The Counter in Plano
Tried it today with the wife and kids. For a burger place, yes, it is "upscale". The food was very good. The beef in our burgers was very good quality. The 50/50 mix of fries and onion strings was tasty. The staff was pleasant, and attentive, but sort of didn't seem totally trained. I am being really picky here. I can't really put my finger on it, but they just didn't realize some basic operational aspects of serving. The waitress brought drinks, mine being iced tea, but she didn't ask if I needed sugar or sweetener, which, BTW were not on the table for some reason. I had to get her attention and ask for sugar as I "couldn't seem to find it on the table". Not a problem, it was out quickly. At the end of the meal, we had all our plates empty and one waiter was quick enough to ask if we were ready for the check, but didn't ask if he could clear the plates we had obviously finished. Once asked, he was quick to oblige.
All in all a good experience. A burger (shared by my wife and I) the kids Mini Burgers (shared by my 5 and two year old), the "Fifty- Fifty" fries and onion strings, and a couple of drinks all totalled about $20. Definitely a good burger with very high quality ingredients. I would go again.
Ruchi Indian Restaurant - Carrollton
Any new news on this place? I have driven by it twice in the past week and there are lots of cars out front at dinner time.
Wondering if anyone else has been there.
TIA
Has anyone tried Bene Bene (same center as Bistro Nous)?
Tried to go last week, but they were not open yet. Have they officially opened?
Bistro Nous - N.Dallas
We happened by there yesterday for lunch. Didn't really know about it before hand, we had merely seen the new sign and it's in the neighborhood.
Food was very good and we did speak to James. I will definitely go back. A great spot close to the house.
Highly recommendable.
German food near DFW
If your schnitzel had sauce on it, it was not a weiner schnitzel, it was a jaeger schnitzel, rahm schnizel or a paprika schnizel. Weiner schnitzel is just fried, no sauce, and you might put some lemon juice on it. I don't think you are comparing the same dish at the two restaurants. Order the weiner schnitzel at Jorg's and then report back.
I was there on Thursday for lunch, which was probably our sixth time there, and food and service have been very consistant.
Keep in mind that some dishes at Jorg's are Austrian and not German, so a comparison is going to be which version one prefers. IMHO, his weiner schnitzel is the closest to the ones I have had while travelling in Germany or Austria. I have yet to find one better in this area.
YMMV

Kuby's is probably tops for wurst. Jorg's Cafe Vienna is probably the best for schnitzel and pretzels. Henks is a distant third of that trio. So sayeth my full-blooded German wife (who has only lived in the States for a few years) and I tend to agree based on my eating in Germany while visiting her family and friends.
But, other folks will like places for different reasons.
Not all are mid-cities, but you gotta drive a bit for good food.
[SAT] Lulu's Jailhouse Cafe
Totally agree, Lulu's is over-rated. When I went, the place was full of smoke and smelled of fried "stuff". The food was less than average. I never returned in spite of my co-workers thinking it was good and going back a few times. But we never agreed on food. They thought Pizza Hut made the best pizza. Oh well.
All that was a few years ago, though.
[SAT] Burgers Revisited
I respectfully disagree.
I lived in S.A. for eight years and sampled all this except Brenda's. I guess our taste in burgers is very different, but my ranking is quite the opposite finding the LK to be less than memorable. In fact CJ's and CM's always are near the top, and, unfortunately, you don't even include the Longhorn Cafe, which is a S.A. institution as well. I will agree that Sam's is middle of the pack, though.
To each their own..
Jorg's Cafe Vienna - Plano
It's been over ten years since we have been to the Bavarian Grill while visiting Big D, and we just moved to Dallas several months ago. We would have to go back to give a fair review, but since my wife hasn't requested to go back, I don't guess it really impressed her.
Jorg's Cafe Vienna - Plano
I take it that, overall, you liked the food and would probably return.
It's never going to be "just like" any of us had across the pond, but not a bad stand-in since we can't get over there whenever we want.
Ingredients differ too. My wife has tried to make some dishes her mom makes and follows things to the letter, but it doesn't really taste exactly the same.
To me the potato salad wasn't as vinegary as I have had in Germany. Didn't have any sauerkraut. Mustard was a spicier version of some discription. Don't know what "regular mustard" is, since there are soooo many versions out there.
Heck, there are regional differences in the food even in Germany or Austria, so some of these differences we are seeing could be just that.
Jorg's Cafe Vienna - Plano
My wife and I ate there last night for the first time. She is german and has lived here in the U.S. for about ten years. We travel back to see her family once a year so I too have had a good sampling of the German food over the past twelve years.
