I would agree with the Ridge zin---especially the Ponzo (in fact, I had it last night).

Also, for reds Pinots from the Russian River valley are always a good bet. The Olivet Lane Pinot from there is a steal at about $25

Thanks for your request Dave. My friend is a little on the conservative side, so no sketchy areas or food that is too adventurous. They might have a drink or two but are not big drinkers on the whole. Hope this helps

Curing olives

Hi, I have read some of the past posts re curing olives but I need less discussion and just a good basic recipe using salt not lye. I am planning on buying the green ones this weekend at the farmers market and I feel like I need to get curing as I want to make some for holiday gifts. Thanks for the input.

I would say delfina, which is very "San Francisco" and delicious. If you get there early enough you can sit at the bar where they have a great wine list. And definitely get the fennel encrusted fennel
