Where to eat after drinks at the Aviary??

Hey uhockey. I checked out Nellcote's site and it looked very good. I assume it is more of a small plates type place? Is it a communal seating place as well? How many plates would the typical person need to order to be full? (I say typical because I know you can put away serious amounts of food!)
Would you recommend Nellcote over the Publican? I have yet to try either of them. I have wanted to go to the Publican but always seem to find somewhere else that intrigues me a bit more.
My mother in law is touting Topolobampo but I would rather do something else. If I have great recommendations from people whose opinions I respect on here, I have no worry to overrule her!
Thanks.

Where to eat after drinks at the Aviary??

I would love some help in finding a place to eat that is somewhat close to the Aviary. My wife does not want to go to Naha because she has been once before and wants to try something else. I called the Girl and the Goat and there is nothing available. We are going on a Wednesday night in about a month. There are 4 people going. We want something nice but not stuffy. We are going to Alinea the next day.
Any suggestions??

Thanks.

Help the poor out of town diners... Please guys!!!!!!!

I am really frustrated right now. I find out that I get to come to Chicago with my wife and her brother and his wife. The bad news is that it is happening next month. NO time to plan to eat in one of my favorite restaurant towns in America.
Let me vent for just one second. The exclusivity of Next is infuriating. And now, having read that Alinea is thinking of changing their reservation system to tickets as well, I am totally dejected. OK, done.
I have always found a treasure trove of information and have never been let down by the consensus opinion on reservations here. With only a month before my trip, is the Girl and the Goat just a dream? I went there the last time in Chicago but I reserved nearly 3 months in advance. I would love to go back to take my brother-in-law but have a feeling this is out of the question.
I am definitely going to go back to the Aviary for drinks. I feel this is nearly a cant miss thing to do.
Here is the dilemma:
What restaurant would you pick to replace Alinea? They say they are booked up and we are on the waiting list. We want something nice. We would like a tasting menu, more than likely, unless there is something that we shouldn't miss. We have been to Spiaggia, Girl and the Goat, and Tru recently. I need some other can't miss recommendations to lift my spirits!!!! Thanks so much.

Low to mid-range Nola restaurants

I would love to try Boucherie also as the menu looks great but as a former resident of NOLA having lived uptown, I would warn you that if you do not have a car and are planning to take a taxi uptown from the Quarter, you are looking at about $25 each way including tip ( if you go there via St Charles which the cabbies love to do to tourists). That will add a nice chunk to your nightly meal.

Bringing cheese back home

Thanks for the link. Good stuff there!!

Bringing cheese back home

Thanks. Much appreciated.

Bringing cheese back home

I definitely agree with you. I don't want to get in trouble over having cheese in my luggage! Thanks for the info.

Bringing cheese back home

Sunshine, I appreciate your response. The show was Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations and can assure you it was quite accurate. So the cheese you brought back wasn't vacuum sealed and wasn't pasteurized and no one said anything? Is this a normal thing or did you slide by?
Was it in your carry on? It was found by a customs agent and he didn't care? I really thought that that type of cheese is illegal in the US.
Thanks.

Bringing cheese back home

So I assume that as long as it is vacuum packed, it is fine? Does that include the unpasteurized goodness as well? I saw a television show where a chef actually had to "smuggle" cheese from France back on the plane and did so in his child's diapers. He wrapped them up as if they were used.
This is the reason why I ask. Sorry if I have offended anyone for not sifting through the apparent multitudes of information that are readily available. I just thought some people with similar interests as myself, wouldn't mind divulging some information on the topic.
Thanks Sunshine, for your help.

Bringing cheese back home

Is it possible to bring cheese back home with me to the US? I thought that some of the good stuff was not permitted through customs. I would hate to buy a lot of great cheese and have to either through it away or have an impromptu picnic at the airport? Thanks for all the info.

Patois??

Thanks so much. This is exactly what I was trying to figure out. I am certainly going to take your recommendation!

