Graduation: Eating well and keeping them happy...
Hey, thanks for the links! I hadn't been able to find a firm menu anywhere. I made reservation for Morimoto after all. A bit early for my tastes, 5 in the afternoon... But I suppose that leaves time for more fun afterwards.
Thanks for the help,

Graduation: Eating well and keeping them happy...
I haven't been to Morimoto, though I'd like to. The earliest seating they have there is at 9pm, however. Still, an option.
What are prices like on non-sushi items? The $100 sushi boat sounds like a great idea, but since I might end up footing the bill, it would be good to know what I might end up paying before making the leap.
I'm also considering Alma de Cuba. Good idea? Rough price range?
Thanks!

Graduation: Eating well and keeping them happy...
Pod makes a good backup plan. I was hoping to do something that I hadn't done yet, and in my opinion, the sushi isn't as good as some other Japanese options. If I haven't found anything by tomorrow, I think I'll go for it.
Thanks.

Graduation: Eating well and keeping them happy...
L'Angolo didn't work out, I couldn't get reservations. I did get reservations at La Locanda del Ghiottone, however, so that seems like a fair replacement.
Still considering other options for Saturday. Time (and reservations!) is running out.
Graduation: Eating well and keeping them happy...
Well, so much for the L'Angolo plan... They don't have any seats available for the time we need. So I'm pretty open to anything fairly casual with good food, BYOB, on Friday evening. Perhaps Melograno will be an option on Saturday eve after all if we don't do Italian on Friday.

Graduation: Eating well and keeping them happy...
Hi all,
Graduation is coming up in a couple weeks, and I'm trying to solve the intractable problem of where to take my parents and sister out to dinner.. Or, perhaps more aptly, where to get them to take -me- out to dinner.
I think I've got Friday night figured out, we'll go to L'Angolo after picking up my sister at the airport. I liked it before, and it has the BYOB atmosphere and good Italian food that I'm seeking for a more casual night. Commencement is early in the morning, so I was thinking about doing a picnic lunch somewhere that is accessible by mass transit... Ideas? Anything more creative than Rittenhouse Square, where I'm not sure they would appreciate us whipping out a bottle of wine?
The tricky bit comes to dinner after graduation. I want to go somewhere celebratory and tasty that I've never been before. Since we'll have done Italian the night before, my idea for going to Melograno is right out... Besides, I'd prefer some place I can make reservations.
I was thinking Amada, but that fails on the "Been there" test. Great food, good atmosphere and convenient location, but I want to try some place new. I'm considering Japanese so my sister and I can eat sushi, but it has to be fairly non-sushi friendly for my parents, and still have a fairly celebratory atmosphere. Pod would be an option, but it, too, fails the "Been there" test. I'm considering Zento and Uzu, but I'm not sure they have the right atmosphere.
Any ideas? The idea is to keep them well fed so there's no time for infighting between eating and food-comas... This will be the first time we've all been together in five years or so.
Thanks!

best sushi in Philly
Has anyone else run into a problem with a bit of discrimination at Shiroi Hana? A friend and I had a very disappointing experience in which, not only were we exposed to mediocre sushi, but we were segregated upstairs, where they sent all the other Caucasians. After that, we decided never to go back. This happened to another friend as well. Isolated incidents, or general trend?
Great places to eat in Almeria? Gibraltar?
Hi all,
I'm headed to Spain for a couple weeks in the near future. I'll be staying mainly in Roquetas de Mar, but will also spend some time in Aguadulce, Almeria, and Gibraltar. It has been an awfully long time since I've been there, so, are there any great places I shouldn't miss?
Thanks!

Dinner Suggestions Near World Cafe Live (University of Pennsylvania)
After a couple of disappointments, Pod recently redeemed itself to me when we had a wonderful time there for a friend's birthday. We had plenty of maki and other sushi. They managed to turn even vegetable rolls into a gustatory delight. If you sit at the sushi bar, don't be afraid to order above and beyond what goes by on the conveyor belt. In my experience, the stuff that goes by on the plates tends to pale in comparison to placed orders. Be warned, however, that Pod's chic- retro- futuristic atmosphere isn't for everyone.
CHINATOWN, PHILADELPHIA
Sang Kee is great, though not as good as they used to be. The General Tso's is done fillet-style, as opposed to generic fried chicken globules with sauce. The sauce is tasty, though lacks a certain zest it once had. Also, their steamed dumplings are great, and have a nice thick oyster-soy sauce that adds a great dimension to the flavor.
