Revere area Wedding Rehearsal Dinner Venue needed

The Winthrop Arms in the neighboring town might be worth a look. About a 10 minute drive from St. Anthony's.

Review? Porthole Restaurant-Lynn

Ick.

Restaurants open late Saturday nights in Arlington or Lexington?

I would call any of these places first. Open till 11 and taking orders till 11 are not always the same thing.

Looking for really delicious sandwiches (platter) for a party

If you can stretch to Lexington, Neillio's Gourmet Farms really excells at this.

Guru the Caterer - wacky hours?

I eat there quite a bit and have never had this experience. It clearly shouldn't happen but much of life is things that shouldn't happen. My guess is that they actually ran out of food and had nothing to sell at the time you arrived.

They have a somewhat unique way of delivering a somewhat unique product. I don't always like not knowing whats actually for sale without having to ask, but I like the place and the owner a lot and would rather put up with idiosyncracies than have another sub shop or a KFC there.

Again, that shouldn't have happened. Could have been an emergency or just poor operating procedure. I'd had the experience on a number of occasions of going somewhere and being confronted with a "closed for private party" sign. I don't like it, but it happens. I still go back.

Krazy Kary's Kaput?

I was in Arlington Center today and noticed there was brown paper completely covering the windows and door of Krazy Kary's hamburger place. Anyone know what's either going on, going out, or coming in?

Manchester Crossing - Manchester by the Sea

I don't know anything about this place other than the fact that it is not The Landing at 7 Central.

Arlington Diner - New Owners?

I ate there a couple of times when I had heard about the Greek Corner people taking ownership a few years ago. If that's a big improvement, it must have been pretty poor before that. Haven't been there in quite a while.

Wilson's Farm scone update

Thanks for looking into that and posting tweetie. I'm the one who started the original thread and I'm glad to know it wasn't just me. I always assumed they made them in house before...they might have been better off staying with Jacqueline's anyway.

Erratic hours at Pho and Rice

There's a lot of stuff on that menu that isn't Pho.

Erratic hours at Pho and Rice

I've tried to bring someone to lunch here twice over the past 3 days. Arrived about 12:00 to be greeted by a sign in the window that they will not open until 2 (Sunday) or 1 (today). No reason for the late openings on the sign or website. I'm curious if anyone else has had this happen or knows what's going on. I really like this place a lot but to get all they way over there during normal business hours and find them closed with lunch time ticking away is making me less inclined to go.

Not your average joe's norwell

My wife and i eat at the Arlington location now and then and kind of like it. It's a chain family restaurant and for that the food is somewhat imaginative and well executed. I've had meals at the 99 that were as sweet as desserts. I don't find Joe's food to be overseasoned or the service specifically problematic. My only complaint is that it's not wildly unusual for the protein on the plate to be hot and the sides to be cool. I really don't like that.

What's up with the scones at Wilson Farms?

I'm curious if anyone else has seen a sharp decline in the quality of these things? I used to go out of my way to get them and the last 2 times a number of weeks apart they've been awful in very different ways.

First time they had expanded to such enormous size that they were tough, burnt raisins on the outside and undercooked in the middle. Today they looked great so I got one and tasted it. It was absolutely loaded with salt. If it were a savory biscuit it would have been much too salty but for a kind of sweet breakfast item it was wild.

They used to have 2 kinds; the ones in the case with the frosting that look like giant unicorn droppings and the "Irish" ones that were on a covered plate by the kitchen door that were less sweet, unfrosted, and came with raisins or blueberries. Too bad, I used to like them and buy a lot of other stuff while I was there.

Are Whole Foods roasted chickens always so terrible?

I've had one here in the Greater Boston area and found it nice looking but dry. I'm not sure but I think "plain" means unseasoned with those things so they might be off the hook for that. Someone on the Boston Boards a while back observed they seem to gear their seaoning of prepared foods in general "for toddlers" which I found both funny and true.

Reasonable Thanksgiving buffet?

My mother lives in Revere and we've had a tough time finding places that were open for Thanksgiving the past couple of years. We've been going to the Porthole Pub on the Lynnway near the Nahant rotary. It is what it is, but prices are reasonable and plenty of parking in the lot. You will need a reservation.

Don't know anyplace that does buffet. Not a big fan of high volume buffets myself as I find most places are really lax about food temperaure with them. I had to say it, it's a real pet peeve of mine

Sonic to Open in Peabody MA!!

Pemma, i'm not arguing with you and you may well be right. I'm just trying to think of any other circumstance where anyone would wait 2 hours for someone to bring them a hamburger. I kind of get the line out the door at Bartley's , but not this.

Anyone else remember Adventure Car Hop on Route 1?

Sonic to Open in Peabody MA!!

