Bludso's Texas Sampler - will it hold?

Baby Blues is not good BBQ and it's expensive for what you get.

Looking for suggestions...Santa Monica

I really like your list foodiemahoodie.

Visiting from NYC - what's the "best" of the things that aren't great here?

You could always do Gjelina for lunch, or maybe some of the other places you're deciding between. I don't know off the top of my head which of the others offer lunch.

What everyday dishes don't you make?

You can make a curried chicken salad, using plain yogurt. There are no eggs involved. I've also made a good tuna salad using a cilantro yogurt dip I buy at Trader Joe's. I don't add eggs to that tuna salad. Usually add celery, onions, sometimes corn or olives.

Friday night - need dinner suggestion - trying to please out of towners & locals with varying palates, etc. (Pasadena area)

Would your picky friend (burgers, pizza, ice cream) eat Thai or Korean?

Friday night - need dinner suggestion - trying to please out of towners & locals with varying palates, etc. (Pasadena area)

I live near Mohawk Bend and have been three times. I'd go back, but not for the food. I like the beer selection, but I've been disappointed with every single food-item I've ordered. Also, it can be pricey. I would find something else, if I were you.

How about the Congregation that just opened up in Pasadena a few months ago. I can't vouch for the food there, because I haven't had any. Maybe someone else can tell you how the food is.

Need ideas for rounding out menu with lamb shanks as main.

I like the sound of cauliflower gratin and green beans. Sounds amazing.

Real, Traditional Club Sandwich in LA?

Oh, hahaha. It did not look like it had all of that extra stuff on it. Nevermind. :)

Real, Traditional Club Sandwich in LA?

A friend ordered one at Bottega Louie when we went for lunch. It may have had avocado, but I can't remember.

"Cooking" with a toddler?

When I was young and learning to cook I loved anything that let me get a little messy and work with my hands. I still do like that, actually.

One of the first recipes I remember my mom teaching me was to make vegetable lasagna. This could work with stuffed shells or something, too. Use a cheese mixture (ricotta, mozzarella, parm) with a little added pepper and herbs that your toddler can mix together using his hands. Then I also had the easy job of layering the noodles, spinach, mushrooms, cheese, sauce.

Baking (bread, cookie dough, pizza dough) where you can use your hands to knead or form cookies would be another good idea.

I love the ideas above of salads and smoothies, learning to crack eggs and child-friendly knives.

Leftover Pulled pork

I was going to suggest enchiladas or tacos, similar to hotoynoodle's suggestion.

Do you refuse to go to a restaurant because of a bad review you read here on CH?

For me, a bad review here on Chowhound holds a lot of weight. Especially if a number of people chime in and agree with the OP's views. There are SOOOOOO many restaurants in LA and I don't eat out nearly enough to try them all.

While I do take them with a grain of salt, if I'm looking for a particular type of restaurant or in a particular part of town, I will pick a beloved or even mixed-reviewed place. I don't feel I should waste my time at places that many people agree aren't any good.

Also, I agree with others that certain Chowhounds opinions carry more weight. There are certain people who express views and tastes that align with mine very closely.

Post Screening Drinks -- Raleigh Studios

Which Raleigh Studios? And what time?

Red Lobster

The only thing good about Red Lobster is their biscuits. This should be on the Chains board. If you're looking for good fresh steamed lobsters in LA and are willing to consider options besides Red Lobster, maybe some posters here could help you.

As for fresh oysters, I have great ones all over LA. Which part of town are you in? Budget?

new to cooking

This is so great and thorough. Thanks Hank!

New Family with Kids - Help Me Devise Menus

What about casserole-type dishes? Enchiladas (you can make veggie or cheese). If they like frozen peas and corn, would they try something like a shepard's pie or chicken pot pie with those vegetables and maybe a few others?

Do they eat beans? A taco bar or fajita bar. I love the idea of getting them involved. Is it warm enough to start grilling where you are? Maybe grilled kebobs or roasted vegetables would help introduce them to more non-frozen items.

You mentioned that you'd make Thai food for yourself. What if you start them out with something like Pad Thai and include a curry and other items in the meal and eat that meal family-style. That would allow them to have tastes of the more adventurous options, but could stick mainly to Pad Thai and rice.

Also agree with home-made versions of what you already know they enjoy. You could do a creamy stove-top mac and cheese that is similar to the boxed variety, but with better ingredients.

What/how much to order at Park's?

I really liked the pancake with rock shrimp. We ordered that along with several meats and sides last time I went. The pancake was even good the next day, because we ordered way too much food. Most of the leftovers were good the following day. I believe we ordered the Galbi, too, but I can't recall what else.

Help with menu for casual dinner this weekend? Sorta Southern themed

I have been served pimento cheese in celery and thought that was a great appetizer. Tasty, but light.

Chinatown, Downtown, Silverlake

How large of a group and what is your budget?

Mashed Sweet Potatoes: Bake the Potatoes First?

I greatly prefer the flavor of mashed sweet potatoes when the potatoes have been baked. That's how I do it no matter what the recipe calls for.

Best substitute for Crystal hot sauce in this recipe?

I agree with Frank's, but I don't think Tabasco would work. The flavor is very different from Crystal.

Delivery in Silver Lake/ Echo Park area?

Just called Masa about weekend delivery. It's only Monday thru Friday lunch delivery. Bummer.

Delivery in Silver Lake/ Echo Park area?

I haven't tried Best Halal Tandoori yet. It looks like it's outside of my delivery area.

That's good to know about Masa. I haven't ever thought of ordering it delivered for lunch, but you're right it's enough food for more than one meal.

Delivery in Silver Lake/ Echo Park area?

Masa delivery is only during lunch, FYI. I've had the same question as you Teresachowchow. Thai and Pizza only where I am. Where are you ordering Indian food delivery?

What mistake do you always make when you're cooking in a rush?

I always for get to put the herbs and garnish at the end. At least when I'm just cooking for myself. I usually remember (not always) if I'm cooking for others.

Plastic containers

Have you checked with the container store? Maybe someone else will be able to point you in a better direction, but I believe I've seen containers for baked goods there.

What to do with cabbage

I got inspired when I was at the grocery store recently and purchased cabbage. I've never actually cooked with cabbage before, believe it or not. Any ideas for simple, but delicious ways to prepare?

I was thinking of chopping and sauteeing in a little olive oil with onions and spices. But really, I have no idea what to do. Any help would be appreciated.

Business Dinner - Pasadena - Suggestions please...

The Langham is a beautiful setting, great ambiance, but I couldn't tell you anything about the food at the Terrace. I've only been there for drinks and light apps. But I do think it's a good option, just for the setting alone.

The Best Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe

I tried the Smitten Kitchen recipe this week and they came out great. I am not much of a baker, and didn't have all of the tools i needed, but the cookies still came out great. They were better than any store-bought cookies I've tried. It was my first attempt at chocolate chip cookies from scratch.

Perfect texture and taste. Not too sweet. I sprinkled a bit of sea salt and loved that tip.

Thanks for sharing the link. :)