Jorg's is a solid German/Austrian restaurant. We have yet to find a place with more authentic food in Dallas. We like Kuby's, as they have good wurst, but their schnitzel isn't that good. The Weinerschnitzel at Jorg's is nice and crisp and the potato salad was tasty. Pretzels were some of the better ones we have had and are very recommendable. Cannot comment on the wurst at Jorg's as we didn't sample any. We'll do that next time.
Our new go to place for German food.
YMMV
Dallas Steakhouses Review
I tend to agree. I have eaten at a few of these places, Bob's, III Forks, Smith & Wollenskys, Ruth's Chris..... but you have to admit, this isn't rocket science. If you have really great meat, anyone can cook a great steak. I don't find the value proposition to be very compelling. Futhermore, I was, in the case of the original Bob's, very disappointed with the staff in terms of their knowledge of etiquette. The young lady there was very attentive, but didn't seem to know how to set a table or serve. She would replace the silverware, but always put things in the wrong setting. When I am spending $100 a person, I expect the knowledge of the staff to be commensurate with that price point. Also, I don't feel that eating next door to the local tire shop to be in keeping with that scale of dining. As you can tell Bob's in town, is off my recommended list for those reasons alone.
Like you say, the crap shoot isn't worth it. Buy your own high-end beef and cook it at the house. That's what we are doing as of late.
I don't mind spending top dollar for excellent food and service, but this genre of dining just doesn't warrant the pricing.
But, I could be wrong.
[SAT] Best Burgers?
I always went to Longhorn, Chris', and Cheesy Jane's. Each of these is a variation on the burger theme and you just have to choose the approach you like best. All, in my opinion, are very good. Those would be my top three picks and I frequented all of them when I lived in S.A.
Sam's is OK, as is Chester's, and while I have been to the Lord's Kitchen a couple of times, it never really brought me back.
Don't know the others.

[Dallas] Mooyah Burgers & Fries
I am thinking that the big difference in people's opinion of this restraurant is their frame of reference. Seems like folks coming from out of state like this join more than the natives. Thousand Island dressing has no place on a Texas burger and the thing should be big, even if the meat is thinner. This thing is small and mine had soggy bread.
I guess it's just a different genre of burger. I personally, am not as fired up about it as others seem to be. I am all for trying new things and seek them out in fact, but this one has not won me over just yet.
[Dallas] Mooyah Burgers & Fries
We went there yesterday evening. The meat on the burgers is pretty good. My bread was soggy on the bottom from all the meat drippings. That style of french fries is not my favorite. The decor was a bit sterile. Not a bad value, don't dislike the joint per se, but it isn't really at the top of my list.
There are other options I prefer. YMMV
Headed to Austin and the Hill Country this weekend
I know you said you are headed to the Hill Country, but, I gotta say, if you are that close, don't mess around, GO TO LOCKHART and hit Kreutz' Market for one of the top five BBQ spots in the state. That is where I would go if I were in that area. IMHO, it beats Salt Lick all to pieces. I don't know of a joint within 200 miles of there that I would get as excited to go eat BBQ at. Heck, I'm tempted to leave Dallas right now and head that direction !!
Remember, BBQ joints are almost never open on Sundays.
If not, maybe go to Iron Works BBQ on 1st Street in Austin. They have solid fare and are close to where you are staying there in town. Still I don't think Salt Lick is worth the effort.
SA sushi, etc help
All the places mentioned a pretty good, EXCEPT Niki's Little Tokyo. I wouldn't even put that in the league of Sushi. Don't bother. The fish wasn't that good, the place is a nasty hole, and service is totally lacking. IWhen I ordered salmon and it came out smoked. I asked the waiter about that he says, "It's dangerous to eat raw salmon, so we don't serve it." You be the judge.
YMMV
Zushi Sushi is very good, but certainly puts a South Texas spin on the fish. Just keep that in mind when you go there, just to set your expectations.
Indian food in San Antonio?
There are a few other places to try. I can't remember all the addresses, but I'll throw out the names for you.
India Palace on Wurzbach @ Fredercksburg A nice buffet and the best chai in town.
http://www.indiapalacesa.com/
Madras Pavillion at I-10 and Wurzbach (maybe?) Great Southern Indian buffet. Better than Sarovar, in my humble opinion. My friends from Mumbai felt so as well.
India Oven at Blanco and West Ave. (really on Patricia) A good buffet there.
Best chow in Midland/Odessa
La Bodega is definitely one of the spots all the locals go. We make trips to Midland every month or so, and we go there a lot. It's full and we always see folks we know there.