Fun place to eat on a Friday night in the Quarter or CBD

Thanks for the responses everyone. I guess I forgot to mention that I used to live in New Orleans and I try to visit at least once a year. I have eaten at nearly every place in town (I feel like it at least) sans a couple. I have never eaten at Stella!, K-Pauls (I dont know why but it just doesnt excite me), Le Foret, Patois, Coquette, Clancy's, or Green Goddess. I have eaten at every Emerils restaurant in N.O, Muriels (which I wouldnt recommend any longer), Luke, August, Domenica, Cochon, Herbsaint (about 10 years ago), Bayona, Galatoire's, Dickie Brennans, Bistro at La Maison de Ville, Brennans, Lilette, Mila... on and on and on.
My wife and I are going with another couple that has only been to New Orleans once and I want to show the best time possible. I always see it as my mission to find the best possible restaurant for the mood that I think I will be in. Thursday we will arrive and go to Luke for lunch. For dinner Thursday night we will pull off the daily double of John Besh restaurants and go to August.
Friday for lunch, I am thinking possibly Domilise's, Mr. B's, Cochon Butcher, or Galatoire's (depending on the weather. I figure if it is raining and is supposed to rain all day, why not spend it inside for lunch at Galatoire's).
For dinner Friday, I was thinking possibly Patois but with a parade going on uptown, I am just afraid that hailing a cab may be difficult. We may just stay in the Quarter or walk to the CBD. Having said that, Herbsaint might fit the bill. I really am just curious if someone can come up with something that I have just totally forgotten about that I shouldn't miss. Thanks so much.

Fun place to eat on a Friday night in the Quarter or CBD

We are going to Restaurant August on Thursday. I am trying to think of a good place to eat on Friday night in the Quarter or CBD that first and foremost has great food but also has a relaxed but lively feeling to it. I was thinking about going to Herbsaint but after a day of drinking, I'm not sure if we are going to bother our neighbors or if we will enjoy the atmosphere there. I have only eaten there once and it was a few years ago. I remember it being kind of a quiet place.
Any good ideas?

Patois??

Ritz Carlton

Patois??

I will be heading back to N.O. on Thursday, February 9 through Saturday the 11th. On Friday, there is a parade that is pretty close to uptown that starts at 6:30. Was thinking of having a few margaritas at Superior Grill (like I did when I lived in N.O.) then heading to a restaurant in the vicinity.
Is it going to be difficult to grab a taxi?? What would you recommend I do? Call for a taxi a block off of the parade route?
I would love to try Patois but I don't see it mentioned that often on the board. Is it worth a shot or should I look elsewhere? I haven't been to Patois or Coquette. Which one would you choose? Thanks so much.

Paris restaurants review

Did you go to Reims? If so, how did you get there? How did you like Le Crayere? Did you stay at the chateau? Did you go on any champagne tastings/tours? If so, what would you recommend? As you can see, I am quite interested.

Lunch spot on/ near Magnificient Mile/ Gold Coast on Friday

Thank you all for the recommendations. I really appreciate it!

Lunch spot on/ near Magnificient Mile/ Gold Coast on Friday

I will be going to Alinea at 6 pm on Friday and therefore do not want to be stuffed but want to make the most of my 2 days in Chicago. The wife will want to shop and would like to have a good lunch spot picked out. I don't care about type of cuisine or cost; I just want something really good. I would also prefer that it not take more than an hour and a half at the very most. Any ideas? Is Fulton's on the River worth a lunch visit?
Also, tomorrow I will be going to a Cubs game and would like to get an idea about lunch on the way or around Wrigley. I will be taking the L there from Chicago (Red) line. I would love to try Hot Dougs but that may be a bit out of the way. Should I even try to make a stop or should I just head to Wrigley, go to a nearby bar, and wait for a hot dog in the stadium? Any info would be helpful. Thanks so much for any help.