What is it that would make someone wait in traffic for 2 hours for a franchised chain hamburger and tater tots in a general area where food options are almost unlimited? How good could it possibly be?

Sonic to Open in Peabody MA!!

I remember when Krispy Kreme first opened in Medford it was a madhouse for the first few weeks. Now they're gone. The unmanageable crowds at Sonic will peter out soon.

Are these places easy to get to?

You'll be within walking distance of Boston's Chinatown. Don't go to Kowloon.

8/09 Gran Gusto: An Inflexible "No" Kitchen

Have you looked at the menu of this place? It ain't a sub shop. This guy clearly is chef by anyones definition. A chef making a pb&j sandwich is still a chef.

We have no way of knowing what was going on in there, but when I was in the business you could have a small handful of customers at the tables while the kitchen is slammed trying to get 3 catering orders together that all need to go out hot at the same time. It's easy to assume the cooks are back there sipping sherry and playing cards, but it might not be the case.

Someone wanted to order off-menu. For whatever reason, they were politely refused. At that point, you have the option to chew or screw. The OP is pretty particular and has nothing but superlatives for the quality of the food she ate. I'll gladly eat in a non-forelock tugging kitchen if the food is that good and the service is reasonably polite, which sounds like the case here.

8/09 Gran Gusto: An Inflexible "No" Kitchen

Bear in mind we're only hearing half the story. At first read it sounds like someone just asked for "pizza x with sausage", but the OP references "NONE of our requests to add or switch" which makes me wonder just how many of these requests there were. If you've got a table of six people wanting pizza thats half one thing with this instead of that, and another that's half and half of something else but without such and such and the addition of this and that you could go nuts pretty fast.

You can still make the argument that the customer is always God, but I'd like to know exactly what was refused before I'd throw the chef under the bus.

Vegetarian/Healthy Restaurants

You might want to specify which city.

Guru the Caterer...MEH

Guru's is trying to do something different. His food is a less rich and fatty than a lot of Indian restaurant food which uses a lot more butter and cream. He's trying to make healthier, home-style food and I think he does a very fine job. I ate there yesterday and had chicken tikka masala and a roasted curried potato and pepper dish. I couldn't believe how good it was.

I've had issues with portion sizes there; getting an 8 oz container of something with a full order of sauce and maybe 7 peas and 2 pieces of potato floating in it. But the idiosyncratic elements are part of what the place is. He doesn't have recipies, he eyeballs most everything. I live nearby and eat there frequently and think what he's doing is somewhat unique and can't really be compared with other Indian places head to head. When his stuff is good (most of the time), it's as good as anything I've had in Greater Boston Indian restaurants.

So Long, Mifune

No great loss of Mifune in my opinion. I still miss Viet Cafe.

Wild Horse - AWFUL SERVICE

I don't get this reaction. Your friend mis-reads the menu (which is very clear in the on-line version), orders something she decides she doesn't want, and expects to be fawned over for presenting the establishment with the opportunity to throw an $11 dollar product in the trash. I don't know what transpired in the conversation with the manager (mind- boggling), but there sure seems to be a sense of entitlement at work here if you consider this to be "awful service". Some people's patronage is just more trouble than it's worth.

Blue Ribbon Rules

I love Blue ribbon, but I've got to say the 3 times I've tried the brisket it's been dry, tough, underseasoned, and stone cold. Everything else I've had I've really liked.

Revere Beach Good Eats?

Kelly's is a pretty good walk from Revere Beach Station. I've also found their food to be very underseasoned.

Floating Rock or Tacos Lupita on Shirley Ave are probably best bets for food, but the neighborhood is less than picturesque.

New Arlington Chow Find: Pasha Turkish Cuisine

I had the skewered lamb sandwich for lunch yesterday and liked it so much I took my wife to dinner there that night. We both loved it. We ordered the Beytea (seasoned ground beef in phylo with yogurt and tomato sauce) and the curried sauteed vegetables (Kori sosiu sebze sote). It was like having a circus in your mouth. Just wonderful flavors. I wouldn't call it cheap and portions are pretty good but the quality of flavor and range of the menu are outstanding. I hope they're here for a long time. Arlington needed something other than another Indian or Japanese place (or bank).

Very pleasant space and friendly staff. We we the only people there at 5:30 and it was filling up very fast at 6. Thanks to the OP for the news...this is a wonderful place.

Za: Hospital food, at airport prices.

I just looked at the menu on the Za website. It's one of the few, if not the only online menu I've seen that lists all of the available items and no prices for any of them. I ate there once. I thought the pizza was pretty good though my wife hated the crust. The salad was good but small for the price. I think the place is a lousy value.

Maggio's in Revere?

I had forgotten about their pizza. Haven't had it in quite some time but it was always quite good...often better than some of the Revere Beach stalwarts of times gone by (Bill Ashes, Anna's, etc.)
