Another "Please Critique My Weekend Itinerary" Thread

Thanks for the feedback. I'm hemming and hawing over Sunday night's dinner. If not Lüke, then maybe (based on what's left on OpenTable):

Coquette
Cafe Amelie
Sylvain
Muriel's

(Dante's is booked and Brigtsen's is closed on Sundays)

Dessert miracle on 35th Street (Astoria)

I went into this new tiny place yesterday and tried the plain, almond and chocolate croissants (not all at once, haha) and immediately thought of Cannelle...thrilled to know that Cannelle is now more easily accessible! No more begging friends with cars to make pilgrimages. :)

I believe the place is called Pistache or Pastiche or something like that.

Will also try Noisette, thanks for the rec!

Another "Please Critique My Weekend Itinerary" Thread

First-time visitor to New Orleans from NYC during May 11-14 (staying at the Roosevelt). I've scoured other threads and have definitely been able to tweak my own choices based on the advice already provided, but I would love a quick eyeballin' of what I've got so far. I am traveling with one other person (originally from SFO), we have no dietary restrictions, and we both want a balance of local classics and modern takes. We both love discovering unique, hidden treasures but appreciate the flair of established places worth the $. For drinks (both refined and divey) we're keen to try Cure, One Eyed Jacks, Lafitte, Carousel, Country Club, Flanagans, d.b.a., etc.

Friday night: drinks at Sazerac, dinner at Arnaud's, explore the FQ

Saturday brunch: Commander's Palace
Saturday dinner: Herbsaint

Sunday: swamp tour in the morning; brunch at La Petite Grocery
Sunday dinner: Lüke

Monday lunch: Cochon

Based on the typical portion sizes unique to NOLA, I've left the afternoons open for neighborhood exploring, either by foot, cable car or rented bicycle (we are not renting a car). If hunger strikes, I'm hoping we can just waltz into the likes of Acme, Cafe Du Monde, The Joint, etc. for snacking. I understand it's a short amount of time to get everything in, but I am looking at this as an "intro" trip and plan to return for a longer stay at another time in the future.

Thanks!

Empellon Cocina Review

I was equally impressed with their guac and will probably alter my own recipe to include pistachios going forward. But for $12...I may return just for that, with drinks at the bar, and save my Mexican cravings for the outer boroughs.

Best vegetarian crab cakes

I've not tried Viet Cafe, but perhaps the "crab" rangoon from Soy and Sake would satisfy?

Almond croissant at Cannelle is.............

It is a truly ethereal experience! As is the passion guava danish...but yeah, the almond croissant is ALL THAT... :)

Best Lebanese NYC

And if you're willing to schlep to Queens, Wafa's is amazing.

What's best outer borough (Peruvian) ceviche now?

I really enjoyed Tu Casa in Kew Gardens, though it looks like they also have a location in Astoria. Great ceviche ("Ceviche Micto") and delicious sangria to boot.

Their "Papa a la Huancaina" however was tasteless...

Where would you go for the best SANGRIA?

Preferably in Queens, but Brooklyn works, too.

I saw mention of an apple rum "sangria" at Arepas Cafe (though it's not listed on their online menu), but I'm mostly looking for red sangria that's worth traveling for. Food is secondary for this particular quest, but good eats don't hurt the cause.

Thanks in advance!

Any dairy-free "ice cream" in Brooklyn?

Scoops has long served delicious vegan ice cream; once the dessert destination after dining at nearby Veggie Castle, which is now located in the Richmond Hill (Queens) as Veggie Castle II.

Scoops is located at 624 Flatbush Avenue.

Brunch at Lazy Ox Canteen? Talk to me...

Went there today for brunch. Without a reservation, it was an hour wait for a table for four. The hostess was curt and mostly unpleasant; the kind of attitude you get when someone feels like they're doing you a favor by doing their job, but that's a thankless job.

We shared about 5-6 dishes off the brunch menu and enjoyed most of them. The barley with feta was cool, refreshing and tasty. The shelled fava beans were a sleeper hit; chock full of flavor and tossed with thinly sliced garlic. The soft scrambled eggs were just that, and the omelette was forgettable. The grilled cabbage was hearty and delicious, and the yellow tail crudo was tangy and scrumptious.

Service was abysmal, with the water guy being the saving grace. As a visitor from NYC, this place reminded me of the hip spots you'd find around SoHo, which I never frequent, and with that kind of service, it wouldn't last very long. I was at the Lazy Ox for brunch today because that's where the other three were already planning on going, but it was not memorable enough for me to make sure it's on my list next time I visit.

