Preshow dinner/drinks near Taft Theatre in Cincinnati?
So a bunch of friends and I are going to Cincinnati on Monday night to see Elvis Costello at the Taft. I've been put in charge of the preshow dinner plans.
Eight adults or so, relatively adventurous eaters. Probably shouldn't be painfully expensive. We'd prefer something we could walk to the show from, but if you have a great suggestion that's not too far away we could make it work.
Any ideas? Thanks!
Cocktails and bars
Thanks for all the tips, everybody! Be sure to say hello if you see us the week after Christmas; we'll be the ones stumbling around the Quarter drunk. :)
Is there such a thing as a bad Oxo product?
This is exactly what I was coming in to post about. The Mandoline is generally well-designed, easy to clean, etc., but I'm pretty sure the blade is made by Fischer-Price. It's like trying to slice an onion with a bench scraper.
Cocktails and bars
One has to do something to fill those long hours between meals in New Orleans, and my usual pastime of choice is drinking. :)
We're heading down for a few days for NYE, so what are the bars and cocktails we shouldn't miss? (Note: first person to suggest a Hand Grenade has to chug three of them.)
Some favorites of mine, from memory:
Sazerac at the Carousel Bar--We're staying at the Monteleone, so I'm sure we'll be hitting the Carousel pretty hard. The Sazerac was wonderful, but is there anything in particular I should order there?
Monsoon at Port of Call--not for the meek. A tastier, pink-colored take on the Hurricane, and a great choice if you want to get your swerve on early in the evening.
Hurricane at Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop--Nothing remarkable about the Hurricane itself, but the location is great.
Anything at dba--Incredible selection of beers and liquors on Frenchman Street.

Rehearsal dinner suggestions
We had our reception at the Acme Oyster House. They have a nice private room upstairs that would easily do 50, they laid out a great buffet for us, and it wasn't that pricey at all, for the Quarter. Their special event coordinator who helped us organize it (can't remember her name) was worth her weight in gold.
If you're looking for elegance, this won't be it, but it was good New Orleans food in a great location.
New Year's Eve - Special dining events?
My wife and I are going to New Orleans for our anniversary and New Year's Eve. We got married on 12/30/02 in Jackson Square, and we haven't been back to NO since. We're excited--we used to go down for a few days every NYE, but this is the first time we'll be there when we aren't impoverished students!
We were in Charleston for NYE last year (and I didn't realize what a great foodie town it was until we got there--man alive, we ate well) and most of the good restaurants had special events happening, with a prix fixe menu or the like. Do the good restaurants in NO do the same thing? Are there any worth jumping on for reservations now?
We have no culinary plans yet, except that we want to go back to the site of our wedding reception on our anniversary--the Acme Oyster House. We're staying at the Maison Dupuy, the hotel attached to Dominique's; I don't know what the board's take is on it, but I've heard good things.
