Sunday night dinner in Pacific Heights

Having dinner with out of town guests wanted to stay in Pacific Heights. Want a great meal and neat atmosphere. Not too loud. Need some help please.

A monday night adventure before Christmas

Okay thanks...What would be really great is if I could pre check my bag the day before....I am so lucky to get to go somewhere, but traveling has lost a lot of its glamor. It is just kind of a pain in the rear. I guess we will give Brooklyn a try. Thanks for your help.

A monday night adventure before Christmas

We are spending the night near JFK on our way to London the Monday before Christmas. We arrive at JFK around 3 in the afternoon, and leave Tuesday morning around 8:30.

Would love some ideas on what to eat and see. Needless to say I don't want to spend a lot of time in the hotel room. I think we want a nice dinner...Wanted to eat around 8 or so...We love all kinds of food. Since we are from Texas we don't need Mexican or a steak house, and I think we will eat Indian while in London. We will be using cabs to get around. Ideas on neat neighborhoods to explore...bars, shops....Also if anyone has a suggestion on which place to stay near JFK I'm all ears.

Texas Chicken Fried Steak

Oddly enough the best I've had in a while is Charleston's, in Fort Worth. Charleston's is not too bad copy of Houston's. In fact they do a really good job on everything I've tried so far. Their CFS is great. It is cooked pefectly has a wonderful crust and the gravy has real flavor. It is not just warm white paste. If you are in the area give it a try, I'd say it's worth the calories.

Houston on Christmas Eve near Galleria.

Thanks for the help. Now it appears a larger group of us will be going for Tex-Mex on Wednesday night. Casual and early.

Thanks again to all and Merry Christmas.

Thanks for your help. We want something besides an ihop or hotel restaurant.

Dallas - Thin Crust Pizza

I stopped by California Pizza Kitchen today. You can get their thin crust with any pizza or toppings it was thin and crispy and good.

I know no one like a chain....but it hit the mark for me today

DFW visitor-advice for fellow CH?

Joe T's can be hit or miss. The last few times I've been there it had been great. At dinner you have few choices...original dinner or fajitas.

Lunch may be a better choice....

The original dinner is served family style if more then one orders

You get 2 nachos, two cheese enchildas, two tacos, rice, beans and guacamole.

I love their nachos a full round tortilla with melted longhorn cheese and chopped picked jalapenos. Their beans are just yummy. I'm sure full of lard.....but tasty

the tacos are not my favorite but the last few times they have been great.

The enchilads again are not my most fav but they are good...or can be

I took my sister in law over Christmas....her first Tex-Mex experience....she loved it. I told her not to wear her coat inside because you smell like mexian food after you eat there...Not really a bad thing but if you are visiting from out of town....you may want to keep your coat fresh

The margarita's at Joe T's are good. On a nice day, sitting outside, eating and drinking with friends and family can be a sublime at Joe T's

I would not eat there solo for my first time....Joe T's can be like a favorite pair of jeans..sort of comfort food.

Need slider sized rolls or buns for a party in dallas

I just had some on those rolls and they are good. I'll check with my local stores too. Good suggestions all. Thanks. There is also a bakery in Fort Worth. The Blue Bonnet Bakery and they make regular, small and what they call midget...those might work too

Best Tex-Mex in Dallas for out-of-towner

I think a lot of people would agree that you go to one place for enchiladas, another place for tacos...some times it is the margarita's.

Where ever you end up going...you should try a combo plate....if you do not know what you like.

When I think pure Tex-Mex I think of cheese enchiladas in what they used to call brown gravy...it should be a thin but meaty texas chili sauce. I think the enchiladas should have onions either inside or on top. These should also be some cheese melted on top. I prefer cheddar or sharp cheddar to american...but a lot of places use american...

good sour cream chicken enchiladas are great too with a bit of green sauce

A good beefy taco, a great moist tamale

refried beans and rice.

the chips and salsa on the table are also key.

