Ceviche in RI

We had lunch yesterday at Agaves in Warwick. While we were sitting there enjoying our Margaritas, I noticed that their brunch menu includes scallop and shrimp ceviche.

L'Elizabeth's in Providence

Well, it probably is cheaper and easier than going to NYC for the same treatment. Quicker, too.

Bob's Red Mill Low Carb Baking Mix in CT

chrystal,

Best post I've ever seen on CH. You have a great way with words. Keep up the good work.

My Time In Newport ( where I ate for 48 hours)

Just to clarify, what you saw at the beach was not red tide, just red algae that are normal and harmless, just a bit annoying when you want to swim in clear water.

Oh, thanks for the tip on Gary's Handy Lunch. I'll try to remember to try their breakfast after Labor Day.

Best Breakfast in Providence (or close by) RI

The best home fries I have had were at Phil's in Wakefield, but that was back in the '80s. I continue to search, but I haven't found anything to compare to the home fries that Steve used to make before he bailed out to Florida.

Loie Fuller, Providence--Not Ready for Prime Time

Gail Ciampa's column in the 12/2 Projo mentioned that the first owner sold Loie Fuller's to Eric Wolf. I met Eric some months ago via our common interest in Diesel Land Rovers when I was taking my oldest Portuguese Water Dog to the nearby Healing Paws for physical therapy after a spinal injury. I'm still looking forward to my first Loie Fuller experience.

Iron Wok: Bad News/Good News

Yes. I'm partial to their twice cooked pork, Chinese style.

Iron Wok: Bad News/Good News

Bad News: I was in Seekonk last night and stopped at Iron Wok for some take-out. The sign on the door said they have closed.

Good News: The sign also said they are moving to 83 Benevolent Street in Providence. Should be open by the end of September.

1854 and Pietra at the Stone House Little Compton RI

They say that they are aiming at a Sept. 1 opening for 1854.

Barritt's Ginger Beer in R.I. or S.E. Mass?

Barritt's is okay, but I (and many others) say the best is D&G. The most reliable source I have found is one Shaw's store in New Bedford. It's the store just off 140 at Exit 4, the same shopping center where the DMV and Savers are.

Biscuits & Sausage Gravy...where?

This morning I made the journey to New London to try Kamp Dog's "Boat." Big disappointment, because the B&G Boat is only available on Friday and Saturday, and today is Thursday. My chances of getting to Kamp Dog on a Friday or Saturday are slim to none, so I guess somebody else will have to report.

Please help!! Need a good place to eat near New London ferry

If you like Mexican, Zavala is about as close as you can get to the ferry.

Biscuits & Sausage Gravy...where?

Kamp Dog has "Sausage Gravy in a Biscuit Boat." Sounds like I might have to try it.

If you like Indian, you could try Mirch Massala on 184 in Groton.

Looking for something offal in Southeastern CT or RI

I haven't seen this sort of thing there, but you might try calling Westerly Meat Packing to see if they can point you in the right direction. (401) 596-4340

New Brazilian Restaurant in Rhode Island

Today I was driving up Route 2 in Warwick and noticed a "Grand Opening" sign at the former Denny's near Lowe's. It's a Brazilian restaurant. Has anyone here tried it yet?

I like Old Tymes in Norwich. Never tried the buffet at Mohegan Sun.

Great little restaurant between Mystic, Ct and Westerly, RI

I stopped in there for lunch today. I broke one of my cardinal rules, which is to avoid the lunch hour like the plague, and I hit the place about 1:00. Every table was occupied, but I ordered, knowing I could zip home with my burger and fries and have a cold beer. As luck would have it, a table was cleared just as my order came out, so I ate there.

The Baja Burger (Monterrey Jack, salsa, and jalapenos) was more done than I like (rare), but that's the way they usually come these days, and I failed to request otherwise. Not a bad burger, even a little juicy, but next time I'll try to remember to ask for it just beyond mooing. The fries are hand cut, not at all like the usual fare, and they were tasty.

While I was standing there waiting for my order, I had a chance to count seats. I came up with a total of 24, though I don't claim to be the most accurate person in the world when it comes to counting.

Would I go there on a Friday night with three young kids? Not on a bet! Seriously, I would guess, judging by the lunch crowd, that you would have a hard time squeezing in on a Friday night. It's not the sort of place you shouldn't go with kids (after all, it is a hot dog and burger place), but I would be inclined to try it (with or without kids) at a quieter time.

Dog Watch, Stonington, CT

I didn't really pay attention to prices, but two of us had appetizer/soup, two drinks apiece, dessert, and coffee with our dinner, ant the check came to $87.xx. I did notice that generic gin & tonic was $5.00, and Gosling's & coke was $5.50.

I had a special dinner, blackened NY sirloin with a cheesy (Roquefort?) sauce. Delicious. It was served with a vegetable medley and mashed potatoes, good but not spectacular.

My wife had a shrinp scampi sort of thing. She thought it looked dry, but it turned out to be "perfect," not loaded with garlic, and the rice was just right.

Appetizer/soup: I had the chicken poblano soup (also a special, I think), which was very tasty. I got to help with the buffalo wings (waitress recommended mildly hot rather than hot). I don't usually eat buffalo wings, but they tasted good to me. Lots of sauce -- don't know if that's typical of buffalo wings, but it worked for me.

Dessert: We split two desserts -- Death by chocolate and Key lime pie. I'm a chocoholic, but I preferred the pie, which was on the rich side.

Take Exit 91 off I-95 south toward Stonington Boro. Dog Watch is on your right as you drive over the bridge going into the boro. Make a sharp right at the end of the bridge.

They don't take reservations. We went on a Thursday night and felt lucky to get seated right away. Live entertainment Friday and Saturday, I think.

Dog Watch, Stonington, CT

Just back from our maiden voyage to Dog Watch, a new restaurant in Stonington, CT. It appears to have all the makings of a winner: fantastic location on the water with beautiful sunsets (Dodson's Boat Yard), tasty food, and it was packed.
