rhubarb yet?

Has anyone spotted it in farmers' markets yet? Or Rainbow?

Olive sandwich in Casablanca

When I was in Casablanca a month ago, I ate a street sandwich made with chopped olives, carrots and "spices." I'm trying to recreate the sandwich. Aside from olive oil and cumin, does anyone know what the spices might be?

Thanks!

how long can jarred fruit last?

Hello:

I have a bottle of raisins jarred in alcohol and a bottle of chestnuts in alcohol. I bought them about two years ago from an Italian deli and am wondering if they are still okay to eat...I'm thinking the alcohol asks as a preservant but want to be sure. Strangely I can't find out any info on commerically jarred fruit storage.

Thanks for any advice!

ISI twist'n'sparkle

Has anyone used non-ISI chargers with the twist'n'sparkle? How did they work out? COuld you tell the difference?

Thanks for any info!

restaurant near Lumiere Theater

I'm looking for a restaurant near the Lumiere Theater on California Street in SF. Nothing fancy but cozy and good place before or after a movie. We're open to any kind of food, just looking for neighborhood favorites in a neighborhood we don't know well. Thanks for any recs you might offer!

Tried Nigella Lawson's Chocolate Guinness Cake?

I made for a beer-based dinner for a friend, and it was a huge hit. Mine came out looking exactly like Nigella's and I am no frosting artist. But my new favorite from Feast is the chocolate gingerbread (made without the chocolate chips and with 1/4 teaspoon allspice in addition to the other spices.

looking for flats of tomatoes

Venturing into canning before the end of tomato season, and wondering if any of you 'hounds could give tips about buying flats of tomatoes directly from a farm. I don't belong to a CSA but am wondering if any of you who do know if the farms sell to outside people?

Thanks!

Sherry or white wine cake recipes?

Thank you both for those suggestions--I will be following up on them.

Sherry or white wine cake recipes?

I'm thinking about a bundt or loaf type cake that uses sherry or white wine for flavoring. All the recipes online seem to have pudding mix in them, and I'm not going there.

Any recipes people can point me to? Or hints as to how to create a new recipe? I'm a pretty confident baker.

Thank you!

Looking for Beefeater Summer Gin in SF

Thank you! Cask is a great suggestion, and I've never been to Ledger's. It might be time for a field trip.

Looking for Beefeater Summer Gin in SF

I've tried BevMo and KL, and will try Plumpjack. But has anyone actually seen it for sale in San Francisco?

searching for bendicks bittermints

I'm hoping to buy locally rather than on-line. Has anyone seen bittermints sold in the Bay Area? I don't think the British Grocery in the Portrero has them.

Thanks for any tips!

Amarena Fabbri Cherries

I think Lucca on Valencia and 22nd has them. Bi-Rite might as well.

Soundcheck for Mission/adjacent restos

Parents are taking us out for a celebration dinner, and because of babysitter issues, we need to stay in Mission-ish neighborhood. The parents have requested a restaurant where we can hear each other. I need a Chowhound noise check since I don't really notice it. (except for one time at Maverick when my eardrums almost exploded.)

These are the places we're thinking about....what's the noise level for you?
Range
Delfina
Bar Tartine
Bar Bambino
Incanto
Serpentine

We're open to other suggestions too.

Thank you.

Trip tips for Three Days in Portland

We're visiting Portland for three days in July, and hoping for a food focused vacation. I think I have some good ideas for higher end restaurants, but was hoping for tips about other kinds of food finds (bakeries, cafes with great food, cocktail spots). Stuff that locals know but I have no clue about...

Also, we're open to staying anywhere in Portland. We love walking and public transportation but will have a car. Any suggestions for neighborhoods or hotels? We live in the Mission in San Francisco and are pretty comfortable with any urban experience.

Thanks so much.

Benedictine in San Francisco

Thanks to everyone for the helpful suggestions. Clearly I have to go investigate some new shops in SF.

Benedictine in San Francisco

My local (and excellent) shop doesn't carry Benedictine--and when I went on line BEvMo looked like it carried B&B under the name of Benedictine.

Is there a liquor shop in SF that carries it?

Thanks.

Have You Seen "King Corn" yet? [Moved from Manhattan board]

Thank you so much--this was the kind of helpful information I'd hoped to find. My son's class has done some thinking about sustatinable eating, and I'm taking him and any kid who wants to go. Apparently An Inconvenient Truth is a big movie for them, so maybe they're wise to the ways of documentary.

Have You Seen "King Corn" yet? [Moved from Manhattan board]

"King Corn" hasn't opened in San Francisco yet, but I was hoping to take a group of eleven year olds to see it. I don't know all the kids that well, and so am a bit worried about any kind of slaughter scenes. I know the feedlot scenes are disturbing (as they should be) but is there anything I should know about before going to the fllm?

Thanks!

SF - Bi-Rite Creamery update - Chocolate olive oil sundae with Malden salt, popsicles & the best ginger ice cream ever

ginger ice cream with their homemade caramel sauce is one of the great flavor combinations!

Mission Pie Open

Once again, I just have to say how much I love this place.

The coffee is great. I think the sweet scones are my favorite in the city, and my son had a slice of such good banana-cream pie that I was tempted to buy a whole one to bring home.

Right now there's a table with all the fixings to make valentines. Need I say more?

Mission Pie Open

The Mission kids work in the shop after school and on weekends --but I think there's only five of them so far.

Mission Pie Open

I had the apple pie--great flaky crust and big chunks of tart apples. The tart I wanted to try but had no buy-in form my crew was an Italian dessert tart made with chard, raisins, rum and lemon.

I'm thinking pie for breakfast on my way to work!

Mission Pie Open

A great new cafe and pie shop opened at 25th and Mission: Mission Pie. It's a pretty, cosy spot with a selection of three kinds of organic, fair-trade coffee, a nice variety of teas, and pumpkin, apple and walnut pies as well as pastries and organic fruit and juice.

The great thing about this place--other than being a great place to stop in for coffee on your way to BART in the morning--is that it's a venture started by the Pie Ranch folks. Pie Ranch is a farm dedicated not only to sustainable agriculture, but also to "inspire youth to transform their relationships to food, and to work with their communities in building healthier local food systems."

The pies are made with ingredients from the ranch, the workers are Mission High students who have been working on the farm, and while I sound like a PR flack, I'm not connected to the place in any way. I just had a great cup of coffee and a slice of pie this afternoon, and wanted to encourage Hounds in the neighborhood to stop in.

So, did Bi-Rite Creamery open on Dec 1st as promised?

The Bi-Rite Creamery officially opened today (December 16) at 11 am. The ice cream is wonderful--I had the salted caramel and added a spiced pecan topping. The life-partner had a macaroon and dark chocolate ice cream sandwich, and widget #1 had the deepest, darkest chocolate brownie sundae imaginable. The ice cream is lighter and more flavorful than ice cream at Mitchell's. It tasted like something right until the end. I can't wait to try the coffee-toffee. Oh, and Sam's Sundae: chocolate ice cream with Bergaot olive oil, sea salt, and whipped cream. We are unabashed Bi-Rite fans, but even so, I think the ice cream is something special. Oh, and it's a pretty, warm place without the dopey pretension of a place like Sketch in Berkeley.

Canyon Market

Does anyone know when the Canyon Market is opening in Glen Park? (I think it's called Canyon Market) Or anything else about it?