I love El Fenix...it is pure, but I might try Mi Cocina too...I think they are a bit more modern and their ingredients are usually pretty fresh...Plus I love their salsa....and their spicy sunset sauce....but some locations are better then others.

There are soooo many good places and so little time.
I hope you hit the restaurant at a good time....when everything is up to snuff...
Good luck, have fun, let us know where you went and what you orderd!

like all comfort foods...Tex Mex is not to be overlooked or snubed.

I'm having a cocktail party and plan on serving bbq brisket...but I want the sammies small...where can I get good half dollar sized buns in Big D?

Absolute best burger in Texas?

There are several places in Dallas that I like. I usually order a jalapeno cheese burger. For me the test of a good burger is without mustard....I put mustard on flavorless meat. I will also use a little mayo on really dry meat. If the burger is juciy enough and the bun is toasted (with a slight smear of butter or mayo...to maintain bun integrety not to flavor) a good cheese burger needs no mustard or mayo.....I get enough vinegar flavor from the pickled japs and a few pickle slices...

that being said....

I like Chips, Adairs, The Loon and Club Schmitz in Dallas

I've been to Chris Madrid's pretty neat....kincaids...has been hit or miss, their burgers are a bit too lean....

There is a website by a guy in or outside of Houston....he tries to hit all the best places. His reviews are fun to read....I think it is the Hamburger Guy....something like that. Should not be hard to find if you google.

I do beleive a good cheese burger can be sublime...when you find one that's just right...they are hard to beat.

good luck in your quest.

Nice Jewish girls needs info on ham(LOL!)

I'm not a great ham lover but, it can be good. I have had luck making ham loaf with leftovers. You can find something in the joy of cooking. I made a glaze with mustard and apricot or a jezebel sauce...mustard, apricot, pinapple and horseradish. Pretty good really. Your left over ham is also good in eggs...when you make greens or beans instead of salt pork. It can help flavoring soups. There is always deviled ham. And then after many months there is always my favorite spot for leftovers...the trash can.
Happy New Year.

What to make with Duck Confit?

My friend had a rich meal and made a green salad made with Italian parsely, curly parsely and mint. The dressing was lemmon juice, evoo, salt and pepper. It was a nice contrast to the rich duck

Wild rice is nice with duck

I also love cauliflower

Black eyed pea cassoulet

I'm not really stressing. I'm just a little tired of eating and drinking. We have five couples coming out to our lake house for New Year's Eve and I may resort to some catering. Or when my guests ask, I'll really take them up on their offer to bring something.

Perhaps I'll save cassoulet for later date.

Black eyed pea cassoulet

My plan was to have something made ahead and flavorful. Orginally I planned on making cassoulet then I remembered that I needed to have some black eyed peas over the weekend too. Was trying to kill two birds with one stone. I do think I could prepare my meats...and then cook the bean/peas. It will make a tasty dish inspired by cassoulet.

Black eyed pea cassoulet

If I do use the black eyed peas I think you are right they will not hold up for all day cooking. And for that matter will not absorb that great flavor.

Black eyed pea cassoulet

I'm thinking about making cassoulet or rather a variation of for New Year's Eve. My concern is over cooking the black eyes peas. I was thinking of using fresh instead of dried or canned because they are available. I'm from the south and it is good luck to eat the peas....Anyway, I think if they are simmered and not boiled I might have some luck. Any ideas?

after theather dinner act 2

I'll be in NYC for thanksgiving. We are staying in the Upper East Side. Tuesday (nov 21) we are seeing Martin Short in Fame Becomes Me. The show starts at 7:00. Jacobs Theater 242 West 45th. Need ideas on where to eat after the show. Love all foods...good service, price not really a problem. Unique, local place. Relaxed. Like rustic french, Northern Italian, all asian, nice red wine list and a good scotch. We were thinking about getting a limo/driver to take us for the evening. We are a party of 2.
Thanks.
