Cheap Eats for Lunch Near Union Square

Distance is a non-issue. We have about an hour and a half and transportation.

Cheap Eats for Lunch Near Union Square

We're going to be working a couple blocks from Union Square...which is short enough of a distance to traverse for lunch.

I'm going to SF for business tomorrow and I'd like to get some suggestions for relatively quick and cheap lunch spots (i.e.

We're a group of 6 associates with no picky eaters but only one real food lover (me... !)

Any help? I'm completely and utterly unfamiliar with the area.

THANKS!

Neomeze in Pasadena

Anyone been?

The food and ambience look pretty enticing from what I can tell on the website.

Any informed opinions on this one?

Thanks!

Could it be panna cotta?

ISO nice lunch spot in SGV to treat family friend.

I have a particular affinity for people who include links. Thank you!

ISO nice lunch spot in SGV to treat family friend.

My mom and I are taking our very lovely neighbor out for lunch in the San Gabriel Valley. I’d prefer to stay in/around Pasadena but anywhere worthy in area would be great.

She took my mom to the Scarlet Tea Room a few weeks back, and we’d like to return the gesture in kind.

Parameters:

Lunch or brunch
$25/per person max
No Chinese/sushi/dim sum

Any ideas from the ever-wise chowhounders out there?

Thanks!

ISO fun, must-try Las Vegas restaurant to celebrate 24th birthday!

Dave -

I am from LA! Thanks so much for the tip! I think I'll hit up Pie 'n Burger after work tonight...I've always passed by the place but never stopped. Is this a generally decent place all around?

LAS VEGAS [moved from L.A. board]

icecreamstar, I think you're going to have to get a bit more specific with your parameters. "Splurge" means many things to many people. What cuisine do you like? Wait service or buffet? You'll get much more useful advice if you get specific! :)

kjs - Thanks so much for the input. As much as I'd love to do Japanese two nights in a row, I think it would be a limiting move. We're going to Okada the next evening, which I hear has the best sushi in town. It's too bad, because those places you mentioned seem to have a great scene. *sigh* maybe next time?

Ok why do fried clams with pickles sound so incredibly delicious?!

Yes, suebro, after much research I've found that there apparently are 3 distinct areas within FIX - the bar, the lounge, and the restaurant. The bar and lounge take walk-in's while if you make a reservation, they seat you in the restaurant.

I'm sure it's sufficiently loud and upbeat even in the reservations-only restaurant area.

Everyone's input is so helpful! Thanks, you guys!

I just made a reservation at FIX, and they assured me I'd be seated in the restaurant as opposed to the bar/lounge adjacent to the casino.

I'm really excited, considering one of my girlfriend's favorite foods is mac & cheese; and I read that FIX has an excellent version of it!

I love being able to go to my fellow chow hounds for excellent, timely advice. Thanks again!

Hmmm Simon or FIX?

Reviews of Emeril's restaraunts are always mixed. I'm not particularly enamored of him as TV personality, but it's the infamous banana cream pie that is luring me in.

Would you say $100 is more feasible? 2 of us will have a drink and 1 will abstain. Dessert will be shared. So it would be a first course and entree for each followed by a shared dessert.

My friend and I will be going out to dinner to celebrate our 24th birthdays and I have no idea where to start! We’ll be doing Okada (at the Wynn) with a larger group on Saturday night, but are in search of a good spot to celebrate on Friday.

There will be three people in our party and we’re all young and overly energetic girls so my fear is going someplace with incredible food but a STUFFY atmosphere. I’m ISO a fun, young atmosphere that can still feel like fine dining.

Ideally I’d like a place with delicious food that can make both a FOODIE (me) and a couple of PICKY EATERS happy.

My budget is fairly limited - $75/per person including drinks.

Places I’m curious about include any of Michael Mina’s spots, Emeril’s NO Fish House, etc.

Please help! I’d like to reserve within the next couple days.

Thank you!

P.s. We'll be staying at Caesar's - although we're not limited since we'll have limo transportation around town - I'd like to keep it close. Even at Caesar's if that's possible. Already been to Mesa Grill so that's out!

Take Home Chef

I was on this show in its first season. It was one of the most entertaining days of my life filming that episode.