I was just curious. I wasn't hinting at anything or trying anything subversive (not that you were accusing me of that either). I think nxtasy may be correct about the blog that I was thinking about but I know I have read your blog on more than one occasion because once I saw your picture on your blog, I immediately remembered you were in the medical field. By the way, I've enjoyed reading the blog and am curious where the hell you find all the room to put all the damn food you talk about!

Best Tasting Menu in Chicago

After reading this thread, I am convinced that the OP does not have any clue what molecular gastronomy is and what it is not. Sous vide is not borderline MG. It isn't MG at all. For instance, you can take a smaller piece of salmon, place it in a sealed ziploc bag, and put said salmon in a sink filled with warm water for 2 hours and you would have prepared the salmon sous vide. What about that is MG?

Hey uhockey,
Have you gone by another name or written your blog under another name? Like epicurean something?? I remember reading your blog quite a long time ago about your trip to Las Vegas and remember enjoying it. I just dont remember it being under the name of uhockey. Didn't you eat at Joel Robuchon's "Mansion" in Vegas?

Esca thoughts asap?

I went to Esca a few years ago and would never go back. I was with 2 other people and our pasta was seriously underdone. Not even close to al dente. It was as if they took dried pasta and put it in boiling water for less than 1 minute. It literally crunched as you bit into it. I NEVER complain about food at restaurants but this was inedible. I talked to the manager and he told me, in no uncertain terms, that I just didn't understand that in this specific region in Italy, this is how they cook the pasta. I said that I had just been to Babbo the day before and it was fantastic and have been to many other very nice Italian restaurants and never have I had anything so bad. I asked him if he would try it since he so was certain that it was supposed to be that way. He did not but continued with this line of reasoning.
This guy basically tried to make me feel like I was an idiot. He said the only thing he could do for us at this point was that we could order something else. So we all ordered the gnocchi and left extremely displeased. I would go back to Babbo in a heart beat but believe me, you can find much better Italian food in NYC at a much better price point than Esca.

Where to go today?

Thanks for the recommendations yesterday. I was wondering if someone could point me in the direction of something good to do today after lunch at the Bar Room at the Modern this afternoon. I have about 7 hours to kill and the limitless possibilities of things to do is overwhelming. Ideas??? Thanks

Lunch spot for 1 close to 52nd and 5th.

I just want to say thanks for all the replies. I trust the posters on this site far more than any other site. I really appreciate the info.

Lunch spot for 1 close to 52nd and 5th.

I will be in NYC this weekend and want to make the most of my time culinarily speaking. I am eating at Morimoto for dinner on Friday night with my SO. I will be by myself for lunch on Friday and would love some ideas about what is good and is near my hotel. I am staying on 52nd and 5th. I dont mind to walk a bit or take a taxi as long as it is worth it! I am not picky at all, the only requisite is that it must be really good!
I would rather the cost not be outrageous for lunch. I would hope to keep it around $50 as I wont be drinking too much at this point in the day.
Also, any thoughts on dinner for Saturday for 2? Was thinking along the lines of Noodle Bar, Ssam Bar, Ma Peche (ok, I guess almost anything David Chang related), Spotted Pig, Fedora, or Hearth? Any recs for something in the village for Saturday night? I would prefer a reservation although I know I can't get one at some pf the places I mentioned above. Thanks so much!!

Chicago!! What's missing from my culinary adventure??

Bookmarking. thanks chicgail.

When does Chris McMillan(sp/) work?

I assume you mean Wed thru Saturday nights? Just want to be sure. When do you think he gets there? I would love to have him make me a few drinks tomorrow some time before dinner. I really appreciate the replies!

When does Chris McMillan(sp/) work?

I have seen some of his videos on YouTube about making different cocktails and know he works at MiLa. I just dont know when he works. I will be there Friday and Saturday and would love to stop in and have him make me a drink or 2. Thanks.