NEED VEGAN RESTAURANT ON WESTSIDE

Second Shojin. An impressive array of 100% creative, vegan Japanese cuisine. It's on the small side, but if you call ahead, they'll have a table ready for you. It's located in a mall, so you may not feel like you're destined for greatness while taking the escalator up a level, but the chef is friendly and attentive and the food equally worthwhile.

Buddhist Veg Restaurants in Flushing

Responding to JFores, re: Happy Buddha:

Most times I'm in there, it's packed with Asian clientele. The owners are a married couple and the wife once gave me a tour of the building, which includes a Buddhist temple. Since I have only been there in the last couple of years, I have no past visits to compare the quality to, but I agree with other posters that it would be nice to find more Buddhist vegetarian food in NYC.

And to mrsdebdav, re: parking at Happy Buddha:

I don't remember it being marked clearly, but it is directly to the right of the restaurant, a steep entrance to a below-street-level parking area.

Buddhist Veg Restaurants in Flushing

Of the two, Happy Buddha is friendlier and qualitatively better, though I have not yet been to Bodai for dim sum, which I have been told is a worthwhile venture if you are vegetarian and looking for something beyond what Vegetarian Dim Sum House offers in Manhattan (though Happy Buddha also does dim sum).

Happy Buddha is closer to the 7 train and have a free parking garage, with an entrance just to the right of the restaurant, so getting there also tends to be easier than getting to Bodai, depending on your perspective.

Help choosing between 2 Greek restaurants in Queens

Of those two, I would pick Taverna Kyclades or head to Avli over everyone else (Kati Allo, Mythos, etc.) in Flushing/Bayside because of their consistently solid food, service, and decent prices. What Avli lacks in ambiance (vs. the nicer interiors of Mythos, Kati Allo, etc.) they make up for in great Greek food (though the back garden is great for outdoor dining in warmer weather).

NW Vegan coming to NY

Candle 79, hands down, is your best bet of those you have listed here (besides Kajitsu). It is my go-to vegan fine dining / special occasion restaurant in NYC and *never* disappoints. They accept reservations (via opentable.com) and it looks like 10pm on the 11th is available. :)

Enjoy, wherever you may end up!

Where to buy coriander, fenugreek, cumin and black mustard seeds for grinding into a curry mix?

Agree with Patel Brothers, but note that they have four locations in Queens (and beyond), depending on what's closest for cherrypoprocks.

Wafa's Mediterranean in Forest Hills

Finally tried Wafa's for dinner last night: had the veg combo ($9.95 for three items), which included the moujadara (bulgur wheat with lentils and caramelized onions), hummus and fattoush salad (with one falafel ball thrown in). Also had the spinach fatayer ($1.50). Everything was very well flavored and super delicious. The pita was thin, warm and tasty. Their homemade hot sauce added a nice amount of heat, and I'm enjoying two more spinach fatayer today for lunch.

Overall, a delicious experience that I look forward to having again and again.

Good Pupusas and Tamales in . . .Whitestone. I can't believe it.

Oh my, I will check this place out asap. Did you happen to catch the exact name/location of their Flushing branch?

Good bars near PS1?

If you had more time, I'd actually suggest starting out on the other side of the Pulaski Bridge at t.b.d., The Habitat or Mark Bar in Greenpoint. But if you only need a meet-up spot for drinks an hour before checking out PS1, then The Creek might work (bar opens at 3pm). They even have a "PS1 Special":

* $4 Magic Hat
* Saturdays only until October 2010
* Offered to restaurant and bar

Where to find really good Greek-style grilled octopus?

Avli in Bayside has a grilled octopus appetizer that's authentically prepared Greek-style and out of this world.

Best GYRO???

On Bell Blvd. in Bayside is Avli, which has truly delicious and affordable Greek food in a casual family friendly atmosphere. Gyros are very popular there, and they offer them in cubes (chicken and/or pork) as well as the more traditional Greek style, which is the doner (chicken and/or pork). The platters come with a small side salad, choice of starch, grilled pita, and perfectly thick and creamy tzatziki. Fantastic place.

Chinatown for vegetarians?

House of Vegetarian and Vegetarian Dim Sum House are both totally vegan and owned by the same folks. Similar menus, with the exception being that VDSH has dim sum all day every day.

Wild Ginger left me underwhelmed with their small portions and lackluster flavoring; I'd choose HoV over them.