A couple of key points:

1. Although being approached to do the show is certainly shocking, the "surprise approach" is definitely staged. One of the producers scouted me while I was shopping for a couple snacks to take up to the office and asked if I'd do it. TWO DAYS later we were in production.

2. The Exec producer discussed the premise of the show extensively with me, and an integral part of the concept is the "sexual tension" between chosen housewife and sexy Curtis. Thankfully, I am not a desperate housewife. Instead they made an exception and allowed my single self to cook for a friend.

3. Even though the early hubby arrival times seem suspect, that final "surprise" is actually completely real. And nerve wracking.

4. The food Curtis makes, although pretty simple, is incredibly delcious. He knows what he's doing and can definitely turn ordinary ingredients into something special.

I was a part of the 7th episode and now they are well into their 3rd season... The production team was an absolute blast to work with, good people, and they deserve to have all our Chowhound support. Watch it!

I think its Dots Cupcakes (Pasadena)

Red Velvet is not their stand out.

Apple Pie is a spicy, yummy, unusual flavor.

And Pina Colada is incredible with a moist pineapple flavored cake topped with a generous amount of fresh toasted coconut.

iluvcake, I agree the place is super cute.

Date Night w/a PICKY EATER in/around Santa Monica

Foodseeker, good thing I'm planning two weeks in advance!

Question to all: How are portion sizes at the aforementioned spots? We're both definitely small portion averse.

Date Night w/a PICKY EATER in/around Santa Monica

Macrogal, Violet's menu looks pretty promising. A couple good beef dishes (steak, short ribs) and the price point is lower than expected. Plus, the ambience (from what I can tell on the website) seems slightly more inviting than Nook or Axe which strike me as pretty stark.

Hmmm...decisions, decisions.

Date Night w/a PICKY EATER in/around Santa Monica

Great suggestion, Ernie!

The menu looks safe enough for him, yet interesting enough for me...and it's right down the street from his place. So the convenience factor is high.

How's the ambience?

GELATO in/around Santa Monica

I can't imagine throwing out dessert...that bad huh? :)

Date Night w/a PICKY EATER in/around Santa Monica

Wow, Musha sounds pretty good. Cheesy risotto seems to have the perfect combination of starch and cheese to keep him happy!

In terms of how picky he is. No spicy foods. His fish tolerance maxes out (and incidentally starts at) shrimp. He's accepting of new flavors but tends to steer clear of vegetables; more of a meat and potatoes type of guy. In short, he is a victim of his former frat boy/bachelor/football and beer lifestyle.

GELATO in/around Santa Monica

That's my qualm with most gelato places...artificial tasting flavors...How do these places in BH stack up to Tutti Gelati?

GELATO in/around Santa Monica

Angelato possibly?

GELATO in/around Santa Monica

I live in Pasadena and have no idea where to start in terms of Gelato on the West side.

Any suggestions?

San Diego to Pasadena

IMO La Luna Negra is TERRIBLE. Sangria tastes like it was made in their kitchen sink and every single dish is way, way, way over SALTED.

Also, Restaurant Halie no longer exists.

I would go for Red White & Bluezz. Great ambience, food, and wine selection.

Date Night w/a PICKY EATER in/around Santa Monica

My guy's guy, very non-foodie boyfriend has finally agreed to let me plan a Friday night out for us.

He lives in Santa Monica, so I'd like to take him out in the area for dinner, etc.

Any suggestions to expand my picky eater's horizons in a psuedo adventurous way for less than $30 per person?

My initial thought was someplace like Luna Park....

Also, any GELATO faves in the area? I live in Pasadena, so I'm a Tutti Gelati fan...but not sure where I could take him in his neck of the woods?

I think its Dots Cupcakes (Pasadena)

So I have to be honest, the first time I tried this place (see post above) I wasn't impressed at all. The cake itself was dry, the frosting wasn't creamy, almost brittle.

I gave it another shot this afternoon and wisely only picked up ONE. Devil's Food with a whipped cream frosting. It was SO GOOD! The cake was rich, not too sweet at all.

I noticed that Hailey now pipes the frosting, which provides for a much better presentation than the initial half dozen I tried.

Highly, highly recommend Dots. Dare I say, even more so than Violet's?
