Yonge & Eglinton new Gold Star Cafe? Anyone know anything?

It's the same people behind the now closed Marilyn Monroe Cafe in Oakville. They lasted about 7 months there, so hopefully they'll have more luck at Y&E.

Anything decent INSIDE Barclay's Center

So I did a search but could only find questions and answers about dining options near Barclay's Center. Has anyone eaten at any of the places inside Barclay's? I'm especially interested if there are any sit down options. I'm also thinking about the 40/40 Club, though I know that it is a buffet.

Thanks!

Sansaire sous vide - my experience as a warning!

So for anyone thinking of ordering a Sansaire sous vide machine, I though I'd let you know that based on my experience, DON'T!

I ordered the unit in October and received periodic updates via email and on their website. I was excited to see in early February that the units were finally shipping and more excited to see that they charged my credit card on February 13, as I thought I'd be getting my unit shortly.

Well, they didn't ship it until March 5, and it didn't arrive until March 11, but I was still excited as I'd spent months reading about sous vide cooking and telling everyone I knew about this wonderful machine.

As soon as I received the unit, I unpacked it, filled a pot of water, and plugged it in. Needless to say I was disappointed when I turned it on to find out that the display didn't work.

I emailed Sansaire immediately and received no response. I emailed them again twice yesterday and finally received a response, asking if I had removed the sticker on the display (yes, I'm not an idiot!).

I replied that yes, I had, and that I'd tried the unit both in and out of a pot of water, and the display definitely didn't work.

Needless to say, I have still had no response from them and since there is no phone number to call, my only next step is to call my credit card company and dispute the month old charge.

I am so upset and disappointed that I waited 5 months for my sous vide machine and ended up receiving a defective unit that they seem to have no interest in replacing.

So if you're thinking of buying one, hope that you receive a unit that actually works, and don't expect them to be in business a long time with this kind of customer service.

There is a "kosher certified" Edible Arrangements in L.A. Website doesn't say who the certificate is from, but might be worth a call.

World’s Biggest Bookstore to become restaurant row

Who said I'd rather have another condo in this location? All I said was that I think there are LOTS of things wrong with their plan and with the press release.

1. This location is surrounded by high rises, most notably Atrium on Bay across the road, which has approval to add 5 floors to each of the existing towers. The "multi-level patios" will be great, in the shade all day long.

2. To me, the "best dining experience" includes great food and service, but also includes unique things like maybe a great view, easy parking or access, and not in an area where (unfortunately) there have been a number of public shootings.

3. To be open for the 2015 Film Festival, they need to start construction THIS spring. The store isn't closing until the end of March.

4. I don't understand how the "signage and branding opportunities" will "pull in the millions of yearly patrons" when the site doesn't have great exposure to either Yonge Street or Bay Street.

5. The rents that are going to be needed in this location, given what Lifetime paid for the land and what construction costs will be, will ensure that it will only be more chain restaurants.

And finally, the rumour is that Eataly is going in one of the new towers near ACC/Union Station (I've heard of one specifically, but since it's just a rumour, I don't want to say).

HAHA!!! What a joke. There are so many things wrong with this "press release" that I don't even know where to begin. Good luck to Lifetime Developments and Paracom Realty!

Anyone been to Harvest Kitchen?

Went for lunch a few weeks ago. Waiter was great but they were out of the no-meatball melt, and it took over 45 minutes to get the food once we ordered. Found the portions to be tiny and had to ask for missing components to the dishes. Won't be going back, though they were full, so don't think they'll miss me.

I made a Winterlicious reservation at Daisho for lunch tomorrow (Friday) as soon as they opened up, but now it looks like I can't use it. Not sure if I'm allowed to post asking if anyone wants it. It's for 2 people at noon.

Chipotles in adobo sauce?

I had the exact same problem two weeks ago. Checked five supermarkets, including the "Mexican" and "International" sections. Finally found them at Loblaws Queens Quay - bought the only two cans they had on the shelf.

Are there any good kosher restaurants or caterers in Toronto??!?!?!

Believe it or not, no. A Jew needs to "light the fire" for a meal to be kosher. If you're interested, google "bishul akum".

Are there any good kosher restaurants or caterers in Toronto??!?!?!

I may get into trouble for this, but what do you think of the food at Dr. Laffa? If you think it's decent, they do catering.

BTW, the problem isn't just in Toronto. We were recently in Los Angeles, and I was super excited to try Ditmas LA - a kosher steakhouse by a chef from Top Chef (Alex Reznick). The place was PACKED but it was undeniably the worst meal that I've had in years.

Recommendations at St Lawrence market

The quality of the meat is based on which butcher you go to and how much you spend. I shop here regularly (live close by) and find that when it comes to the meat, there really is a big difference in quality between the mid-priced and higher priced butchers.

The one thing I don't get about SLM is how people seem to think that it's a cheap place to shop. Don't get me wrong - I think most vendors are generally decent value (i.e. pay more for better, fresher food), but it certainly isn't "cheap".

"Kitchen and bathrooms were not touched" and "they did most of the work themselves" ARE YOU KIDDING ME??

Where do you think most of the money is spent in a new restaurant?? An ecologizer alone can easily cost $100,000.

Once again, I would suggest starting with Opentable to see where you can get reservations, and then research the available restaurants.

I'm not sure if anyone else thought that they were kosher, but a quick check of the COR website shows that they aren't.

Not that it really matters, but it would be nice to have a kosher restaurant south of Eglinton.

Comments on restaurant selection for an Xmas/New Years trip to LA and Palm Springs

We're escaping Toronto for 9 nights over Christmas and New Years and have made reservations at the following restaurants. I would welcome any comments (and critiques!) as well as a suggestion for a LOW KEY restaurant for dinner on NYE in Palm Springs.

Due to my partner's physical limitations, we need to be able to make reservations and can't do places with bar seating or communal tables. Would have loved to try a Roy Choi place, but I couldn't find any that would work for us.

December 25 - Want easy and close by (staying in Westwood), so if Shamshiri Grill is open, that's where we're going. Otherwise, it will be The Backyard in our hotel (W L.A.).

December 26 - AOC. Having enjoyed Lucques a few times over the years, wanted to give this place a try.

December 27 - Pizzeria Mozza. Going here based mostly on the chopped salad (which is hard to find in Canada), though we have generally enjoyed the rest of the food as well.

December 28 - Manhattan Beach Post, based mostly on recommendations and a decent looking cocktail list.

December 29 - Bestia. Been reading too much about this place not to try it. And wanted to compare it for ourselves to Pizzeria Mozza.

December 30. Workshop Kitchen & Bar (PS). Once again, based on recommendations and a decent looking cocktail list (notice a theme?)

December 31 - suggestions, please for somewhere downtown Palm Springs. We thought of Matchbox, but didn't have a great meal there last time. Also looked at Trio, Spencers, and Tinto, but none of them would work (Trio is a set menu, Spencers didn't look interesting and Tinto would require a cab).

January 1. Birba (PS). Menu seemed interesting.

January 2 - back in LA and no plans yet.

Thanks for any feedback!
