Substitute for Beef Broth
Where does one get porcini powder? I might not get it in time for this meal..but I am intrigued..I think I am going with a mushroom broth..sounds the most compatible...
Substitute for Beef Broth
I am making the slow roasted beef from ATK- I saw someone made a sauce to go with it that was equal parts, wine, beef broth, madeira, some shallots and rosemary... I really do not like what I find to be the "metalic flavor" of beef broth. Do chowhounders think that using water is ok and the wine and madeira will cover it...or do you have a recommendation for a really good beef broth?????
Octopus- A Fishy Question
Typically I boil an octopus for about 1-2 hours-- then coat it in Garlic, Olive Oil, S&P and throw on the grill for about 3-5 minutes... delicious-- like I am back in Greece... I want to cook this on Christmas Day- but have so many other great smells in the kitchen that I was thinking of boiling it on Saturday and then putting in the fridge (heck it is cooked right?) then Sunday just grilling-- do you all think this is a NO- NO since it is seafood?
Monday Night in Portland- Good Places are Closed!
Portland, Maine.. love it... going there tonight! Last time we were there in Feb. we did Duck Fat yahoo!
And Hugo's ( Slightly disappointed) Now we were either going to try Fore Street or Bressca-- but both are closed on a Monday night-- we are in town M-T only... dinner suggestions?!?!?

Our 10 year wedding anniversary. With 2 young kids we don't get out much and we are going to Maine for the weekend. Thoughts? Suggestions for other places welcome
Pre-Theater Meal
Seeing a show in May at the Schubert Theater (West 44th between Broadway and 8th Ave) Not interested in the "easy fast pre theater meal" --- looking for good dinning for best friends 40th-(we've been friends for 28 years!)
locha nora
Chivas made this wonderful liquor, has a great cinnamon flavor, without overpowering the drink. A friend introduced me to it over 8 years ago-- had it in the liquor cabinet for years-- anyone know how to get more?
How Long For Seafood?????
Thanks everyone---I appreciate the attention to detail with regards to storing the shellfish appropriately-- and I don't want to make 6 people sick-- so if in doubt--- I do have a back up menu planned in case...
Clams and Chorizo is the appetizer--- my husband will make the mussel dish-- not sure yet---hmmmm getting hungry thinking about it!
Happy Holidays!
How Long For Seafood?????
I'm looking to make shellfish on Christmas DAY. The local seafood market is very good and open on Christmas Eve til 6pm--- what do chowhounders think about making the purchase 5pm on Thursday and cooking 5pm on Friday-- Thanks
Preserved Lemons
I have a few recipes that I want to try that call for preserved lemons. I can't find them anywhere in Boston. Can anyone point me in the right direction. Thanks.
Williams Sonoma
Recently I was given a gift card to Pottery Barn, I found out I can use it in WS. WS is quite pricey as we all know-- and has some fun stuff. What would you all get that is fun, or not sold in other stores. It's for $200.00. Thanks
Greek?
They are open all year--- crazy right!?! There is "antiquing" and Crane's Beach is there-- beautiful low key beach-- not OK for the winter (even to walk) but nice in the summer-- there is a wonderful - and expensive inn there-- I am blanking on the name.
Enjoy the clams!
Greek?
Ipswich is about 50 minutes from Boston--- as for the Clam Shack--oh yeah-- welcome to the North Shore--- Long Debate between Woodmans and Clam Box--- My favorite is Woodmans--- full belly clams in an amazing breading--- Clam Box is good too-- you need to try them both -- people have their preferences-- I like the set up at Woodmasn better too.
Good luck
Greek?
As first generation Greek-- I can tell you-- that the American Gyro-- what I call it-- closest thing has been Kouzina--- but for true Greek food-- the kind my parents will approve of--
Ithaki-- in Ipswich-- yes I know -- scream -- I'm telling you to go way north-- but it is worth it-- the grilled fish is served perfectly-- my parents visit from NY every Palm Sunday and that is the only place they will go-- my father orders a special cheese appetizer-- that he swears this restaurant is the only one in the USA that does it right-- takes him back to being a little boy in Greece--- ( I purposely can't remember the name-- because I only order the grilled octopus appetizer)
I also agree that Watertown has a strong Greek presence, parts of Belmont too-- if you are looking to take food home and heat up-- try Sophias Market in Belmont--
Good luck
afternoon tea- L'espalier vs. The Bristol
I have only attended the Bristol and enjoyed it--- good quality food and tea-- knowledgeable staff too. Not sure what the decor would be for Valentine's day-- if they would change anything--
I have never attended L'Espalier-- maybe go yourself ahead and then choose-- would that be so bad ; )
L'andana, Burlington, MA
So excited that higher end dinning was heading North of Boston (Summer Winter, L'andana) My husband and I decided to try them both out-- within 2 weeks of each other. WOW!
L'andana-- amazing from start to finish-- Tuscan style menu-- check out the website--
Service was outstanding, we felt very well taken care of-- without an overwhelming sense of being "bothered". Food was plentiful-- not what you may expect from a higher end place-- often I picture big plates and portions centered in the middle -- leaving me hungry for more. Wine list is extensive-- and desserts also very creative. My fear is it will get so popular-- that I won't be able to get there enough! I share with you my chowhound friends-- do go! Before it gets to busy to get in!
Help, I'm stranded in Salem!
Try the Old Spot (Tavern) for their lunch menu-- I recall some brunch type items--- they also make a nice Bloody Mary for your lunch-- I like their menu overall.
What do Chowhounds do for a living (besides eat of course)?
Great Topic--
My dad started off as a short order cook-- moved along to some "American Continental" he would call it-- never officially trained-- unless you call his mom right off the boat from Greece "Chef Helen".
Mom was an awful cook-- I was always fascinated what my dad could do in the kitchen-- so got interested as a "hobby".
My profession-- psychiatric social worker. I work part time for the best psychiatric hospital in the country-- and part time in private practice.
For years I wanted the to go to J&W-- but after reading Kitchen Confidential by Bourdain-- I said forget it-- and just chose to enjoy the meals my husband and I make together for each other or small entertainment!
Thanks for the topic!
Cohasset Dinning
Going to a show at the South Shore Music Circus Theater-- dinning within 5 miles? Suggestions?
Birthday Dinner
Looking for birthday dinner celebration in Boston and surrounding areas-- for 2-- his favorites so far have been No 9 Park, Hammersleys-- if that gives you an idea of what we are looking for---Thanks!
Good Place in Salem MASS Area
After hearing about the Old Spot on this board (maybe from Pegmeister), in late February, we have probably been there once a week. Most times it's on a Sunday, which means a brunch menu that has been consistently good. But dinner has been great as well. On Sunday's they offer a breakfast that's so big my husband can't finish it. But he seems to have a lot of fun trying.
Bostonian visiting South Florida
Jaguar was the place in Coconut Grove--- DELICIOUS--- good service too! Gourmet Diner has the best French Food I've had (including NY and Boston).

Sorry, I should have said we will be staying in Sunny Isles. Really, we are interested in chowhound's favorites, not just the types of foods we listed. We are willing to travel. Also, we'll be in town for the superbowl, so sports themes are welcome as well. We would be happy to recpirocate with recommendations in Boston if you guys get tired of all the sunshine.
