburger meat, really really bad.
as for me, I'm going back to using my meat grinder, which I'm lucky to have .
But it makes me wonder what else this is being used for,for instance the sausages we buy or the burgers we buy at fast food places, which I have been wondering about for along time, specially
with the coupons these fast food places send out .

Sausage recipes

For one pound of pork 3/4 teaspoon of fennel is just a wee too much,it just over powers pork ,you know Italian sausages are made also without fennel.

Back to St Louis for shopping trip.

Sorry for not getting back sooner, not laughing,ha-ha as i also was thinking of one day taking the ghost tour just need to talk some friends into coming with me,but that will be after my trip to your city, which won't be till the 28th of this month, I want to be privy to some of the Holiday specials that Costco has around then.
Can't hardly help you on the Dining have gone to so many awful places for food that I totally have given up,but do have 2 that I really recommend, one is Lamert's Cafe in Ozark,Mo www.throwedrolls.com this place has been in several magazine's and on one of the cooking channels, don't remember which, food is huge don't pay attention when you go to their site about not being able to take doggy bags (not so) I never can finish my meal Ialways get the fried pork chops delish.
The other place is on the outskirts of Branson called Chateau On The Lake,www.chateauonthelake.com pictures really don't do it justice,we go for the Sunday brunch $30.00 not cheap but very good, but you dont have to go for brunch you can just park your car go in do your own little touring they have a sweet shop very reasonable ,downstairs one can get variable things at also good prices.I highly recommend going even if it takes you a little out of the but not much. You will relly enjoy Eureka springs can't help you out food wise but I hear that there arre many good restaurants, just do't go to De Vitos we have one here very overated they are know for their trout, even though the trout is good other food blah, once I orderd fried shrimp,I'm almost sure they bought frozen heavy on the breading, but enoughof that.do let us know of your trip and experience.Enjoy and thank you for your help along with everyone else.

Back to St Louis for shopping trip.

Am so glad you mentioned DeGragarios have been wanting to try them,I think when I was at the hill they weren't open,I go to Volpi's mainly for the Italian sausage without the fennel seeds [do not like them] they do not exist here in Harrison nor Springfield,so I load up at volpi's,in your opinion are they better at DeGragarios???and do they have Mortadella lunch meat don't care for the one at Volpi, tell me what else they carry in the meat catagory?? I always go to the Missouri Bakery. Have also been to Adriana's good sand's.Do you think It's worth my while to go to Soulard's Farmers Market at this time of the year.???? Oh yes do you know if DEGragarios cry-vacs??

Back to St Louis for shopping trip.

Thank you for getting back to me, yes I'm the one coming from Harrison,Ar.Will make reservation's were you suggested.
we will also go to the restaurants you recommended FriendOfTheDevil that you gave me on my last trip.I know Costco is a year and a half old but still new to me ha-haa.Can't wait to get to your city for we are really food challenged here.

Back to St Louis for shopping trip.

Have been to your city several times but don't really know my way around or what different areas are called have managed to find all my stores with the help of my G.P.S,here are the places I'm going to Volpi's G&W Meat market, then on to the new Costco, plus to the new trader Joe's,what I'm needing to know is what is the new Costco area called??as I want to make Motel reservation's in that part of town.thanks .

Costco food finds - 1st quarter 2012 [old]

either way I believe I answerd the question, but to add on,I have oyster's shipped to me from Joe Patti seafood, not on the shell mind you but in large plastic containers, I then put them in smaller containers and freeze them for when I need them, where Iive in Arkansas we are not privy to oysters except for holidays.Never had a problem use them for everything including frying them.

Costco Easter Food specials.

Sadly I am not privy to a Costco anymore so twice a year I travel to either Kansas city or St Louis to load up on my food's. This year I'm going to ST Louis which is a 270 mile trip for me,will be going to the newer Costco spending the night in one of the motels in that area, was not able to go for the Christmas holiday's but went the year before that, picked up several of the bone in Swift's roast porks, so tell me for those of you who remember will I be able to find those for Easter, did read on a previous blog about the cheeses and am looking forward to that, how about the Kiolbassa sausages???please tell me what else I might find that only comes for special Holyday's. Thank you ahead of time.
