Anything Good in Gainesville?

I have had some good meals at Emiliano's. The 43rd st deli does a nice breakfast. I was disappointed in chopstix and unimpressed by Mildred's. Thought the menu there read well, but preparation was lackluster.
Looking forward to trying the Paramount.

I-10 east of tallahassee

Will be going back and forth across the state and have found suggestions for Tallahassee and west. Any places in Lake City and east before Jacksonville? Breakfast and lunch spots in Lake City would be helpful. Any food typeis appreciated, would prefer to skip chains, dives are fine.
Thanks,
Jane

Best restaurants in DeLand or Volusia

Another vote for Spanish River Grill. In DeLand, the Thai place on Woodland Blvd next to firehouse subs (used to be Mr. Phad Thai) is under new management in the last year and is excellent. Emmy's is especially good when they have German day, this coming Sunday the 19th is this month's. Havana Cuba is good, better at dinner than lunch usually. A fun place to go for a burger is skydive Deland, the skydivers land right next to the dinning area. Mi Mexico, also in DeLand, has an excellent chile verde and good beans, not so crazy about other items. Sunrise fish camp is great for crabs only, call ahead to be sure they have them.

Sarasota area-Good local restaurants?

I'm only an occasional visitor, but there are some unusual spots I like. One is Yoders, Amish or Mennonite owned, great pies, good breakfasts, haven't tried anything else yet. The Waffle Stop, Elvis decor, is another good breakfast. Have not been in years but Primo Restaurant, wood burning oven, near airport, used to be good Italian. Let us know what else you find, I'm going that way next month.

pommes frites

Second the Le Bon suggestion. Took a group of students there during Art Basel (thanks to the suggestions here), and found it offered reasonable prices (esp. during early bird hours), good service, lovely mussels (the second best next to those I've had in Belgium, the first best being at Carrabas in Daytona Beach), my favorite Belgian beer (Chimay Rouge) and nice, if not great, fries.

New Smyrna Beach Restaurants

The best thing at JB's is the setting, watching a sunset over mosquito lagoon, having some p&es, and a nice cold beer can't be beat. The fried shrimp are pretty good as well.
My favorite spot in NSB is Spanish River Grill, haven't found anything I didn't think was, at the least very good, right on up to excellent. I think the best thing Norwoods has going for it is their wine list, food ranges from bad to acceptable, but have never had anything better than that. There is a seafood market/gift shop/ cafe called Ocean"s Catch on whatever street 44 becomes when it crosses the intercoastal that has the best marinated mussels you'll ever put in your mouth, good smoked fish, great blackened shrimp ceasar salad, and 0 for atmosphere, but get it to go, and picnic on the beach.

Anything newish in St. Aug ?

I haven't been there yet, but have heard that The Old City House B&B now does dinners as well as breakfasts, and is very good. I think it has a web site.
Also heard the restaurant in Casa Monica is good.
If you want a good gyro, try Theo's on King Street. The spanakopita and the cinnamon rolls are tasty too. If you are into vegan, The Manatee Cafe is good. If you find anything great, let us know.

Collards. Length of time needed to cook.

It would be a vegetable portion served with ham, pork or chicken, or could be part of a vegetable meal with black-eyed peas, cornbread, and pickled peaches.

Collards. Length of time needed to cook.

Another southern opinion: cook the seasoning meat , I prefer ham hocks in water with some onions and garlic you have sauteed until soft. Cook until meat is tender- about 2 hours for ham hocks, then add chopped collards and dried pepper flakes. Cook only until collards are tender, which can be 30 minutes up to an hour or 2. As soon as they are tender, they are ready to be eaten with some cornbread and a little pepper sauce.

TOP MEXICAN IN FLA

El Rancho in DeLand is good, especially the tacos al pastor. The best local spot for tacos only, that's all that's served except for the specials (I think Fridays are bierra (sp?), Saturdays pozole and Sunday is munedo), is a little taco wagon that sets up on the corner of 15A, aka the truck route, aka Spring Garden. They are only open those three days. There is sometimes one table and a couple of chairs in the parking lot, otherwise you eat in your car or take it out. It's very basic, but very tasty.

Art Basel with college students

My husband and I will be in Miami for three days for art Basel and will be spending part of that time with some of his art students. I'm looking for suggestions for inexpensive (for them) but interesting(for me)restaurants. Need 2 breakfast spots, 3 lunch spots and 2 dinners(just the two of us, so can be a little more upscale). Would prefer places near the convention center, design district, Winwood area, and Bal Harbour area (we're staying there). Would like at least one Cuban place, other ethnic places would be great, if possible, I like places with a history.
All these requests may not be possible to meet in one spot, but maybe some. Thanks in advance for any help.

Daytona report and wish list (long)

In NSB try the Spanish River Grill. Everything I've had has been very good, especially the flatiron steak. IMHO, Karlings is no longer very good. It eas up and down for acouple of years but then was consistently down. Have quit going there.
In DeLand, at Le Jardin Cafe on Indiana, there is a guest chef cooking a couple of nights a week. This week he is doing North African. He's great with any cuisine, check their web site.

ANY CRAB SHACKS OR GOOD CHINESE IN VOLUSIA COUNTY?

Thanks, triplesajk, I'll try the chowder.
As for Chinese, the best I've found in West Volusia is in Orange City, Jade Garden on 17-92. The salt and pepper shrimp are good, as are the dumplings which they usually run out of by the weekend.

ANY CRAB SHACKS OR GOOD CHINESE IN VOLUSIA COUNTY?

Try sunshine fish camp off Hontoon road just west of DeLand. The only thing to get there is the crabs. You call ahead, let them know how many you want and they have them cleaned and ready for you, served in a big plastic dish tub. I haven't been there in a couple years, but they've always been good in the past.

is there german food in florida???

The place is west of Deland, called Emmy's Time Out Tavern, on Old New York Avenue. They have some German food on the menu all the time, but the time to go is once a month when they have German Day. November's is this coming Sunday, there will be a band, polka dancing, a fixed menu, usually can choose from 3 or 4 entries, sides, etc.
